Which is part of the sound of the voice. Good lad.

Accent.

What is it about it?

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Monday, 2 July 2018 21:43 (five years ago) link

Anyway, I'm about to have another listen of this, prompted by the fact that I can't get 'Falling Into Me' out of my head.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 2 July 2018 21:45 (five years ago) link

I'm interested because it's such a specific thing to single out as "fucking annoying".

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Monday, 2 July 2018 21:46 (five years ago) link

I don't think it's necessary to go into specifics. It's really as simple as not finding a sound pleasant to listen to.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 2 July 2018 21:55 (five years ago) link

But that's okay, Billy Corgan's voice is unpleasant but it doesn't prevent me from listening to The Smashing Pumpkins.

love that the Quietus feature is called "Let's Eat Grandma's Favorite Albums"

the subtext here is people almost never care about "fucking annoying" voices unless they're women's voices

Katherine, no it isn't and please stop looking for ways of reading that into every post you can. Your intentions are good, and I share your views on gender equality, but you approach the subject in a way that is utterly tiresome and harms what you're setting out to achieve.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 13 July 2018 17:00 (five years ago) link

Just as an aside, I'm delighted that my political views were set in stone long before I joined ILX. If were some kind of young floater trying to figure out on which part of the political spectrum I sat, then this place would make leaning to the left politically and social justice look so unappealing just simply by association.

I really I wish I knew the right words to use to get my points across without everyone yelling at me

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 13 July 2018 18:21 (five years ago) link

you can't get through two sentences without being a condescending dick or making insultingly reductive generalizations about everyone who posts here

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 13 July 2018 18:27 (five years ago) link

As I've said, my political leanings are to the left and I'm very proud of that, but the truth of the matter is that if you really want to counteract a general drift into right-wing thinking and promote social justice, then you have to make it appealing to those finding their feet politically and those that are able to be swayed. ILX seems to me to be quite lousy at this.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 13 July 2018 18:43 (five years ago) link

Anyway, this album has become one of my favourites this year.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 13 July 2018 18:44 (five years ago) link

The average age of ILX posters is like 35 at this stage. The idea that this place represents some kind of front against impressionable kids drifting towards the alt-right is self-evidently ludicrous.

Matt DC, Friday, 13 July 2018 18:47 (five years ago) link

i had great parents. exposed to every culture in the world. friends who were straight, gay, bi, trans, and questioning. a loving support system. a great career in a liberal city.

then i joined ILX.

omar little, Friday, 13 July 2018 18:53 (five years ago) link

I'm not trying to counteract anything, I just wish women's voices weren't described as "annoying" so disproportionately

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 13 July 2018 18:58 (five years ago) link

The average age of ILX posters may very well be 35 at this stage, but given that anyone can land upon this place with the right Google searches and read these boards, that's a moot point. There is also no age limit on having your mind changed - and also, yes, there are a lot of people here that are very passionate about their left leaning views and would love to see the world in general steered in that direction.

(xx-post)

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 13 July 2018 19:02 (five years ago) link

I'm sorry that wanting women's voices to not be perceived as annoying emboldens the fascists or whatever

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 13 July 2018 19:05 (five years ago) link

Katherine - there was nothing wrong with the way you made that point. Turrican's just annoyed he was on the receiving end of it and is now unconvincingly trying to elevate basic butthurtedness into some form of higher moral position.

Matt DC, Friday, 13 July 2018 19:10 (five years ago) link

Katherine, I don't see why this needs to be pointed out, but her accent being described as "fucking annoying" has absolutely less than zero to do with her gender!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 13 July 2018 19:12 (five years ago) link

"you've completely misinterpreted my politics, incidentally i wonder if the political discourse here wouldn't alienate some potential young leftist toward the alt-right, given what just happened to meeeeeeee" - a remarkable sequence of thoughts

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 13 July 2018 19:13 (five years ago) link

my point was less about any specific instance and more about the pattern of women's voices being the ones to be described as "annoying" enough to keep people from listening to their music, where comparatively difficult men's voices -- many of which I like -- are less frequently seen as this much of an issue

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 13 July 2018 19:14 (five years ago) link

I just tried searching "Jamie T" "annoying accent" and the first and only result was about Kate Nash

Iain Mew (if), Friday, 13 July 2018 19:17 (five years ago) link

Yes, sounds like it.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Friday, 13 July 2018 19:18 (five years ago) link

Katherine - okay, that's fair enough, but you've got me curious now and I'd really like some examples.

take your pick of a million indie yelpers tbh

Simon H., Friday, 13 July 2018 19:35 (five years ago) link

the link mentions Tom Waits and Neil Young, I think also Bob Dylan; add to that the lead vocalists of 75% of indie rock bands

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 13 July 2018 19:35 (five years ago) link

How many have annoying accents though?

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Friday, 13 July 2018 19:36 (five years ago) link

Is a British person finding another British person's accent annoying a particularly British thing?

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Friday, 13 July 2018 19:40 (five years ago) link

Heh, I can't stand either Waits, Young or Dylan. Waits in particular has a voice which irritates me no end. I tend to enjoy covers of Dylan songs more thsn the original versions. Nevertheless, they do remain popular with the Steve Hoffman lot, a bunch of people so unheathily invested in The Beatles that they're still flinging sexist and racist shit in the direction of Yoko Ono, so I get what you mean.

There are some British accents that I find easier on the ear than others, yes.

I don't think that's a peculiarly British trait!

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Friday, 13 July 2018 19:48 (five years ago) link

I'll confess to Bjork and Kate Bush being acquired tastes as vocalists, but that had nothing to do with their gender, more that I just had to get used to their approaches - particularly Bjork's. I went through the same thing with The Cure, The Smashing Pumpkins and The Associates.

Christina Aguilera's voice annoys me, but I don't like that showboaty, zillion-notes-per-syllable, rammed-with-melisma vocal style no matter who does it.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 13 July 2018 19:51 (five years ago) link

glad we settled this

Simon H., Friday, 13 July 2018 19:52 (five years ago) link

Anyway, did I mention that this is one of my favourite albums to come out so far this year? It's grown on me a fuckton.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 13 July 2018 20:03 (five years ago) link

I personally find myself more drawn to women's voices than men's voices, especially in indie/rock type music, but I couldn't bring myself to try properly with this album yet because I remember thinking the vocals were awful on whatever I heard from them on the first album. Women are disproportionately deemed "annoying" in terms of performance in so many ways and with so much creativity that men don't seem to suffer.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 14 July 2018 14:13 (five years ago) link

I do feel like there's been a lot of 'the singer is so annoying' directed at male vocalists over the years on ILM, but that might be skewed because maybe 70% of that has come from the Lex.

Matt DC, Saturday, 14 July 2018 14:53 (five years ago) link

Speaking just for myself — there are bands I can’t listen to due to the male singer’s voice (and it seems to happen more & more... just happened this week; I had to turn off something I was listening to). Can’t recall any instances of this w/female vox.
