The Smiths?

I can't believe no one's mentioned the Smiths!

Or are The Smiths too obvious?

Nobody replied, in complete shame as so many worship Mozzer & Marr.

Check out the Feelies side-projects - especially the Yung Wu record.

Also, from Boston, Men & Volts, who alternated between doing a weird Beefheartian thing and really interested pop songs. 21-645 (who had a couple of 45s) are fantastic as well.

Also worth checking out are the Bird Nest Roys and the amazing Verlaines, both from New Zealand and on the Flying Nun label, of course.

The website www.littlehits.com has some amazing stuff, and a new song is added every day...check it!

My goodness, everybody's been so nice with their jangle-rock suggestions. I'd be jangling for the next ten years, but for my current obsession with Glen Campbell The Capitol Years, 1965-1977.

The sad part is, that's a 2 cd, 46 song monstrosity, and I can still name about fifteen great songs that I can't believe aren't on it. How the hell can you have a Glen Campbell best-of without Roll Me Easy? Geez Louise!

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 22:33 (eighteen years ago) link

The Wygals were an excellent choice.

If you can dig up anything by mid-80's NC band One Plus Two I'd highly recommend it.

I love the Reivers though the production on their Capitol records may sabotage the overall sound. There are moments of brilliance buried in there, worth searching out. "Saturday" and "End of the Day" still give me chills.

If you like Vulgar Boatmen then check out some later period Gizmos stuff, they share members. There were also two transitional bands called The Satellites and Right To Left that Dale and Shadow were in, but they're Indiana obscurities with only self-released cassettes.

what the hell was the name of that American band who were on Sarah records? Jangly as hell, pudding bowl fringes, went on to be Velvet Crush, I think.

The Sunflowers?
no, wait - the Springfields. Them, anyway. None more jangly.

sleeve, would you happen to be able to share this (or the other stuff you mention)? i had an old gizmo's nth generation tape a loooong time ago, but it's gone and this is impossible to find now. as for the other bands you mention, i've never heard of 'em and would love to give a listen.

Hootie and the Blowfish

OTM, actually. Funny enough, the covers album, Scattered, Smothered and Covered, includes covers of songs by a bunch of people mentioned (or who should have been mentioned) on this thread:

The Smiths
R.E.M.
The Silos
54-40
Vic Chestnut
Reivers
Don Dixon

The first Gigolo Aunts LP on Coyote was all about the jangle. Every municipality had an REM proxy band. Jersey/West Village offered Winter Hours, they were pretty alright.

Anybody mention The Mice? Whole lotta good, fast janglin' going on there. Their two records were issued on one cd last year called Almost Forever Scooter. The Numero label's Yellow Pills power pop comp would do ya too. Also check Wanna Meet The Scruffs by The Scruffs, esp. the song "I'm a Failure".
I saw the Windbreakers mentioned before. Can Electric Landlady still be found on cd? I'd love to get my hands on it.

Bren (Bren), Thursday, 13 October 2005 17:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Ok, upon further review, Yellow Pills not a jangle fest. There were a few tracks on the first disc that I was thinking of...still good, though.

i recommends the UK band Hurrah! Their 'sound of philadelphia' comp on rev-ola is jangly wonderment. although their later work isn't quite as good

wasn't sure where to put this, but has anyone heard Arrogance w/Don Dixon? I came across their name in the liner notes to a teenline comp years ago, but still haven't heard them. anyone?

not from the 80's exactly, but imperial teen are great and jangly. gravity talks by green on red is a good record, but i never thought of them as jangly. too much velvets in their sound for that, imo

pobrecito (outdoor_miner), Saturday, 30 January 2010 16:37 (fourteen years ago) link

hmm maybe i'll find a better thread for my arrogance query. according to allmusic they went from byrdsjangle/early-mid70s West Coast post-psych/pop/rock/folk-rock/country-rock to more rocking powerpop?

Dream Syndicate - Days of Wine & Roses
The Rain Parade - Emergency Third Rail Power Trip
The Silos - Cuba & self titled The Silos (which I think was their 3rd record)
The Plimsouls - Everywhere at Once
The Go Betweens - Before Hollywood
Camper Van Beethoven - II & III, Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart
Robyn Hitchcock- Globe of Frogs
The Church - Heyday
The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms & Only Life
Pylon - Chomp & Gyrate

earlnash, Saturday, 30 January 2010 23:23 (fourteen years ago) link

The guitar-skronk of Dream Syndicate and Gang of Four-isms of Pylon, though I love both, don't really jangle to me. One pretty jangly LP I've pulled out several times recently is "Greenhouse" by Absolute Grey (1984,) which has lots of that strummy Rickenbacker sound of early REM.

Despite being a fan of Shack, I didn't listen to the full Pale Fountains albums until this week. Not bad!

The Pale Fountains - Pacific Street (Virgin, 1984)
The Pale Fountains - …From Across The Kitchen Table (Virgin, 1985)

Also Ian Broudie post-Wild Swans/pre-Lightning Seeds:

Care - Diamonds & Emeralds (Camden, 1984)

A friend was listening to the Shrimp Boat box set, which made me think that a label like Captured Tracks needs to put out box sets of The Jazz Butcher and Game Theory.
