Knoxville Community Food Co-op on Broadway (East of downtown) for good groceries (not cheap, though.)

Urban bar in Old City has a really friendly waitress and also darts machines, and pool tables are usually empty. but word of warning, when you go there, do not put two songs from the same album on the jukebox, because that gets CENSORED and you end up losing a song for your money and effort. We learnt this the hard way, after trying to put the entire Clash album on the jukebox, followed by Sweet Child O' Mine, repeated 13 times.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Haw, yeah, Urban Bar is just your typical kind of downtown post-college, pre-wife and kids yuppie bar, but it's sort of become my local. I would actually not recommend it to anyone, but I end up taking everyone there. One thing I will let you know about is TWO DOLLAR PINT NIGHT (two nights a week now!) though.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:05 (nineteen years ago) link

re: jukebox, however, i have a theory that if you can find a song that's on 3 seperate albums, you can put in $1, and put those three songs on. then put in another $1, and put those three songs on again ad infinitum. But this has not been put into proper test yet (i could only find the sheryl crow cover of sweet child o' mine on one other album).

that one though, has benefits because that track contains a HIDDEN TRACK that'd also be played.

do you like DDR, caitlin?

One of the best heavy players in Knoxville hangs out frequently at the West Town Mall. That guy sometimes knocks himself over the machine and turns it off.

There's another, less heavy guy, there too who actually is good. But the day I was there I witnessed the tragedy of his girlfriend leaving him whilst he's playing! to go with this guy who does CAMP DANCING on the DDR machine.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:11 (nineteen years ago) link

i took a video of that guy's gay dancing.

I attended the '82 World's Fair! I remember it very very fondly.

aw, a small world afterall.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:26 (nineteen years ago) link

BUMPALUMP.

The new Waterfront is an excellent place to get drunk with a sweetheart at night. Daytime? So-so.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 19:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Explain this waterfront, please. I am suspicious.

Spencer as I recall the China pavilion was the one you had to stand in line for like three hours. All the other ones were like "please visit us." So we did it, stood in line that is, I mean it must have been good right, and made it there, and it was a bunch of guys who would engrave your name in soapstone for like $10 and my parents are like "no we've already paid enough just to have lunch today."

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:17 (nineteen years ago) link

It's just some corny structures and Bill Landry on speakerboxxxes telling you about the TN river, but it's nice at night, flanked by the two bridges to South Knox and facing the big old JFG sign, drinking a tallcan of Sparks (or whatever). Just your regular waterfront, I guess.

The riverboat is great, too! You can have a nice dinner on there.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:27 (nineteen years ago) link

aw that waterfront sounds nice

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Ijams Nature Center has had massive improvements. Some beautiful trails there. I just got back from a 20 minute walk during which I saw river otters, many fish, many varieties of flora (including this crazy plant that blooms on the side of its STALK), two herons, several bullfrogs, and a turtle. And a cute guy running with a cute dog.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 23:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I love Knoxville! It's official.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 23:11 (nineteen years ago) link

People are very excited about Sleater Kinney @ Sundown in the City.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 23:17 (nineteen years ago) link

oh geez, i've been ignoring my own thread. to answer everyone's questions...i will indeed have a car, like pancakes, not so into ddr, i like lots of kinds of music and i am a corny indie fuq...i will try to make it to see sleater-kinney since i am a huge riot grrl. i'm going to be there may 30th to july 22nd. i hope there won't be too much math to do and i will have time for fun.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 23:19 (nineteen years ago) link

i also loev used bookstores and art fag movies. this is exciting.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 23:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Bands:

Tenderhooks (This is my band. I assure you we are good.)
The Bloodiest Night of My Life (like a screamy Sebadoh, maybe. They are very good.)
Ibrahim (indie-ish, mostly instrumental slow-core)
The aforementioned Dixie Dirt
Twinkiebots (if you get the chance. Reclusive singer-songwriter and one of my BFFS. The most talented person I know. Knoxville's Syd Barrett.)
Royal Bangs (rock and roll with bleeps and things)

Lots of others. Little help?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 23:28 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm so pleased to hear about the abundance of good women's clinics, because now i have somewhere to go when i've had too much fun.

SURPRISE

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 1 June 2005 17:37 (eighteen years ago) link

caitlin, do you have a car?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 17:50 (eighteen years ago) link

yes. it's just too hot! downtown looks kind of emptyish, and everything else is in strip malls. mostly i just like the north better. actually, i like how there is a street on campus called CHAMIQUE HOLDSCLAW DRIVE.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Eep! You're over here in the Southeast! You're about an eight-or-nine hour drive from me! (If that sounds alarming, keep in mind that I'm in Florida and that Miami is a 8 to 9-hour drive from my city in the opposite direction.)

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:58 (eighteen years ago) link

"Chamique Holdsclaw Drive" was the tail end of a rash of street-naming mania from the former mayor. I think it started with a street for Phil Fulmer, but then they had to do one for Pat Summitt, and then came Peyton Manning Pass (har har), but then they had to do one for Tee Martin because he actually won a championship, and then to keep things even they had to give one to Chamique. It's a good thing the mayor got term-limited, they were going to start running out of streets. He even named one for Gerald Ford, for no discernible reason. (Hizzoner is now ambassador to Poland...)

But hey, I was just in Knoxville last week for the first time in two years. If you think downtown's empty, you shoulda seen it five years ago. There's actually a lot more going on now, lots of little restaurants and stores on Market Square and stuff. Then again, downtown seems lively to me because I have a bunch of friends who live and work there, so it's got a nice neighborhood feeling. Definitely go to the Sundown in the City shows, at least you'll see some people there. But it probably took me about three years to really love Knoxville, so it might not be something you'll feel in a few months.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 2 June 2005 00:14 (eighteen years ago) link

(I was mildly surprised to discover that the new "trendy" bar on Gay Street -- it brags about serving $8 martinis, which is real money in Knoxville -- actually had crowds.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 2 June 2005 00:18 (eighteen years ago) link

oh, also i like how there is a gay street. and another one on campus called "melrose place"???

i guess i ignored the advice and ate at kashmir. the owner was weird and mean.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Thursday, 2 June 2005 00:31 (eighteen years ago) link

Sitar is better than Kashmir, but it's out in Bearden. The Japanese place on Gay is supposed to be pretty good. But yeah, Asian cuisine isn't exactly the city's forte. Have some biscuits instead.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 2 June 2005 00:35 (eighteen years ago) link

We've got a Gay Street here, too, near Florida State Univ. -- and the Melrose Apartments (where a lot of college students stay) were built while Melrose Place was on the air.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 2 June 2005 00:38 (eighteen years ago) link

There have been a few proposals in recent decades to change the name of Knoxville's Gay Street, for the reasons you'd expect. Hasn't happened, tho.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 2 June 2005 00:39 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't really understand biscuits. or bacon fat.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Thursday, 2 June 2005 00:41 (eighteen years ago) link

caitlin, have you tried some of the other suggestions on here? Drinking beer at the Long Branch is highly recommended, for instance. As is King Tut's.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 2 June 2005 00:49 (eighteen years ago) link

i only just got here on sunday! also i'm supposed to be doing math but i just got internet an hour ago. i ate at oodles on monday because it was the only place open. it was ok. also i am only 20 so no one is allowed to give me the beer.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Thursday, 2 June 2005 00:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Aw, I bet the Longbrach will serve you. Maybe not, though, it's pretty severe around the campus. Go find roxymuzak, she lives on my parents' street! She will totally hook you up!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 2 June 2005 00:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, Tomato Head's closed on Mondays, right? That's the place to go next time you're on the square.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 2 June 2005 01:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Also go to my friend Andie's dress shop. It's called Vagabondia.

Sunrise, one of my favorite silent films ever, is playing at the Knoxville Museum of Art tomorrow (Thursday, 6/2). And the jaw-droppingly great Melt-Banana are playing the Pilot Light next Wednesday (6/8).

(Hope nobody minds if I plug my Chattanooga-centric music/film blog: http://www.livejournal.com/users/spap_oop/ )

Ernest P. (ernestp), Thursday, 2 June 2005 01:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Melt-Banana are playing at the Pilot Light????!!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 2 June 2005 02:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, I saw the flier for that in their window. Did a doubletake.

I've been eyeing this thread for a while now and I've been suspicious of things like Mike (to whom I'd like to be similar) and all I can really add is:

1. Gelatine
2. Johnny
