i have no business voting in this, but i'm really looking forward to the rollout. would love to learn some more about the king

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Saturday, 16 June 2018 17:07 (five years ago) link

I don't really have any business running this! I starting listening to Elvis in the early 90s because I thought """"he was the original punk"""" and then a bit later I was like "Viva Las Vegas" is the best song ever & it was all that 90s irony where your tongue starts in cheek and then by the end you actually love it.

droit au butt (Euler), Saturday, 16 June 2018 17:18 (five years ago) link

do they still play "An American Trilogy" during the laser show at Stone Mountain? dang, that was a moment where I felt genuine "southern pride" despite being a carpetbagger & a latino who the yee-hawers would probably have loved to lynch. but Elvis bellows while Lee rides off at Appomattox and I'm in tears, yee-hawing too.

I got the Amazing Grace compilation in college (same day I first heard Aretha’s, coincidentally), and the ‘70s tracks in particular floored me. In addition to fronting one of the best bands of the ‘70s, his voice was at it’s absolute peak.

Lobbying hard for the songs on He Touched Me, especially this take on Andraé Crouch’s “I’ve Got Confidence”:

Can Tomorrow Is A Long Time still be considered a Sway? It's kind of famous now. (for those unfamiliar, that's a relatively obscure track that places unusually high, named after the Rolling Stones poll where Sway finished 4.)

His cover of You Gave Me A Mountain is some all-time peak 70’s elvis imo. It’s a crushingly beautiful song as it is from Marty Robbins, but Elvis takes it to the summit

This one from Vegas Jan 26 1972 is my fave (the whole show is great)

One of the very best lesser-known Elvis songs, from the late 60s Memphis sessions. This could be my single favorite Elvis vocal perormance and is a lock for my top 5.

This is beautiful. Will probably make my ballot.

When watching the recent Elvis doc, I was reminded of how powerful the octave change is in this song — his voice was never better than in the ‘70s, and he knew exactly how to exploit every nuance:

Never Been To Spain is so bomb.

His gospel music is my other new love as an adult. Mum used to clean the house to it when I was a kid & I thought it was so uncool but now it just sounds like true devotion to me.

All his gospel stuff is great but when he grew into his voice it was a whole new level

i went tonight and yes they played the song. it was so nice to hear Elvis singing out in a big open lawn like that. for visuals they had a civil war section with lots of empty landscapes & explosions and zero rebel flags. during the song's triumphant ending they used animation to have the laser confederate generals on the mountain come to life and then break their swords. it was very surreal.

before this they had a bunch of Georgia songs: "Georgia on My Mind" by Ray Charles, "I Feel Good" by James Brown, "Tutti Frutti" by Little Richard, etc. the displays included portraits of the artists so at some point there was a 50 foot laser Little Richard on the side of the mountain.

when they played "Great Balls of Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis, they had fireballs cued up. "Devil Went Down to Georgia" was the highlight of the show & the one laser show/song combo you need to see. we left soon after (& before the ridiculously slow national anthem).

If I manage to put together what feels like a substantial ballot to me, “Burning Up” will definitely be on it. From my limited received knowledge about Elvis, I’ve always gotten the feeling that it was one of the songs that his more rockist fans loathed.

I keep coming back to this one, a nice rocking make-over of a Bob Wills tune.

I've got my ballot down to about 133 tracks now and it's surprising how many of them are songs associated with other artists.

re "songs associated with other artists" I was trying to think of a covers side poll that would work here but while there are songs where Elvis' version is the "definitive" one (Viva Las Vegas, Burning Love, etc) there are plenty of others not so clearly "owned" (even An American Trilogy). so I scrapped the idea.

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 18 June 2018 17:41 (five years ago) link

As far as overlooked soundtrack tunes, I stan for “Ito Eats” from Blue Hawaii, in which Elvis closes the gap between rockabilly stutter and calypso syncopation:

Sent my ballot!

Hope I'm not the only one voting for Crawfish, Pocketful of Rainbows and Animal Instinct as they're pretty high on my ballot and deserve a place in his best songs.

Btw, how many songs should the rollout feature? 50? 75? 100?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 25 July 2018 04:50 (five years ago) link

i voted for Crawfish!!

imo i think 50 is a good rollout?

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 25 July 2018 04:58 (five years ago) link

Animal Instinct is so underrated. Almost noone namedrops it when talking Elvis. It doesn't help that it was cut from one of his worst rated movies, Harum Scarum.
Hope it makes it because it's awesome and sounds like it should've been a James Bond theme, but in case it doesn't here's for your enjoyment:

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 26 July 2018 17:51 (five years ago) link

3-Way Tie (For James Last) (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 26 July 2018 23:22 (five years ago) link

I only sort of recently got into Elvis, so I still have a lot of blind spots in his discography and I'm sure that skewed my ballot a bit. I know I left off a number of deserving songs and have been second guessing it ever since I hit send.

(But I'm not second guessing my vote for Crawfish!)

Saw the Eugene Jarecki film today (which I had been mixing up with the other Elvis documentary until literally after it was over, when I got some clarification from a friend)--fascinating. The very pointed Trump element is definitely heavy-handed now and again, but not to the extent (for me, at least) that it ruins the film. Chuck D is excellent. Actually, I liked all three viewpoints on the cultural-appropriation question: Chuck D, Van Jones, and David Simon. Still have to see the other film.
