no, it's not US money, it's dollars that we're borrowing from China.

honestly with the way the dollar looks right now you're honestly better off spending this now and not saving since no investment you're likely to be able to make is going to match the $$ equivalent next april 15

in fact that $600 is already depreciating at a terrifying rate and nobody even has their grubby paws on it yet. I can't wait to see what the sales flyers look like two sundays from now

yeah, dealers should be getting very excited about this. hundreds of suddenly liquid customers popping out of the woodwork all at once demanding your product! basic microeconomics and the government working together for YOU

i'm gonna spend it in canada (thereby stimulating the economy north of the border instead of our), smuggle the stuff back into the states (avoiding paying duty on it, natch), then sell said items at a reasonable markup (and not charging sales tax or reporting the income).
THANKS FOR THE HANDOUT GWB!!!

Can someone explain to non-American why you're all getting 600 dollars?
― Tuomas, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:21 (sixteen years ago) link
because our government loves us very much and wants us to be happy
― dan m, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:23 (sixteen years ago) link
x-post
To make up for the fact that we are on our way to becoming a second-world country (at least).
Also I'm not sure what I'll spend mine on. Perhaps a nice pair of shoes or laser hair removal. Or a trunk full of subwoofers.

So the American government is giving everyone 600 $? In cash?
― Tuomas, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:26 (sixteen years ago) link
What's the story behind it?
Economy's in the toilet. Bush Administration figures if they give everyone $600, we'll all run out and spend it right away, thereby stimulating the economy.
― jaymc, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:27 (sixteen years ago) link
this thread is google result #2 for "six hundred dollars"

WHOOO AH!
tuomas, it is part of a very stupid plan to further delay a long-foreshadowed recession, despite the fact that said recession has already begun and will not blink twice in the face of a bunch of people spending $600 that we would normally have just paid to government in the form of income tax a year from now (and probably still will anyway).

for those of us who aren't american
The stimulus law signed by President Bush on Wednesday provides what he called a "booster shot" to the economy, but the medicine might not be strong enough to ward off a recession. The $168 billion package of personal tax rebates and business tax cuts will likely help shore up consumer spending later this year, economists say. That could minimize the pain of a possible downturn.

So they're all getting FREE MONEY in order to avoid, er, an economic downturn. Wait.

ha, you do, but not for $600.
i'm thinking of getting a nice crash cymbal, a cowbell + bass drum mount, and an extra cymbal stand. all the little things i've been missing from my jazz/new orleans kit.
