Hopefully I didn't miss anything. I've been working on this list for a while, I've even got good release date information for everything except "Jenny Ondioline", which came out either in August or December 1993 - online sources disagree. Anyone know for sure?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 9 July 2018 14:17 (five years ago) link

"Jenny Ondioline" - because its the only one I own

. (Michael B), Monday, 9 July 2018 14:21 (five years ago) link

Tough poll. This is a good one that didn't make it on here:

https://rateyourmusic.com/release/ep/stereolab/laminations/

The ones that had the biggest effect on me
Ping Pong - their first hifi release
Wow and Flutter - for Heavy Denim and Nihilist variations
The Laminations one I linked
Flourescences - fantastic standalone ep, one of their best tracks, gave the name for my tumblr blog.
Captain Easychord - absolutely incredible, Long Life Love pointed to great directions for Mary, that never got to he followed, and if course, Moodles!

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 9 July 2018 14:26 (five years ago) link

Right, "Laminations" is a promo EP.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 9 July 2018 14:31 (five years ago) link

Flourescences, which I feel like will run away with this poll. Would've voted for The First of the Microbe Hunters but I guess that's a mini-album. A lot of the songs on there are here on other singles, but none of them have "Outer Bongolia."

flappy bird, Monday, 9 July 2018 17:15 (five years ago) link

Went with Super-Electric EP because it is the best.

as it should

To dreammmmm the impossible poll...

Mark G, Monday, 9 July 2018 18:27 (five years ago) link

Man, I loved that Jenny Ondioline ten-inch with Fruition and Golden Ball and French Disko!

timellison, Monday, 9 July 2018 19:16 (five years ago) link

Another vote for Fluorescences here but the Captain Easychord EP is a close second (had it included the full version of the title track it would've been my pick).

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 9 July 2018 19:47 (five years ago) link

Going to take a bit to decide. Wish I still had some of these EPs; I check Ebay for vinyl copies now and again but they're never cheap. I never really liked how Oscillons jumbled the tracks from the Elektra-era ones. Fluorescences would seem like the default but "Brigitte," on Cybelle's Reverie, is sometimes my favorite Stereolab song. Love "Allures" as well.

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Monday, 9 July 2018 23:21 (five years ago) link

I never really liked how Oscillons jumbled the tracks from the Elektra-era ones.

Yeah, it works but I prefer the original context as well, so I just compiled all the tracks I listed above. Over 6 hours! Going to give it a listen straight through over the next day or two.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 9 July 2018 23:25 (five years ago) link

I went with the Flourescences EP.

Groove(box) Denied (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 00:20 (five years ago) link

Such a great song, and a shame it never ended up on a proper album. the Oscillons comp came out 9 years after the Fluorescences EP? it's such a great song, and I don't necessarily think it would've been a hit, but if it were on ETK I'm positive it'd be as well known as Cybele and Les-Yper. Though it wasn't part of those sessions right, it was recorded later in 1996?

flappy bird, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 01:49 (five years ago) link

they didn't even play it live very much, which is surprising

flappy bird, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 01:49 (five years ago) link

Went with John Cage Bubblegum/Eloge d'Eros 7"... missing is the 1993 split tour 7" with Unrest, which had one of their top five songs, Mountain

com rad erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 02:22 (five years ago) link

This is the Super 45 EP for me, I voted it #1 against all their other albums (& EPs/singles) in the album poll.

Poll is missing "Shimmies in Super 8" but hey.

Mark G, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 07:54 (five years ago) link

Lo-fi by a mile.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 09:06 (five years ago) link

missing is the 1993 split tour 7"

I skipped split singles as well, just going for pure 'lab.

Poll is missing "Shimmies in Super 8"

Same deal, otherwise the list of releases would've been ridiculous. A wonderfully prolific band they were!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 12:15 (five years ago) link

"Laissez-Faire" has been my favorite song lately so I voted LOW FI.

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 14:40 (five years ago) link

pretty much love about 80% of their output.

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 14:46 (five years ago) link

Jump drive shut out - solar throw away is missing from this poll. Do tour only eps count?

Ross, Wednesday, 11 July 2018 21:55 (five years ago) link

No, it's there. The tour singles are some of my favorite stuff.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 11 July 2018 22:52 (five years ago) link

So, how much of this stuff remains uncompiled?

(V) (°,,,,°) (V) (Austin), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 22:52 (five years ago) link

Uncompiled: Low Fi, The In Sound, The Underground is Coming, and everything after Captain Easychord. And ABC (The Multitude) was only on the Japanese edition of Aluminum Tunes.

J. Sam, Thursday, 12 July 2018 12:42 (five years ago) link

The In Sound tracks are all found on "Aluminum Tunes", just retitled. I guess they changed the names between releasing the EP and AT.

Blue Milk = Munich Madness
One Thousand Miles An Hour = 1000 Miles An Hour
Aluminum Tune = Golden Atoms

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 12 July 2018 13:22 (five years ago) link

Flourescences hasn't been compiled, has it?

(V) (°,,,,°) (V) (Austin), Thursday, 12 July 2018 15:30 (five years ago) link

It's on Oscillons

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 12 July 2018 15:31 (five years ago) link

Blue Milk = Munich Madness

whoa, I never knew there was another song called Blue Milk??

flappy bird, Thursday, 12 July 2018 16:15 (five years ago) link

I don't know why I've thought this whole time that Oscillons from the Anti-Sun was a best of set.

(V) (°,,,,°) (V) (Austin), Thursday, 12 July 2018 21:25 (five years ago) link

There's also "Blaue Milch" on this, but I think that's unrelated to the Cobra & Phases "Blue Milk" or "Munich Madness"?

with hidden noise, Friday, 13 July 2018 09:19 (five years ago) link

Right, completely different track.

I listened to everything in order - something I've never done before. I fell in love with the krautrock of "Jenny Ondioline" (which is too short no matter show long it is) and bailed around "Cobra" when the French pop overtook the German rock. At their best, Stereolab is combining a terrific groove with lots of odd and interesting sounds - "Soop Groove" is one of the high points of what I mean. I like the title track to "Captain Easychord" but the rest of the EP is sort of goopy to me, and "Instant 0" is about half good. The tour singles are generally good with "Solar Throw Away" being the high point. But, man, everything through "The Free Design" is just so great, almost nothing I wouldn't listen to on repeat.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 13 July 2018 13:30 (five years ago) link

This is like voting for your favourite child.

But OK, The Free Design wins as (a) Cobra era = peak Stereolab and (b) the quality is evenly high across all the songs, while covering a lot of ground stylistically.

Runners up: Super-Electric cos that's where I came in; and Rose because dual mono rules and it contains Laetitia's best lyrics.

Best individual track here = John Cage.

Fluorescences and Miss Modular EPs are unbeatable, prefer them to any Stereolab LP

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Monday, 30 July 2018 00:01 (five years ago) link

Great results, pretty much agree! My tag favorite of the 0 votes was "Ping Pong" which is really strong.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 30 July 2018 02:36 (five years ago) link

I voted Low Fi but these are mostly fantastic

sleeve, Monday, 30 July 2018 02:42 (five years ago) link

French Disko 7" 0

There is no other poll where this would happen.
