No, he's terrible. But I can see where his schtick may appeal to some people.

Heidi Gardner should make waves. Millennial Girl may not be daringly original, but she kills it

Baldwin as Trump kinda shook me out of habitual viewing. I'll come back when it stops.

The weird 3 camera sitcom sketches Mooney and Beck Bennett do every once and a while are sogreat imo.
All of the political cold opens are terrible aside from a stray single joke every now and then. They brought Fallon back to do Kushner ffs (the joke being he has a “ Mickey Mouse voice”. To me that’s such a damning example of how poor and out of touch the instincts are: take an inherently comical situation and make it unfunny.

agreed, best first season in a long time. i think she's gonna be the show's all star in the next couple of years.
― challops trap house (Will M.), Monday, 9 July 2018 17:54 (five years ago) link
Most seasons only have about 2 really good episodes/capable hosts and then a handful of really good sketches scattered, but I still like to watch the show. I keep looking up Kyle Mooney thinking I am missing something. Nope. That whole awkward av club/amateur actor thing has no appeal to me.

I don't mind Kyle on SNL (he's pretty good imo), but yeah this movie was great, it really got passed over. One of the better movies about superfandom I've seen in a while.

Agreed about Heidi Garnder. I love this character:

I really like the "girlfriend from every boxing movie" character, but I hope they use that sparingly.
I also like Mooney a lot. The Inside SoCal sketches are hilariously accurate if you're familiar with a certain kind of SoCal bro
― Paul Reverse and the rediaRs (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 9 July 2018 20:04 (five years ago) link
Yeah, the girlfriend from every boxing movie was great. One time. It shouldn't be a recurring thing.

second those SoCal sketches. I never say the word carnitas anymore without preceding it with "bomb-ass"

I kinda like Kyle Mooney, but the contrast between those two sketches is pretty telling. Heidi Gardner nails the teenage highschool kid; Kyle Mooney can't even play a convincing Kyle Mooney.

See, I think Gardner as the teen movie reviewer is a lot like some of Mooney's stuff, in that it's a very carefully observed study of a recognizable type. E.g.:

― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 9 July 2018 23:31 (five years ago) link
yeah I remember liking a lot of the stuff from his youtube channel several years ago before he was on SNL. I think Gardner is better because her characters are more specific and she has more range.
And yeah, burning out great one/two sketch characters by making them come back every week is one of SNL's worst tendencies. Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer the first time was great, I couldn't believe they did the exact same thing the next week. "Meet Your Second Wife" was one of the best sketches they've done in years, and I'm glad they didn't bring it back.
― flappy bird, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 01:56 (five years ago) link
That's kind of a nuts first Mooney video there, the Oscars one - it is just one long unfunny joke for 4 minutes, and the co-stars look incredibly awkward. I don't think I've ever seen Kyle Mooney in a sketch where he wasn't "Loook attt meeeee!", but then I guess those are the ones that his fans like?
I agree that Inside Socal is great, but it's pretty much the opposite of that first video.
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 07:50 (five years ago) link
I think what I'm trying to say is that Gardner is just better at acting. Her physicality in that youtuber sketch, the way she fidgets with her hair and waves her hands when she becomes flustered. Mooney mostly just starts talking slowly halfway through his sketches. I still like him. His relationship with Leslie Jones has been one of the better running jokes of the last few years.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 08:11 (five years ago) link
That Bailey Gismert character: I've encountered a few adult women who acted/spoke the same exact way. Terrifying.

Those 3 Mooney videos are all terrible. Do I need to be high?
― Yerac, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 17:56 (five years ago) link
xpost I do kind of like his relationship with Leslie Jones.
i only know Mooney from AD, where he is funny because his name is a reference and he is just a random looking guy who could just as well be preparing your Taco Bell order and that alone is the entirety of the joke.
― Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:06 (five years ago) link
I like Mooney's bad comedian character, Bruce somebody. Beyond that, I can take or leave him. He doesn't stink up the joint, but I never, ever think, "Oh good, Mooney's in this sketch!"
Gardner is great, though Yerac is otm re: Girlfriend In Boxing Movie should not be recurring.
Really dug Chris Redd this season. Sometimes just his reaction shots -- e.g., as the FBI agent listening in on Michael Cohen and Trump -- crack me up.

Carey did you know Kali is a huge a fan of Kyle? For what that's worth.
He's nothing special in most skits that don't clearly involve his input, but I think his characters and skits and especially videos w/ Beck are great.

― Yerac, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 19:39 (five years ago) link
they're the most consistently strong part of the show imo. Jost is great, the Norm influence is clear & appreciated
― flappy bird, Wednesday, 11 July 2018 16:02 (five years ago) link
Jost was completely awful in his first season or two, but has since improved dramatically. And Che's unscripted asides are reliably funny.
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 16:14 (five years ago) link
it must be noted how poorly SNL acquitted itself last night at the emmys. che and jost were remarkably tepid, and lacked chemistry. the armisen/rudolph thing bombed (this is the first time I've ever thought maya was bad in anything!). (I wish armisen would just go away, how does he still get work?) the whole program was a bore.
― rip van wanko, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 14:55 (five years ago) link
Armisen, like Jimmy Fallon, strikes me as an unfunny person who tries really hard to be seen as funny.
― crüt, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 15:40 (five years ago) link
Imo Armisen is a sort of twisted straight man a la Will Ferrell. That is, his characters are huge and ridiculous, but what makes them funny (or "funny," depending) is that they are played straight and he doesn't break. The "humor" comes from watching people react and keep it together around them.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 15:49 (five years ago) link
Armisen's cannibal character on The Last Man on Earth was hilarious.
― DJI, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 15:53 (five years ago) link
I think he's pretty talented, I just don't know how he's avoided persona non grata amid all the weird rumors/accusations
― rip van wanko, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 15:57 (five years ago) link
I was just thinking about that. He had a wave of accusations and intimations that he didn't quite duck that came out a couple of years before the me-too thing started.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 15:59 (five years ago) link
I’m generally pro SNL and give it a lot is slack but the emmys bombed hard. 1 or 2 Adlibs from Che were ok. Mulaney thanking Steve Martin and Martin Steve was my favorite joke though.
