Anything that riles Shearer *and* Lawrenson this much has something going for it tho

Swedes and Löw (Noodle Vague), Monday, 25 June 2018 19:59 (five years ago) link

foxsoccer twitter letting me down badly when it counts most by not posting a clip of cron apparently killing a fella and getting away with it scot free

don't let deems tell you otherwise, cron did kill a man. they're arranging his funeral as we speak.

VAR redeemed once again with the second Spain goal, annoying tho it may be

nashwan, Monday, 25 June 2018 20:00 (five years ago) link

at least "iran, iran so far away" won't be stuck in my head for any more games

thomasintrouble, Monday, 25 June 2018 20:02 (five years ago) link

I am shocked, shocked, that Alan Fucking Shearer thinks an elbow to the face is ok

Swedes and Löw (Noodle Vague), Monday, 25 June 2018 20:02 (five years ago) link

it's never a handball, but if you're gonna give decisions like that it should be an indirect free

Number None, Monday, 25 June 2018 20:03 (five years ago) link

From all of the eliminated teams atm, Morocco's Nordin Amrabat is the steal of the century. What a beast.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 25 June 2018 20:04 (five years ago) link

I enjoyed Drogba nodding sagely while everyone else ripped into play acting on the pitch.

Matt DC, Monday, 25 June 2018 20:07 (five years ago) link

Morocco are I think the best of the eliminated teams, they were unlucky to get that group.

Matt DC, Monday, 25 June 2018 20:19 (five years ago) link

instant replay review makes sports, nay life, immeasurably worse.

paul mccartney & whinge (voodoo chili), Monday, 25 June 2018 20:22 (five years ago) link

should be for goal line review and nothing else

paul mccartney & whinge (voodoo chili), Monday, 25 June 2018 20:22 (five years ago) link

they don't need it for goal line review

Number None, Monday, 25 June 2018 20:25 (five years ago) link

Has the old fashioned goal line technology been needed even once this tournament?

Matt DC, Monday, 25 June 2018 20:26 (five years ago) link

definitely saw it used in at least one game, but it wasn't close to a goal

Number None, Monday, 25 June 2018 20:27 (five years ago) link

Ref was making it all about him, ugh

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 25 June 2018 20:27 (five years ago) link

you're right, they don't need video replay for goal line review, but they do need goal line tech.

paul mccartney & whinge (voodoo chili), Monday, 25 June 2018 20:28 (five years ago) link

yeah but that's an automatic decision. There's no interpretation involved

Number None, Monday, 25 June 2018 20:30 (five years ago) link

I mean I guess I'm just being a dick about agreeing with you

Number None, Monday, 25 June 2018 20:31 (five years ago) link

all i want to know is should i watch ESP or POR at 11pm BST or whenever the fuck the bbc platform finally crunches through the data and makes it available

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 25 June 2018 20:54 (five years ago) link

pogba goal was goal line tech iirc

thomasintrouble, Monday, 25 June 2018 20:56 (five years ago) link

Only caught the last ten minutes but Spain v Morocco sounds like the better game.

Russia will probably do a Netherlands 2008-style number on Spain now while Portugal beat Uruguay 1-0 on pens.

nashwan, Monday, 25 June 2018 20:56 (five years ago) link

def catch iran portugal it was super entertainment the whole second half

didi hamann all but wearing a beret slouched in an rte chair lazily lamenting what weve lost with var, the emotion in the moment the beauty of a wrong decision become truth itself on the flawed platform of a man in black inarguable and unyielding, a metaphor for life itself.

spoiled by then whining in his pitiful reggie perrin mien that it doesnt even get everything right anyway as if he hadnt just contradicted himself completely

> whenever the fuck the bbc platform finally crunches through the data and makes it available

(i have a kickstart meeting tomorrow for the project to speed this up)

i think that if you start iplayer whilst the stream is running (ie before it ends) then you can rewind to the start and watch it from the buffer. buffer might only be two hours long though. after it ends you have to wait for the, yes, long transcode. it's complicated.

yes, here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/live/bbcfour is the spain match, and if you'd've started within 2 hours of kickoff you could've seen the whole thing via the buffer (it's currently 56 minutes in)

BBC Blog, "Inside our UHD workflow"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/internet/entries/b56edd34-a1d8-4ef9-9d2d-1c93eda18f73

over 5Tbits per second streamed during ENG-TUN

(red card fwiw, he swung his arm back deliberately, if the other player had been 2 inches further away it would've been an elbow in the face)

koogs, Monday, 25 June 2018 21:24 (five years ago) link

https://www.reddit.com/r/footballhighlights/ has full games up more or less instantaneously

Number None, Monday, 25 June 2018 21:30 (five years ago) link

Also, wasn't there something in the Olympics where each team had a limited number of video appeals they could ask for?

koogs, Monday, 25 June 2018 21:43 (five years ago) link

the olympics also has horses and divin boards dyou want them too dyou

under a mand'rin tsar (darraghmac), Monday, 25 June 2018 21:45 (five years ago) link

I was watching on iPlayer about 90 mins behind. Computer crashed at one point and was then told the game would be "available soon".

Then choosing to watching BBC1 live though (EastEnders) was able to rewind back to the football xps

groovypanda, Monday, 25 June 2018 21:55 (five years ago) link

thanks koogs and groovypanda!

i tried the buffer trick but there's no rewind on live streams w my roku stick, or at least none I've found

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 25 June 2018 22:19 (five years ago) link

I tried the UHD live but it started buffering after a minute so I went back to regular tv

Swedes and Löw (Noodle Vague), Monday, 25 June 2018 22:28 (five years ago) link

i watched Spain/Morocco in the end and that was some good shyt

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 26 June 2018 00:02 (five years ago) link

Morocco so good

Ramos on the losing end of both their goals iirc

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 26 June 2018 00:05 (five years ago) link

caught the portugal iran replay tonight, damn that was quite a ride!

spain morocco great too but by hod i could do without warren barton slobbering on about the magic of spain bleuch, i had to mute him

yeah the praise for Spain gets ridiculous sometimes. Sure, they combine nicely, but they hardly score (which is.. may I remind the commentators, the 'goal' of football)

Ludo, Tuesday, 26 June 2018 06:46 (five years ago) link

to score and to prevent opponents from doing so, which comfortable possession is a very good way of achieving

under a mand'rin tsar (darraghmac), Tuesday, 26 June 2018 06:56 (five years ago) link

Spain certainly had that whole keeping possession thing nailed last night.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 26 June 2018 08:02 (five years ago) link

I'VE scored goals, you'll need to do better than that to get me interested

ogmor, Tuesday, 26 June 2018 08:06 (five years ago) link

There is an underlying utilitarian logic to football that, when adhered to strictly, produces something sublime like Don Revie's Leeds or the current Iceland team, something so perfectly efficient that it's just too much to watch.

Swedes and Löw (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 26 June 2018 08:10 (five years ago) link

I think that's true but I think the same is true of the Pep Barcelona side - a system implemented to an absurd perfection.

Tim, Tuesday, 26 June 2018 08:25 (five years ago) link

the transcendent blandness of harry kane has been enchanting me over recent seasons. he's a paragon of efficiency with just enough passion and ego to be effective without it hindering his performance. he's streamlined his game and his personality, always keen and ambitious but never overexcited, just eternally passing it into the bottom corner

ogmor, Tuesday, 26 June 2018 08:28 (five years ago) link

xp (Each of these sides was dirty too, a perfect system can't tolerate the chaos of 11 human people trying to interfere.)

Tim, Tuesday, 26 June 2018 08:31 (five years ago) link

there is a collective ecstasy abt pep teams in full flow that goes beyond the unencumbered mind of a ruthless optimiser

ogmor, Tuesday, 26 June 2018 08:38 (five years ago) link

agreed, i just didn't have adequate words.

Swedes and Löw (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 26 June 2018 08:42 (five years ago) link

I think that ecstacy's there in the Revie Leeds and maybe even in the current Iceland teams though [I dunno, maybe it's a different flavour that I can't really taste, I've never been one for the idea of 2playing football the right way" or whatevs]. The looks on the faces of the Icelanders when going down to that defeat against Nigeria, it was like they were waking up from a beautiful dream.

Tim, Tuesday, 26 June 2018 08:44 (five years ago) link

bbc punditry on the spain game was absolutely insufferable.. "sure they pass well but where's the GOALZ0RRR?>!!?!?!"

*Narrator*: Spain won the group

also the completely inevitable moan that "it's such a shame that VAR has affected the outcome of this match" on the offside call in 92' - which VAR CORRECTED. apparently it's quite alright if an assistant ref affects the outcome of a match. but once you double check it the World Cup is ruined.

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 26 June 2018 10:28 (five years ago) link

Stopping the other team scoring seems to be more of a problem for Spain at the moment.

womp womp that sucker (Tom D.), Tuesday, 26 June 2018 10:47 (five years ago) link

In the other game they kept banging on about how Portugal needed to win the group to avoid Uruguay but I'm not sure playing the host nation next is particularly preferable.

groovypanda, Tuesday, 26 June 2018 10:50 (five years ago) link

I think it is. Uruguay know how to get a job done. Russia are pretty much done for the WC.
