nah weltman and hammond are pretty good. they'll come up with a decent team if they get the time to do so.

call all destroyer, Friday, 22 June 2018 04:07 (five years ago) link

something i've been thinking about is how there's a really good chance that the first two players selected in this draft don't end up being in the top 5 players this draft produces.

call all destroyer, Friday, 22 June 2018 04:09 (five years ago) link

I'm an Ayton skeptic. But then, teams with lottery picks usually have lottery picks because they have crappy front offices who make bad draft picks, give bad contracts and make bad trades.

A is for (Aimless), Friday, 22 June 2018 04:19 (five years ago) link

pretty wild no current players were traded tonight

Experienced (non-draftee) players to be traded on draft night/day:
2018: 0
2017: 11
2016: 11
2015: 18
2014: 9

it's bad

ciderpress, Friday, 22 June 2018 11:28 (five years ago) link

I mean why trade future assets for a current player to try and compete with (a) Warriors (b) Rockets (c) wherever LeBron ends up.

Minister of the Pillow (fionnland), Friday, 22 June 2018 12:06 (five years ago) link

My fellow Pistons fans are completely delusional.

The Detroit Pistons traded for Khyri Thomas, a defensive wing from Creighton, who should add to their depth on the wing.

Thomas, 22, is a 6-foot-4 shooting guard with a 6-10 wingspan and scouts out as a 3-and-D prospect. He was a terror on defense in the Big East, winning two consecutive Big East defensive player of the year awards. He’s also a career 40 percent 3-point shooter with over 300 career attempts in college.

The Pistons reportedly will send two future second-round picks to the Sixers, who drafted Thomas No. 38 overall. The Pistons also drafted Bruce Brown with their own pick at No. 42 overall.

Some quality insane comments:

Kyhri might actually be the perfect fit at PG with this roster.

Age a side this kid has everything you want in a prospect. He’s a top defender, he can slash and get his shot, he is an career 40% 3pt shooter and his is a competent passer. They got him in the second. Based on those skills alone he should have been a top 20 pick. Someone please explain. There are guys who can’t do half of what he can. Plus he does efficiently. Has the Pistons luck turned.

Really liking our draft.

Who knows if it will translate, but I'm seeing some Kawhi-like traits in Kyrhi

- Excellent defender who can guard the whole perimeter and insane efficient offense.
- Avg 15 ppg on only 10 FGA (takes only good shots from what I’ve read)
- 54% FG (64% 2FG) – crazy for a 6-3 guard.
- .650 TS this year (.607 over his 3 yr career) – again crazy for a guard.
- Appear to have similar body types too.

Very excited about this pick.

lol who was even running the pistons draft?

call all destroyer, Friday, 22 June 2018 14:56 (five years ago) link

Tom Gores!

Gores lives in Beverly Hills, California[28] with his wife Holly[29] and three children, Katrina, Amanda, and Charles.[30] He also has a condo in Birmingham, Michigan.[31]

i've heard the case made that doncic may make more sense for a team that's a little further along and young may make more sense for a team that's a blank slate (also young next to smith wouldn't work at all), but yeah ultimately it's a straight player evaluation and someone is going to come out on top.

If trae young ends up being as valuable as doncic, schlenk will look like a genius getting him plus the Mavs future 1st. If Young is out of the league in 4 years and doncic is a stud, schlenk will never be a gm again. So yeah, pretty big gamble

Heez, Saturday, 23 June 2018 00:31 (five years ago) link

ive decided the spurs and kawhi's group are playing chicken.

kawhi's camp is like "trade kawhi to LA (lakers, wink)"

spurs see lakers got hella cap space and the ability to add two max free agents this summer. if they trade after july 1, lakers could trade for kawhi into cap space before they sign a big-name FA. but lakers won't wait on a kawhi trade bc they'll want to commit to signing lebron (if he wants to come) +1 (PG13, CP3, boogie all possibilities). so spurs wait to see if the lakers sign two big name free agents knowing it'll cost em about $65M and all their cap space this year AND next to do so, making a kawhi-to-LAL free agency signing in 2019 basically impossible without trading away their entire young core plus trying to find a suitor for luol deng's last year of his contract.

at the same time, if kawhi is telling everyone it's LAL or bust, no team will trade much for him. so spurs risk dumping him for pennies on the dollar to some team that knows he's gone in a year.

if LAL does eat up all their cap space this summer, though, that should put some real fear into kawhi's camp that LAL is just not happening in the next few years and will have to decide if skipping out on however many tens of millions of dollars is worth leaving if they're not going to end up where they wanted all along. in which case, if they want to leave more than anything, they may open up their trade destination preferences and spurs can get better competing offers. or they might just say fuck it, let's get hella paid right now and try to get over all the bullshit.

21st savagery fox (m bison), Saturday, 23 June 2018 03:48 (five years ago) link

yeah that all makes sense

call all destroyer, Saturday, 23 June 2018 03:56 (five years ago) link

clippers, on the other hand, will have very clean books by 2019, so as long as kawhi is cool with playing for the next 5 years being second fiddle to lebron and friends, its on

21st savagery fox (m bison), Saturday, 23 June 2018 04:04 (five years ago) link

the thing i dont understand is kawhi seems like the least LA guy why does he want to be there

sprout god (lag∞n), Saturday, 23 June 2018 05:58 (five years ago) link

it's home.

his uncle is his business manager, word is it's family over everything, and i think when ppl refer to kawhi's "camp" it's mostly family and friends from LA. a lot of the fan narrative in SA is that kawhi's uncle et al are the scheming villains pulling kawhi's strings as if kawhi would naturally re-sign in SA left to his own devices, which is super condescending. kawhi probably just wants to go back home and live it up as a hoops star.

21st savagery fox (m bison), Saturday, 23 June 2018 14:20 (five years ago) link

from a business standpoint idgi because they're leaving tens of millions of dollars on the table by passing up the supermax and even more if he signs somewhere besides the team he's on after his contract is up in 2019.
