Based on what little information has survived about the Brock story, it resembles the Aziz Ansari story from a few months ago, but taken further.

The onus was on Oberst, wasn't it? And it was totally debunked, iirc, and also fucked him up for a couple of years, and forever ties him to the allegation. But yeah, that sort of revelation is a rarity. Brock, yeah, I'm not even sure what happened there, what the ultimate outcome was. He talks about it here:

a lot of these stories about musicians were getting picked up for a while

true, but they are almost certainly a fraction, and not a large one. musicians targeting underage women as groupies didn't die out in the '70s, not by a long shot.

i'm guessing the caution has to do with the fact that this is some anonymous Twitter account ? I mean this seems pretty believable to me, I don't really know jack about Tool but even I know the stories surrounding Maynard which are very very similar to this one.

Yeah, it's possible some outlets are trying to get in touch, hear from MJK's reps, whatever. I noticed Kim Kelly mentioned it on her feed so it's definitely getting out there.

also that, plus the fact that tool is kind of outside the purview of a lot of music sites these days

A reporter would probably want to speak to the tweeter (even if agreeing to keep her anonymous) before writing it up. The fact that she doesn't name the city also complicates things, as a reporter can't put the musician's reps on the spot re: what he remembers doing during NiN's set that year in that particular city, etc. But, again, this may also inspire others to come forward (on the record).

Also maybe someone in his organization, who was aware of the behavior, will come forward.

A woman I knew in college talked about how the guitar player of a well-known band hit on her when she was a high-school senior visiting the college, and the band was there playing Spring Weekend. Passes for Maynard are different than the normal backstage pass for the show. A couple examples I can think of (and one I own that I received personally when they were out of normal ones) has a collage of women in KISS makeup sucking dick or other sexual acts. An APC one had a picture of Maynard in Roman garb that said "Have you serviced your gladiator today?" or something similar. There are no illusions about what you are there for.

As for the reddit post, as icky as it all sounds and big if true, , it doesn’t sound like sexual abuse? Makes it seem like they go there willingly and upright knowing it’s for sex.
