.ogg??!!? WTF? (yes, I have heard of ogg and vorbis and ogg vorbis, but I don't know what to do with them)

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 10 December 2005 05:07 (eighteen years ago) link

It's just another lossy compression format. Google "ogg vorbis player" and bob's your uncle, or however the saying goes. I use Whamb.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 10 December 2005 05:41 (eighteen years ago) link

there's a cool version on Jacques Berrocal's "Catalogue"..

Hello, douchebags. The Billy Bang/Dennis Charles version that Doug Schulkind just played is really good.

Sorry, meant to mention that it was on WFMU. They'll probably have the show up on the archive in a couple of hours.

Ahhh, the balmy ysi days of ILM, how I miss you.

Anyway, just relieved this thread still exists because I have been listening to the Peter Brotzmann version for days without knowing what who it was. Avaialble to listen to and buy here incidentally.

There's a great version of it on Marzette Watts' hella out-of-print Savoy record.

I've decided that Ornette's Lonely Woman is my favourite piece of jazz music. Not a lot seems to come close - or does it? IS there anything else out there as melodic and plaintive and slightly-skewed as this? Big question, I know.

Yes, Cecil Taylor's version of "This Nearly Was Mine."

Here's a version from James Blood Ulmer's Music Speaks Louder Than Words, a strange record that mixes six instrumental versions of Ornette tunes with three original blues/funk/rap songs. I believe this album features the only recordings of the Coleman compositions "Cherry Cherry" and "Street News".

Pretty sure that date is wrong; I believe this was recorded in 1969. Unfortunately, this has never been reissued.
