I guess I don't mind that the characters are flawed (awful) except when they continue to do things that are so stupid it's stretching any credibility
this embodies so much of why I lost interest in this show. It's not nearly as plausible when they keep making the same mistakes for the 9th, 10th, 11th times

Like Nurse Jackie, it felt realistic that they kept making the same mistakes, but I was still less and less compelled to watch them making them.

no you're right, i watched all of girls but peaced out on nurse jackie a coupla seasons before the end

so I've been idly re-watching some of these and this really jumped out at me:https://youtu.be/3kniMAzPRAk?t=179
Natalia's prediction = the end of the show
Hannah's dad being gay is also foreshadowed in Ezra's very first scene, where he directly states that Hannah should have known that Ezra was gay in college *because of her dad*
― Οὖτις, Monday, 19 November 2018 16:35 (five years ago) link
some of this show's whiplash plot contrivances made me predisposed to not think they were capable of that kind of foreshadowing/foresight but idk now
― Οὖτις, Monday, 19 November 2018 16:49 (five years ago) link
I feel like I remember it being pretty strongly implied that he was gay early on in the show? Isn't there also something about going on "trips" with men?
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Monday, 19 November 2018 16:51 (five years ago) link
sorry when I said Ezra I meant Elijah, so that reference is all the way back in the third episode, before her parents have had v much revealed about them (besides the fact that they've threatened to cut off economic support of Hannah)
― Οὖτις, Monday, 19 November 2018 16:55 (five years ago) link
yeah, I think I also remember catching that reference though
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Monday, 19 November 2018 16:58 (five years ago) link
p sure I missed it the first time around
just made me think of how that particular reveal didn't come out of the blue unlike, say, Hannah's OCD in season 3
― Οὖτις, Monday, 19 November 2018 20:04 (five years ago) link
anyway, the Natalia thing was more striking, because that breastfeeding comment is so specific

man the laughs really do start to evaporate in season 3
altho Desi's "confused Clapton" face is a welcome insufferably ridiculous addition

apparently, per the article (among other evidence), this is exactly how lena dunham has lived her life and her family deals with it through begrudging acceptance

negative reviews of Camping, the HBO show she co-wrote with her Girls partner, Jenni Konner,
I had no idea this was her show. also it was terrible, couldn't make it through the first episode

There's a lot going on in that profile.
― Yerac, Monday, 26 November 2018 20:33 (five years ago) link
it's one of the few profiles I've read where it's clear that the writer/interviewer found the entire endeavor tiring
not to mention: Race is a chronic blind spot for her because she didn’t grow up with a lot of diversity in her New York City private school, she explains.

what's the opposite of a thoughtful person
In general she's terrible, Tiny Furniture was fine, the start of Girls was good (got bored of it and her after 3 -4 seasons? and it had a hand in making greenpoint and williamsburg unliveable) but I appreciate her narcissism and prolificness that doesn't care whether people like or hate it. I am trying to think of another woman that produced so much work that young that is this terrible.
― Yerac, Monday, 26 November 2018 20:48 (five years ago) link
I support lena dunham. Being rich and eccentric isn’t the worst thing on earth.
― Trϵϵship, Monday, 26 November 2018 20:49 (five years ago) link
She’s definitely said regrettable things but she’s apologized, I think. I don’t get the hatred except for the fact that she’s an easy target.
― Trϵϵship, Monday, 26 November 2018 20:50 (five years ago) link
I do give her some credit for trying to get the Clinton campaign to distance itself from Weinstein. Not reading that profile though lol
― resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 26 November 2018 20:52 (five years ago) link
She's an easy target because she's insufferable and successful like how usually only men are that insufferable and successful. That's the part I admire. The annoying thing is when people use her as the face of: feminism, millennials, new yorkers, hipsters, brooklyn, etc.
― Yerac, Monday, 26 November 2018 20:56 (five years ago) link
She’s definitely a little insufferable but also somewhat talented and charming. Obviously unsuited to be the “face of feminism” but she didn’t ask for that and it mostly seems like conservatives who want to tag her as that. As a face of millennial brooklynites.... idk it kind of fits.
― Trϵϵship, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:00 (five years ago) link
idk y'all every other quote in this profile feels like an embarrassing gaffe in itself
― princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 26 November 2018 21:04 (five years ago) link
like i deeply agree she's too easy of a target but she... keeps... doing... it
personally i also have no interest in women who are finally as shitty as men

equity!
― Yerac, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:05 (five years ago) link
Also it seems weird to be super harsh on her when part of her deal is being very upfront about her flaws and limitations. So much of how people exist today has to do with seeming irreproachable and perfect—she is kind of refreshing because she’s so much the opposite of that.
― Trϵϵship, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link
I don't think she can ever apologize away her public statement defending her friend that was accused of sexually assaulting an actress that was a minor at the time.
― Yerac, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:08 (five years ago) link
she's upfront about what she thinks are her flaws and limitations. the apologies are a result of her constantly running up against new (to her, i guess, old to the rest of us) limitations

this is pretty much her tagline! it's her version of "people hate me because I'm beautiful"
― mh, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:10 (five years ago) link
the other line from the profile that really stood out:
She sent a screenshot of a motivational text conversation she’d had with her friend Lady Gaga, who is saved in her contacts as Lady Gaga, not as Stefani.
every time the word "friend" pops up after that, the whole concept is just kind of hanging there

I watched this movie on netflix this weekend that I am learning was called "Literally, Right Before Aaron" because on my netflix it was called "The Wedding Guest" or something. It feels so strange that they are still making these types of movies where the main character is highly unlikeable, neurotic, self absorbed and self sabotages everything. Is this a genre? (bringing it up because it's Dunham's genre).
