two weeks pass...

The DJ Seinfeld DJ Kicks is a bigger deal than I was expecting, and led me to discover J. Albert who is awesome.

two months pass...

i've probably listened to Delroy Edwards' "RIO GRANDE" more than anything this year.. it's REALLY lofi, though

would be nice if he released the whole thing on disc

brimstead, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:16 (five years ago) link

sounds good, thanks for the tip!

I really enjoy how... rhythmically ecumenical this scene is? The way tracks will drift into electro or breakbeat inspired sections in this really unfussy manner reminds me of idk early nineties 808 state or something.

On this tip the Ross From Friends remix of Westerman’s “Edison” is really great, even if I guess you could box it as “Bicep with cred”.

AL-90 (mysterious Russian guy who's seemingly only popular on RYM) is great. I hear some strong Burial vibes in his work, this track especially:

For anyone else who had it in their Wantlist, the 2x12 of Ross From Friends’ Outsiders has finally been re-pressed.

sombrerodetuned (sombrerodetune), Saturday, 22 December 2018 10:35 (five years ago) link

I saw their mate DJ Boring play at a festival earlier this year and he really was just playing the most shameless early 90s handbag house and R&B remixes.

One thing that all PR has evidently been very keen not to mention is that Ross From Friends is apparently Andy Weatherall's son?

Matt DC, Saturday, 22 December 2018 12:37 (five years ago) link

haha what?

thread title still delivers the laughs

hello

the late great, Saturday, 22 December 2018 18:31 (five years ago) link

agree with lobster theremin and e-beamz as key labels.

more key labels:

-- 777 recordings

https://777recs.bandcamp.com/album/youtube-rips-777-03

somewhere between lo-fi and the berlin techno sound

-- lost palms (and to a lesser extent, parent label shall not fade)

triangulating lo-fi, breaks and more traditional US and french house sounds

https://shallnotfade.bandcamp.com/track/at-night

like you mean lo-fi remixes of handbag house and r+b tracks? or just straight-up handbag house and handbag house remixes of r+b?

One thing that all PR has evidently been very keen not to mention is that Ross From Friends is apparently Andy Weatherall's son?

hmm

the late great, Saturday, 22 December 2018 18:49 (five years ago) link

something striking about this scene is that a lot of it - especially the stuff that is the best/worst of it, in terms of being most shamelessly beholden to the style - isn't on any label, let alone available on vinyl

very much the blog house of the 10s

zone of fruitless intensification but with like ~vibes~ instead of drum programming

this kind of nailed it except that ZFI is a fake concept invented by music critics, should be called "zone of i've run out of novel things to say about this"

clearly the ethos of this music is that there's no such thing as too much nostalgic tape hiss

the late great, Saturday, 22 December 2018 19:03 (five years ago) link

the comments threads on this nørus video are great reading btw

like you mean lo-fi remixes of handbag house and r+b tracks? or just straight-up handbag house and handbag house remixes of r+b?

Straight up. In any case while I haven't delved especially deep into this stuff it doesn't feel especially lo-fi to me?

Matt DC, Saturday, 22 December 2018 19:46 (five years ago) link

that's interesting

not sure a deep dive is warranted - there really is an endless amount of mediocre lofi house business out there on youtube

this EELF channel for example has about 700 videos across the two playlists below, i spent a good half hour listening to snippets and literally none of the tracks (well, besides that nørus track i already posted) were memorable

still, some fun to be had scrolling through to see how bad the names get (dj sabrina the teenage dj?)

OK I'm fully prepared to believe that each and every one of those artists is more lo-fi than Ross From Friends/DJ Seinfeld/DJ Boring.

Matt DC, Saturday, 22 December 2018 20:05 (five years ago) link

so what's your objection to the lo-fi tag?

the late great, Saturday, 22 December 2018 20:14 (five years ago) link

Okay Matt’s comment about Ross From Friends being an heir to the Andrew Weatherall fortune got me really excited to start recommending The Haunted Dancehall to all my lofi-obsessed friends as supplemental material, but a cursory Google of the topic seems to reveal that all the websites where the connection comes up take pains to clarify that, while his dad is a figure with 90’s rave connections and the last name “Weatherall”, he’s not that specific Weatherall.
That said the other thing Matt brought up about DJ Boring playing straight-up unvarnished handbag in a DJ set still has me excited, it’s my personal opinion that we need more handbag in the world of 2018.

You're all losing so many points on your progress bars (Champiness), Saturday, 22 December 2018 21:44 (five years ago) link

ok fine mid-fi

brimstead, Saturday, 22 December 2018 22:49 (five years ago) link

so wait, is Andrew Weatherall his dad or not?

frame casual (dog latin), Saturday, 22 December 2018 23:53 (five years ago) link

I don't hear his stuff as lo-fi, that's an unfortunately off putting tag for an artist with an unfortunately off putting name who happens to make FANTASTIC music

frame casual (dog latin), Saturday, 22 December 2018 23:54 (five years ago) link

Yeah I feel like LIES or something is real lo fi dance

Ross seems to have hifi aspirations

Listen to baltra

Wait maybe he's not lofi

okay thas good

macropuente (map), Sunday, 23 December 2018 05:32 (five years ago) link

on the topic of being disapointed by non-lofiness of lofi house djs' sets, last summer my friend and i saw someone on lobster theremin (can't remember who) dj and they played tech house all night. well we left after an hour but i assume they'd continued

flopson, Sunday, 23 December 2018 05:39 (five years ago) link

tech house can be awesome tho

macropuente (map), Sunday, 23 December 2018 05:45 (five years ago) link

not sure if theyre lofi house but i really like the name DJ Fart in the Club

flopson, Sunday, 23 December 2018 05:48 (five years ago) link

Feel like things like bergsonist and moma ready are sorta lo fi, but not really ... chill? at all and so don’t get lumped in

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Sunday, 23 December 2018 05:58 (five years ago) link

LIES and the other labels that got called lo-fi splintered off into a bunch of different sounds embracing industrial, EBM, etc that are more varied and interesting than the youtube house that ended up inheriting the genre tag

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Sunday, 23 December 2018 06:27 (five years ago) link

How is it surprising that ppl who produce tracks that won't work in clubs... spin tracks that do work in clubs

brimstead, Sunday, 23 December 2018 19:09 (five years ago) link

did this already get discussed 10 years ago on the hipster house thread

brimstead, Sunday, 23 December 2018 19:13 (five years ago) link

I don’t even know what counts as lo-fi house tbqfhwy but I quite like this one
