Holy tldr Moka

Found it weird that the movie the king is about whether Elvis is still relevant and asking various people of influence if he is. I mean cmon? Elvis will never not be dope

Ross, Wednesday, 4 July 2018 14:12 (five years ago) link

i'll be submitting a ballot.

There’s a comp out there called Elvis 75- Good Rockin’ Tonight that is pretty much a superset of my ballot so far.

Uncle Redd in the Zingtime (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 21:23 (five years ago) link

I'll be sending mine tomorrow!

Euler I'll be gone from this Saturday until July 19... I think you should accept ballots a little longer (at least until we have 20) to make time so I can help you with the images and the rollout! If you're busy just send me what you have so far and I'll receive the ballots and sum them. I suppose I can start the rollout on July 22 or 23.

If you can't just forward ballots or ask a mod to change mail to motelmoka at gmail

He also wrote some dreck for the Elvis movies but man, that half dozen there

ok I would be happy to delay until July 19! I too am on the road now and won't get home until about the same day.

I definitely want to vote (I think I'm one of the biggest Elvis fans on ILX) but doubt I'll get my 50 songs in an order I can live with by tomorrow. It's a bad time right now.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 21:57 (five years ago) link

good, then let's wait until Moka's back after mid July

Poll shook up.

Dan Worsley, Thursday, 5 July 2018 06:40 (five years ago) link

Euler, Moka et al
Thanks for the welcome hiatus. I just put the second CD from 'The Searcher' soundtrack to try and prompt me to a ballot when I saw the latest posts. I was wondering how on earth i could rank 50 tracks and had settled on my favourite ranked no.1 (not telling yet) and then the rest unranked because, well, I've been listening to Elvis for over 40 years now and I can only think of one absolute stinker ('Confidence") that I would actively turn off. Living with the music for so long has meant going through ebbs and flows between the decades and genres. I was a fool for the early Sun and 50s RCA stuff as a kid and I still think there's not a harder '50s song than 'Hound Dog' hands down, but the post Army era brought out some beautiful studio work (musicians and technology). There are nuggets of gold all through the 60s prior to the American Studios 'return to form'. The NBC TV special black leather sets are still killer (The Searcher uses these as the fulcrum of the documentary). Then the 70s - long ago dismissed as trash, but as this thread has shown, there are some incredible performances. The 70s was where - I believe - Elvis took off the mask. Yes, some of the songs might have been easy, or less than rock 'n' roll, or songs that the Colonel wanted him to include on the album because of the publishing rights, but the songs prior to the 70s were never so personal (except for the 2 demos he did at Sun for his mother). The obvious autobiographical - Always on my mind / Separate ways - are well known but the two I linked to up thread - Pieces of my life / It's midnight - I don't think will get any love outside dedicated Elivis fandom, but in those two he opened his heart just a little bit wider. And the sad thing about 70s Elvis is that those gems and others such as 'there's a honky tonk angel'/ good time charlie's got the blues, 'elvis country', all the jungle room stuff, they are all overlooked in favour of the elvis-burger-vegas pantomime. And yet the two best Elvis films - that's the way it is and elvis on tour - are 70s and proud, and i'm rambling now, so i'll wind it up quickly and probably be the first person to have compared elvis to a stick of blackpool rock: wherever you break it along the linear line of his career you will always find something that (to me anyway) PROVES his gift of musicality (some born?, most learned, but all respected). I seriously don't know how to rank a top 3 of the sun recordings, let alone compare 'baby let's play house' with the effortless beauty of 'she's not you' or the hard tack of 'stranger in my own home town'. i thin i've just convinced myself that it's number 1 ranked and the other 49 unranked and let them sit where they sit with other people's ballots. so thanks euler for delaying this and thanks moka for being the catalyst. I can't wait for the roll out.

PS Euler, awesome photo pick for the start of thread. Can I suggest something like this once the rollout has left the building?

With Cooke, while his early career was as a gospel singer, I don't think he ever recorded gospel again after "Lovable."

the arrangement on ' mess of blues' is so good. loose and tight in equal measure. and beautiful tonal balance to the recording.

one absolute stinker ('Confidence)

Yes that is definitely the worst Elvis song I've heard. It makes Do The Clam sound like Mystery Train.

just want to namedrop Orion in here. while thrift shopping i came upon this book

https://www.picclickimg.com/d/l400/pict/222985478851_/Elvis-Presley-The-Most-Incredible-Elvis-Story.jpg

i believe it was self published by the author, or that she had some kind of regional deal, but author Gail (G.B. Giorgio, from Marietta GA i believe) had her first book pulled from distribution or something so the first third of the book is a conspiracy theory about publishers trying to silence her.

she puts forth the theory that Elvis faked his death and presents a lot of evidence in this book. the birth certificate and tombstone misspelling of Aaron (his twin brother's first name, he died young, but cast a mysterious shadow over the Presleys) and she talks about the Geraldo 20/20 episode and finally there is the public display, when they showed Elvis's corpse for a public memorial, his nose looks entirely different, his face is described as if he were a poorly made wax dummy.

not that i believe any of it, but it's all incredibly interesting lore. i think she wrote many books on the subject. the last chapter even features the transcription of a rare encounter with The King post-"death" in a Hawaii airport!

one of her theories included the singer Orion. i don't know much about Orion but this is very fascinating because she claimed he was Elvis in disguise, and if you look at Orion's first album, it has a coffin and is called "Reborn". he's actually pretty talented - he sounds like a really good Elvis impersonator.

in truth, Orion was singer Jimmy Ellis. that doesn't stop people from jumping to conclusions. from another youtube video:

Barb Delawder
@Tiffany16ization jimmy was not Elvis...jimmy was shot and killed on dec. 12, 1998 along with his ex- wife whien a robber came into his pawn shop in Alabama. there r rumors that jimmy may have been EP's half brother but there is no real proof. but they were 2 different men. jimmy just happened to sound like EP. Jimmy was born in Mississipi but his real mother took him to Alabama to an adoption agengcy where he was adopted at a very young age by the Ellis's.

If I manage to get it together to send in a ballot, it might just consist of the last fifty Elvis songs I have listened to at that point in time.

Isora Clubland (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 19 July 2018 03:02 (five years ago) link

Probably drafting a ballot tonight.

Making Plans For Sturgill (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 20 July 2018 21:35 (five years ago) link

Drafting ballot right now, just found via Wiki that all of these songs were recorded on 7 June 1970, released on Elvis Country. There were some really fertile sessions once he was reinvigorated after the 1968 special and before the Colonel's live touring treadmill kicked in:

Tomorrow never comes
Funny how time slips away
I really don't want to know
Faded love
I washed my hands in muddy waters
Make the world go away

lefal junglist platton (wtev), Saturday, 21 July 2018 22:35 (five years ago) link

Voted!

A lot of my stuff ended up being later-period and like, half of From Elvis In Memphis, and a lot of known singles.
I should have dug in to his catalog more but I feel like I just needed to vote with my heart.

THIS way to fun times:
