I think he's funny, awkward and funny.

I don't really understand what the "cost" involved would be? To our finely-honed and pseudo-moral sense of football aesthetics?

for:

- hes big and gangly and gives full commitment, what else is he gonna do?
- mentality unquestionable, managers always gonna love a guy that does as asked when asked
- back in the days when it arose he was a decent ball mover and finisher, chest control is excellent
- contra NV above, a far better target man than many who made a living full time in that position (crouch, heskey, etc)

against:

- far too prone to violence
- constantly gets away with same
- proxy for manager/team failings
- does tbf seem like a cunt

Come on, no-one's mentioned his hair yet? Seriously?

Duddest of duds.

I just find him so hateful to watch, similar to the irrational(?) dislike I have for Harry Kane's game but a lot easier to justify.

Always looks like his elbows are so sharp and his momentum so brutal and ponderous that whatever he does in the vicinity of the ball succeeds by dint of other players instinctively wanting no part of him.

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 3 July 2018 09:39 (five years ago) link

if mma had been the draw in 97 that it is now he'd have been lost to the game surely

yes btw irrational kane game hate

Wait I thought everybody had seen thru mma and stopped watching it again. Except for bouncers and sports science bros obv.

too late for alt timeline marouaine

he's one of these players that has so mastered his evil game that I can only respect him, and he is v entertaining in a cat amongst the pigeons way. obviously I would never want him near a team I liked, but I love him at man u.

ogmor, Tuesday, 3 July 2018 10:50 (five years ago) link

As a last-ditch battering ram = classic, obviously
As a midfielder = virtually worthless
Having to resort to a last-ditch battering ram because you've left a superior midfielder on the bench and as a result your main creative outlet is playing way too deep = dud

Feel like the solution should have been to play Dembele, allowing KDB to play further up the pitch, but what do I know.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 3 July 2018 11:26 (five years ago) link

More than Martinez apparently.

I really like Fellaini - not many players are so disliked by fans and loved by managers. And that chest control, ooft!

What surprises me most is he hasn't really adapted to his large frame when it comes to interactions with other players - like he should know he's going to get penalised for so much of the stuff he does but he does it anyway. I do bloody hate watching him after his first (inevitably stupid) yellow.

Minister of the Pillow (fionnland), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 11:43 (five years ago) link

not a big fan but i do feel for the amount of grief that he has to put up with from, the stick he gets both on the pitch and on social media is incredible. i saw him get sent on ten minutes from time in a pre-season friendly against valencia back in the lvg era - ironic cheers when he was announced, ironic cheers every time he touched the ball, it was really uncomfortable to listen to. and then he goes and scores the winner with about two minutes to go.

does make me laugh that his salary is twice as much as rashford's and lingard's combined

I'd Rather Kecak (NickB), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 11:56 (five years ago) link

Classic. He is no more than a last-ditch battering ram, but he's very good at that, has a great header and indeed chest control. I've a weak spot for players who are not good at most things, but mastered one or two specific elements of the game.

I wouldn't say he's "prone to violence", though maybe he is. He's really clumsy and doesn't seem too much in control of his own body. That can lead to violence, but I like to believe most of it is unintentional.

YES. Dembele should start instead of Witsel, who's been having an absolute shocker of a tournament so far.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 11:59 (five years ago) link

Witsel & Carrasco wasting their talent by playing in China. I could understand it if they were over the hill

It's those two that have been really poor so far.

Witsel and his shot making decisions last night were horrible.

pleased to hear all-round good egg Richie Sadlier voting classic on this extremely pressing issue

Windsor Davies, Tuesday, 3 July 2018 13:30 (five years ago) link

one night I was out with friends and they were showing some soccer game on the TV and of course Fellaini immediately stood out b/c of his hair and goofy name. for whatever reason after a few beers we started doing the Fellaini voice which was just like every character on Mario Kart, "PASS IT TO FELLAINI!!! ITS FELLAINI TIME!!". bummed to find out he wasn't actually Italian. anyway, classic

frogbs, Tuesday, 3 July 2018 13:39 (five years ago) link

Saw what you want about Fellaini but if you tell me you didn't immediately know with 100% certainty he was going to score a header the second you saw him getting ready to come on last night, you're lying

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 18:03 (five years ago) link

We all pointed to our TVs didn't we, and said ah, Fellaini's coming on, he'll have sown panic in the Japanese defence with a headed goal in a matter of minutes, we just did, that's what happened

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 18:04 (five years ago) link

classic

ogmor, Friday, 6 July 2018 21:13 (five years ago) link

somewhere in between. he's not good enough to be playing at a top top club like united aspire to be but a very useful player for the evertons of this world. good option off the bench
