Ned does indeed understate.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Well when I posted that I had just gotten home at 3 am and was not coherent much. I should note that I am not much improved at this point.

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWK

Highlight for me -- the Neu!/motorik tribute break in that one monster song they always do. It lasted for 10 minutes and reduced any other band's attempt to do same in recent years, from Stereolab to Sonic Youth to whoever, to rubble.

Subarachnoid weren't bad (seen them better, though), Earthless were a revelation and definitely deserve to be seen live.

Marco, I did indeed pass on your best, they were happily appreciative, and Hiroshi thought very highly of grappa.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:19 (nineteen years ago) link

ha ha! glad to know they are great as usual - the concert they played in padova a couple of years ago was a total highlight for me.
hiroshi and i had a couple of long chats in which, i must admit, grappa played a key role...

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:36 (nineteen years ago) link

The tour-only CD this time around, Hypnotic Liquid Machine from the Golden Utopia, is a freakin' monster so far -- to the point where, for the first time in eighteen months, my neighbor one cubicle over came over to ask what in the world I was listening to. "It sounds like static!" (Note: it does not in fact sound like static -- it sounds like AMT.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:50 (nineteen years ago) link

The big monster song they always play is "Pink Lady Lemonade," 'less I'm mistaken.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 14:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks, yeah -- I know the song, forgot the name.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I think the motorik rave up Ned's referring to is "In E," def a personal favorite.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I was there too. Favorite band were Earthless, actually. Why haven't I heard of them before? Now I can say "my city's noise band kicks your city's noise band's ass." Kinda like Wolf Eyes meets Oneida at Built to Spill's house? (sorry...) I bought the CD and will check it out when/if my ears ever stop ringing.

Subarachnoid Space were boring as fuck. Must have been great for bar sales. It didn't help that the bass player wore a Grateful Dead T - unironically!

AMT were great of course, but by the end I couldn't take any more. Did they do an encore?

Probably -- I have that around somewhere, must dig it out again.

I was there too.

It was a night for ILX! Not only myself and Elvis T. and Matt Maxwell and you, but Vahid and then famous athlete, who came up to me and asked "Are you Ned Raggett from I Love Music?" I was completely flustered! And I was talking to Mario from Earthless at the time and he probably wondered what the fuck was going on!

Favorite band were Earthless, actually. Why haven't I heard of them before?

Hell, I've been on the Rocket list forever (in that Mario from Earthless is the same Mario in Rocket and formerly with Clikitat Ikatowi) and I only just heard of them the other day -- now I have a fave new band! Emusic.com has the show from last night available -- they have some sorta Clear Channel deal with the Casbah -- while the CDR the band were selling is from a show there earlier in the year, I'm listening to it now. Three tracks, the first is a touch slower than what they played yesterday but still great -- however, they are DEFINITELY a live band, they've got that sheer room-filling explosive feeling down.

Subarachnoid miss Mason Jones a bit, I think. No encore as such from AMT -- just two goddamn hours of noise and wackiness.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:34 (nineteen years ago) link

thanks for the info, Ned. Do you by any chance have a link to last night's Earthless set on emusic? I just did an artist search over there and couldn't find it.

chëshy f cät, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe it takes time to upload? There were quite literally copies there thirty minutes after the show was over, ready for sale.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Also, try a venue search maybe, for the Casbah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah, wait, the CDR has this URL listed too:

Now of course, the ultimate tour:

Earthless
Earth

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:18 (nineteen years ago) link

(but my U + K question.. was the woman in AMT backhumping her synth Herrema-style?)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah no, Cotton is either out of the band permanently (as it seems) or on hiatus. When not playing guitar, Higashi was attacking the synth this time out, and not in Cotton's, ah, unique fashion. Four person lineup -- Kawabata, Higashi, Tsuyama on bass, Koizumi on drums

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:54 (nineteen years ago) link

The Atlanta show was total myndfuckness. Superb. Among the best shows I've ever seen. There.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I saw about half-an-hour of their set last night (I was splitting my time between AMT and, ahem, a different show elsewhere which was nowhere near as good even though there were like a billion kids there) and it fucking KICKED my ASS - their time-signature changes are so fluid & gorgeous

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 17 June 2004 18:06 (nineteen years ago) link

did they use a lot of percussion for this stuff or not

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Thursday, 17 June 2004 18:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Hm...the drummer's kit looked pretty standard to me, I seem to recall.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 June 2004 18:07 (nineteen years ago) link

well, i mean they used drums, right? i don't like the stuff without drums

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Thursday, 17 June 2004 18:09 (nineteen years ago) link

standard drum kit, yeah - drummer totally old-school, holds his sticks palms-up & is awesome

emmacleveland was there! I din't know there was other ilx0rs in my area!

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 17 June 2004 18:10 (nineteen years ago) link

d000000000d

amt in baltimore ruled. does anybody know anything about the song that tsuyama (bassist) introduced as "a new song"? it had yodeling and was UNBELIEVABLE.

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 18 June 2004 05:51 (nineteen years ago) link

god they played that in nc too!
Khoomei!

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Friday, 18 June 2004 06:38 (nineteen years ago) link

p.s. the decemberists < amt

oh I know! the people I was hangin' out with wanted to see the decemberists, and we left after two songs. (the long winters were really good though. just not as completely insanely mindblowing as AMT, who had one song that started in 4/4, shifted into 5/4 very subtly, then to 6/4, then back into 5/4...it made me woozy and punchy and delighted)

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 18 June 2004 10:19 (nineteen years ago) link

OH FUCKING LORD - RE: THAT VIDEO

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Friday, 18 June 2004 11:43 (nineteen years ago) link

drummer totally old-school, holds his sticks palms-up & is awesome

He was switching grips in the show in Denton, but yeah, he seemed really old school. There's something awesome about a stone-faced drummer with a crew cut playing with AMT.
