I just finished E7. My partner hates that I rub my feet on him because of my nails. Now I have the excuse that I am making him a zombie.

Chase/Logan character is waaay underwhelming; he makes Major look spicy. Maybe it's the actor. Although I loved him on Veronica Mars.

otm, I think the character needs to be either smarter or more intimidating for the super-stoic/serious personality to work. It's hard for me to tell if the issue is with the writing or the performance, probably some of both.

intheblanks, Friday, 15 June 2018 16:54 (five years ago) link

also loved him on veronica mars, one of a couple unpredictably great performances on that show

intheblanks, Friday, 15 June 2018 16:55 (five years ago) link

Yerac and intheblanks otm. Loved him as Logan, but found him one-note/one-dimensional as Chase.

As long as they're using VM actors, Ken Marino shoulda been Chase. Wacky and near-maniacal would've been more interesting for that character.

He makes a pretty good, if one dimensional, villain. Better than David Anders anyway.

Leaghaidh am br贸n an t-anam bochd (dowd), Friday, 15 June 2018 20:03 (five years ago) link

but he's not really a villain! that's what I like about his development in S4

sleeve, Friday, 15 June 2018 20:08 (five years ago) link

I didn't want to bring it up, but I am seriously surprised Blaine is still on the show. I was tired of his character in the first season.

Yerac, Friday, 15 June 2018 20:08 (five years ago) link

I think he was entirely miscast.

Yerac, Friday, 15 June 2018 20:09 (five years ago) link

He's got a villain's face. x-post

Leaghaidh am br贸n an t-anam bochd (dowd), Friday, 15 June 2018 20:10 (five years ago) link

I just see Doogie Howser.

Yerac, Friday, 15 June 2018 20:14 (five years ago) link

Interesting. Whatever issues I have with the show, I really like both of these characters and casting choices.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Friday, 15 June 2018 21:02 (five years ago) link

yeah, I like Blaine as well

sleeve, Friday, 15 June 2018 21:04 (five years ago) link

They seem to have toned down his music stannishness a bit, though, which is disappointing.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Friday, 15 June 2018 21:13 (five years ago) link

I think it's more interesting to make Chase Graves a little more like an average dude who's trying to deal with a crazy situation from an unprecedented position of power.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Friday, 15 June 2018 21:16 (five years ago) link

I guess I agree with that in theory, but everything in season 4 has been a little overloaded with plot and side characters so there hasn't really been any time or space to really delve into that. So in the end there's this kind of boring guy who is a major fulcrum of activity, and not enough time to flesh out his dilemmas because we have to see blaine's new crying assistant and the smuggling network guy with the pregnant fiance and so on.

intheblanks, Friday, 15 June 2018 22:16 (five years ago) link

Yeah, the overloading with plot and side characters is what I take issue with.

Also, I honestly just don't sympathize very much with Liv's passion for human smuggling and zombification.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Saturday, 16 June 2018 00:04 (five years ago) link

On the whole, it doesn't even seem like a right thing to do, on top of the dangerousness of it. I expect they're going to dig into that.

OMG Major on the pro rassler brains!

Martin Landau Ballet (Leee), Saturday, 16 June 2018 20:50 (five years ago) link

So the hockey goon episode, did I miss something about Don E and Major abducting a girl? It wasn't set up in any of the previous episodes, was it?

Martin Landau Ballet (Leee), Sunday, 17 June 2018 18:17 (five years ago) link

Ha, I wondered that too. It does get explained eventually but the writing was weird.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Sunday, 17 June 2018 18:34 (five years ago) link

I found ep 11 pretty affecting.

yeah we just finished that one, handled very well

also holy fuck at the riled up zombie mob

Finished this season last night. So good.

Yerac, Sunday, 17 June 2018 19:00 (five years ago) link

Wow, I was surprised by how strongly this season finished.

!!!!

I didn't think there'd be another - that's great news.

For Yanks who watch on NF:

Season 5 begins airing on The CW on May 2nd, 2019 and will be due to wrap up on at the end of July 2019. Netflix then gets new The CW shows around a week after the finale airs. The show will then likely be available on Netflix in either late July or early August 2019.

Dear Britain,

I can confirm that @NetflixUK has made the first episode of season 5 of #iZOMBiE available to watch NOW. Directed by the wonderful @danetheridge and written by the equally wonderful @RobThomas, the brain this week is a little gift to you... 馃嚞馃嚙 pic.twitter.com/8nPvKzqEmD

Oh yeah, it's available in Canada too. I guess we're on the Brit schedule.

I honestly don't remember everything that happened in the last season. I did start rewatching some of s1.

There was zombie trafficking and she became princess of Aldovia.

Thx

A totally-not-unbearable performance from Rahul Kohli to ease us into the new season.

Hm, I think I agree with a lot of this: https://tv.avclub.com/izombie-returns-for-its-final-season-not-with-a-figura-1834491839 . I liked this as a funny show about a hot zombie detective solving cases of the week; I don't know that it was ever built to support the large-scale story arcs and themes that seem to be consuming it now. (Admittedly, I'm also just bad at keeping up with those things, which is an obstacle for me with most sci-fi and fantasy; I struggle to even remember who e.g. Thumb Breaker Barnes was or why Blaine has an assistant who cries uncontrollably, let alone all of the details of the current political organization of Zombie Seattle). The whole zombification/smuggling crusade seems like a terrible idea to begin with so I have trouble sympathizing with any of it.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 5 May 2019 13:55 (four years ago) link

why Blaine has an assistant who cries uncontrollably

It's a glandular problem.

Anyway, I was not as impressed with the last season for the reasons you mention. Rob Thomas is good at writing personal melodrama, not so much at writing about Issues (see the feminist stuff in VM).

Lars Ulriac Quintet (Leee), Sunday, 5 May 2019 19:14 (four years ago) link

yeah, I am not even going to try to remember what the overly complicated storylines were supposed to be anymore.

Yerac, Sunday, 5 May 2019 20:46 (four years ago) link

First ep was a clunker, all told, but like everybody else I don't care about the story arc and just wanted it to be police-procedural-on-brains-of-the-week.

Elitist cheese photos (aldo), Monday, 6 May 2019 16:44 (four years ago) link

X-Files had a similar dynamic, mytharc episodes became tiresome and hard to follow but monster-of-the-week episodes could still knock it out of the park

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Monday, 6 May 2019 16:47 (four years ago) link

I'm guessing those storylines are fun to write or something, because they're usually a chore to watch

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Monday, 6 May 2019 16:47 (four years ago) link

That was the first time I bailed on an episode.

two weeks pass...

S5e3 was a bit of an improvement, with a renewed focus on the murder and brains of the week and great scenes of McIver dancing. (Liv had to eat the brains of a competitive dancer.) I still can't get much into all the Fillmore Graves/Renegade/walled Seattle/humans vs zombie malarkey but that stuff doesn't take over the whole episode like it seemed to with the first two episodes. (Funny to reread the thread and see myself defending the longer story arcs in the first two seasons: I did like the Blaine storyline at that point and the Max Rager stuff.)

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 04:23 (four years ago) link

S5E4 another crapfest though. The series is going to whimper out.

Elitist cheese photos (aldo), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 07:12 (four years ago) link

This episode was good!

Leaghaidh am br贸n an t-anam bochd (dowd), Friday, 31 May 2019 15:23 (four years ago) link

E5 was! At least it's clear now that the writers did think that this whole Blaine-run system was madness, although we had to sit through a lot before getting here. Maybe the next twist will be a revelation that being a zombie is not necessarily a good thing after all.

Wtf with John Tracy's French accent btw?

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 03:42 (four years ago) link

Yeah, I meant ep 5.

Leaghaidh am br贸n an t-anam bochd (dowd), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 07:53 (four years ago) link

Revelation about Al in e6 was p disappointing.

one month passes...

So I guess that's that then. A good series on the whole, even if the last season was spotty.

We're on the UK schedule in Canada. I still haven't finished e12; wasn't getting that excited about this whole break-in story.
