though it largely just makes me wish that look mexico would make another album tbh

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Saturday, 30 June 2018 12:20 (five years ago) link

despite really liking the band I've never been able to shake the view that they basically come off like a bunch of dads who bought cool equipment with money from their day jobs and somehow made v good grownup dad-indie rock

is this supposed to be ... bad?

alpine static, Saturday, 30 June 2018 15:48 (five years ago) link

Lol no just an observation

I want to change my display name (dan m), Saturday, 30 June 2018 17:03 (five years ago) link

this foxing song sounds nothing like brand new to me, but it's pretty solid

Speaking of Weakerthans, did anyone hear the solo record from John? I think the weakerthans disbanded awhile back

Jang Mo Jib (Ross), Saturday, 30 June 2018 22:38 (five years ago) link

winter wheat? it's great

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Saturday, 30 June 2018 22:38 (five years ago) link

Winter Wheat is wonderful. Samson is a terrific lyricist.

Digging that Charmer record. Good looking out. Really does scratch a very specific itch.

john's put out TWO solo records guys!

sean gramophone, Wednesday, 4 July 2018 14:23 (five years ago) link

the first one is less good than winter wheat iirc

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 14:42 (five years ago) link

maaaybe less emo than before (hence why I bumped the indiepop thread initially) but the new Trust Fund is so good https://trustfund.bandcamp.com

imago, Thursday, 5 July 2018 11:02 (five years ago) link

the new Mom Jeans throws in just enough fun surprises (guitar heroics, horns, multipart songs) to distinguish itself

Simon H., Friday, 6 July 2018 12:33 (five years ago) link

The first John K Samson album has The Last And, a Virtute-level hearttugger, inspired by The Simpsons' Krabappel/Skinner romance. Stylus has an article about some of that album's song origins. A favorite lyricist, love his small details and viewpoints.

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 9 July 2018 20:18 (five years ago) link

still can't get past the Thrice guy's Grohly vox tbh

Simon H., Monday, 9 July 2018 21:58 (five years ago) link

some cool riffs tho

Simon H., Monday, 9 July 2018 21:58 (five years ago) link

his vocals don't read as grohly to me but i sorta get what you mean anyway

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 9 July 2018 22:18 (five years ago) link

I lost track of Thrice once they took their proggy turn. I should revisit some of that stuff. I feel more open to that kind of thing than I was when it came out initially.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 14:34 (five years ago) link

does that mean you haven't heard vheissu or beggars? bc those are their best. (beggars is kind of a "have our cake and eat it too" recession from prog while the songs get deeper and darker still)

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 14:44 (five years ago) link

my fav thrice song

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 20:24 (five years ago) link

recommended if you miss the starting line a lot

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 20:28 (five years ago) link

made that joke without realizing the starting line reunited

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 20:30 (five years ago) link

I listened to vheissu and didn't like it at the time but could probably revisit. I was a really big The Artist and The Ambulance guy. A listened to the one after Vheissu and small bits and pieces after that. You very rarely steer me wrong Brad, so I'll give em all another chance.

Do we include things like the new Ostraca record in this thread. Emoviolence is still emo, right? And this is probably their most trad emo so far maybe.

i should start a joyce manor thread

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 18 July 2018 16:05 (five years ago) link

you should, or an album poll?

devvvine, Wednesday, 18 July 2018 16:09 (five years ago) link

oh lol i didn't see that until after i made it

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 18 July 2018 16:11 (five years ago) link

vox on the Joyce Manor single are a little sleepy but otherwise sounds great. "You're an asshole from a bar on a break in a break room, and you've never happy..."

Simon H., Wednesday, 18 July 2018 16:43 (five years ago) link

the second Foxing single is fucking great, hearing all five versions in a row was a delight

Simon H., Wednesday, 18 July 2018 18:41 (five years ago) link

i'm putting out an album the same month as joyce manor and it's extremely weird for me bc they're one of the reasons i'm in a band at all

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 18 July 2018 18:46 (five years ago) link
