Playing this album in its entirety on his current tour, with a seven piece band. Saw them last night and it was really incredible. Anyway, I know there are a few fans here so I was just wondering how everyone feels about this record.

xpost I was at the show last night thinking it was funny that the last time I was at that venue was for a Joan Crawford fan convention a few years ago where a guy covered "Explain".

This album along with 'LP2' age 15 was kind of my bridge from Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead to "indie" music. Kinda set an unrealistic expectation for quality which fortunately lead to me giving up on indie rock by 19 and on to better things. But still really find this album in particular charming.

xp I was at that convention and that was Scott Baio playing Explain. He tries to be incognito in public to avoid libcuck attacks

just curious what you moved on to?

alpine static, Monday, 25 June 2018 03:08 (five years ago) link

The shortest answer is I moved on from prioritizing the tiny sliver of time of the present, and fully opened myself up to the decades of recorded music, and quit caring about "new" or "current" per se in favor of whatever spoke to me. At the time the huge catalyzers were Can, Talking Heads, Fela Kuti, James Brown, Roxy Music, Nick Drake, Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, Charles Mingus, the Nonesuch Explorer Series, etc.

Abigail Anne knocked me cold when this was new and still does. Ugh the drama is still almost too much.

Shade and the Black Hat gets the vote for boiling over so irresistibly and unashamedly.

no wait maybe it's the title track?

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 25 June 2018 15:16 (five years ago) link

can't believe i never made a thread for ghosts, it is absolutely the best album that came out last year

my theory is that SDRE was a good band, but Jeremy is what made them special, right?

apologies if that's a "yeah, duh" statement.

the guy has such a distinctive style.

alpine static, Tuesday, 3 July 2018 00:05 (five years ago) link

also what the hell anniversary are they celebrating w/ the reissue? 22 years?!

alpine static, Tuesday, 3 July 2018 00:19 (five years ago) link

everyone in that band (in the original lineup at least) made that band special

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 00:27 (five years ago) link

though jeremy’s specialness is more pronounced with frog queen and the reunion/how it feels

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 00:28 (five years ago) link

xp otm, the first two records were all about those four specific players and the way they interacted. "Jeremy is what made them special" theory holds water re: Flatland Spider 7" but I think their greatness is more to do with the special magic of the four of them together than it is about any one of them in particular.

xxp yeah, it actually had me questioning my memory when I saw it marketed as the "anniversary edition"! I originally bought the CD at a store on the boardwalk in Virginia Beach (!?) while on vacation with my family, and I was struggling to reconcile this fact with my only other memory of that vacation which was a discussion of the 1996 Summer Olympics with my cousin.

Enigk and Mobb Deep, two acts that screwed up ann'y releases / didn't bother hitting a 5-year increment

sounds like a possible thread

just listened to this album for the first time and it's shade and the black hat

or explain.

this is a really good album thank you for creating and contributing to this thread

Voted for Explain. It's a peculiarly-produced track that clips out all over the place and I think the guitar is out of tune but that all just adds to the mystique.

If I could move the weight of everything
Blind the skies and change the 'tomic role
Here I am and not the answers
Only scars can show this time
I'm still wandering 'round your door

How can I explain dear
You've been gone for some time
But I still believe you'll be here oh no.......... again
