in a vacuum these sort of things might look overblown but in the context of the games industry since 2014 there's more to it

ciderpress, Friday, 6 July 2018 20:56 (five years ago) link

The whole gamergate thing had an element of wanting to consider gaming to be an artform but then refusing to allow it to be critiqued, and campaigning against anyone (or any woman) who dared to do that. Seems like their criticism of her is basically the same, except this time a woman is on the other side of the equation, so they've switched sides too. Maybe that's all that matters.

wait, i thought they were ardently anti-games-as-art (git yer politicking out of MY games) unless it was like the level of detail on gun stocks

“We can probably fire anyone on the GW2 dev team as long we make a big enough stink,” wrote GW2 subreddit member 5NightsAtUndert413 in a now-deleted post. “Nobody at Arenanet is safe from the hand of Reddit... The moment a dev steps out of line or try to talk back to a player, guess what, they’ll know we got their hands on their throat and we can squeeze any time we like.”

I feel comfortable assuming this ass hat represents the majority of GW2 players and that ArenaNet is totally OK with this

guessing these chuds have IRL never squeezed their hands around anything other than their own lonely cocks

jfc that reddit post is maybe the most embarrassing shit i’ve read on the internet

circa1916, Saturday, 7 July 2018 18:48 (five years ago) link

idgi people give creators shit whether they are female or not. framing it this specific way seems like a surefire way to bait the scum of the Earth into attacking you. i mean this is kind of bait:

"Allow me--a person who does not work with you--explain to you how you do your job."

i dont get why you would even use Twitter in a public way if you didn't want people you don't work with commenting on your job.

really need to figure out how to get that killfile working here

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Sunday, 8 July 2018 22:23 (five years ago) link

reading that thread, she was looking for a fight, it has nothing to do with her as a person and is entirely about game design, she responds with a condescending "thanks for trying to tell me what we do internally, my dude 9_9" and things go to shit as people fall all over each other trying to call out someone for politely contributing to a public conversation.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 8 July 2018 22:24 (five years ago) link

Oh indeed. You’re definitely on the right side of this one.

If you have a Twitter account with your government name and your employer's name in the your bio and you aggressively berate an innocent, inquisitive consumer by using demonstrably false accusations of sexism in a community where actual virulent sexism is a known problem, some form of redress by your employer is probably warranted.

wait, i thought they were ardently anti-games-as-art (git yer politicking out of MY games) unless it was like the level of detail on gun stocks

They are pro-Games As Art they just don't think art has anything to do with politics (= any worldview not their own) and also see art as an objective thing that can be quantified. Basically they want their AAA games to be accorded universal respect.

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 9 July 2018 09:35 (five years ago) link

xp idk, I don't think the guy she berated actually did anything wrong, but firing someone for being mildly pissy on twitter seems like such an overreaction that it's hard not to see it as capitulation to those toxic aspects of the community?

soref, Monday, 9 July 2018 09:42 (five years ago) link

WHERE THE FUCK PLANET ARE YOU PEOPLE FROM WHERE HAVING A BAD DAY AND BEING A LITTLE BIT RUDE TO A CUSTOMER GETS YOU AND YOUR FRIEND ACTUALLY FIRED

Jesus fucking christmas is there not a thread about, I dunno, police work that Adam & how’s life can hang out on

Men never do this without getting fired. Fact.

El Tomboto, Monday, 9 July 2018 10:32 (five years ago) link

I'm not saying she should have necessarily been fired. And definitely not the poor schlub who tried to stick up for her. But she should have expected something. I very rarely even mention my employer on social media and if I was speaking on their behalf, I sure as shit wouldn't use my account to harrangue an innocent person like that. Oh no, how could that go badly?

how's life, Monday, 9 July 2018 10:56 (five years ago) link

In rare agreement with El T here. Grousing yr customers is petty and childish but OTOH who gives a shit? Men get to play the grumpy card every fucking day. A good manager should be comfortable with their employee fucking up occasionally. Just say "hey don't do that so much" and leave it at that.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 9 July 2018 13:44 (five years ago) link

I don't think anyone here is arguing that her response was absolutely fine. It just seems weird to still be focusing on that when the retaliation from the community was so crazy.

jmm, Monday, 9 July 2018 13:50 (five years ago) link

the specifics of the industry they're in makes a bit of back and forth with online "customers" way more appropriate/less of a big deal too imo. it's not like she was, say, the head of state just blathering the most offensive shit that drifted thru her head at all and sundry

he's one of our pwn (Noodle Vague), Monday, 9 July 2018 13:52 (five years ago) link

That dude tweeter is not 'innocent', that is 100% mansplaining.

Frederik B, Monday, 9 July 2018 15:35 (five years ago) link

it really isn't unless your definition is so utterly wide that it includes any man who disagrees with a woman and voices that disagreement.

i think she was being a jerk and it wasn't called for, but i also don't think she deserved to be fired over it.

circa1916, Monday, 9 July 2018 15:47 (five years ago) link

It's not just disagreeing, it's disagreeing with her about how she should do her job. It's the lack of respect for her credentials and experience. And when it happens each and every day, you're bound to lose your head every now and then.

Frederik B, Monday, 9 July 2018 15:55 (five years ago) link

Also when the suggestion is “moar branching dialogue trees” it’s like, are you twelve?

El Tomboto, Monday, 9 July 2018 15:57 (five years ago) link

people LOVE branching dialogue, it’s so much fun saving before every NPC convo so you can min-max the options, yes, great, put more of that in the game

El Tomboto, Monday, 9 July 2018 15:58 (five years ago) link

Basically they want their AAA games to be accorded universal respect.

this is particularly sad because the voice acting and stories in AAA games are generally on the level of a pretty good high school production

Karl Malone, Monday, 9 July 2018 16:01 (five years ago) link

the idea that he shouldn't express disagreement with her about game design because she's a professional game designer and he's just some guy who plays games seems silly to me - of course laypeople can have opinions about computer games, it's not like they're talking about string theory or something

he was disagreeing on a design point. like you should be able to critique creative decisions even if you are not a designer/filmmaker/musician/whatever, we do it all the time. and with stuff like game development, as shitty as some of it is, processing community feedback is part of the gig. i just don't get any whiff of condescension there, guy (regardless of quality of his take) seemed to just want to have a discussion.

circa1916, Monday, 9 July 2018 16:52 (five years ago) link

I have no idea why a woman in the gaming industry would be so defensive.

lol @ all the men in this thread not getting why a female in a male dominated industry might just lose her shit a little once in a while because this stuff only happens EVERY DAY.

Good thread

So, because it seems a lot of people are having trouble with it, I'm going to talk about Jessica Price and ArenaNet.

This 👏 is 👏 sexism. This is what it looks like. If you look at this situation and join the mob of people sympathizing with that "poor, innocent man", it is my firm belief that you are, excuse the saying, part of the fucking problem.

https://www.polygon.com/2018/7/13/17566068/banned-twitch-streamers-youtube-slurs-language

...others argued that terms like “gay” and “fag” evolved online. People claim that because the terms are used so often online, and supposedly without any malice, then our own understanding of how these words should be able to change. This argues kids who grow up on the internet, and see words like “gay” and “fag” slung around as casual supplements for words like stupid, frustrating, or annoying, wouldn’t think twice about using a slur because it’s not how the word was introduced into their vocabulary.

I wonder if these fucking idiots ever wonder about why society at large sees fit to ostracize them, besides the fact that we’re all normie chads or whatever
