A 2017 report funded by Google found that among 122 brands, teenagers found Vice to be the second-least cool, less than Yahoo, the Sunglass Hut, and JCPenney

oh man

Nothing's less cool than the try-too-hards.

lol @ google polling how uncool yahoo is

by all rights Vice should have an all-conquering, dumb-ass podcast network by now

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 11 June 2018 20:37 (five years ago) link

they don't have a bench of actual interesting personalities, nor do they really have enough depth on any specific topics

I mean, plenty of podcasts find success without either, but it ties back to the problem that their brand has no ethos. I mean, what's their hook, that they're edgy?

mh, Monday, 11 June 2018 20:45 (five years ago) link

the tagline on vice.com is VICE - Original reporting and documentaries on everything that matters in the world.

so they're CNN only they're, like, cool if you're 40 and a dude who used to do too much coke?

mh, Monday, 11 June 2018 20:47 (five years ago) link

someone get Desus & Mero a HBO contract or something

i liked the edgy vice of my youth, even though it's aged terribly those were quality LOLs that i cherish. the company's identity crisis is something to behold for sure and almost everything it does completely sucks but i think there is a potentially good version of vice out there that i like to imagine sometimes

flopson, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 00:29 (five years ago) link

I just looked up that Google report that put Vice at 2nd least cool among teens - it has YouTube at #1 on its cool graph? I knew YouTube was popular with the kids but I can't say I've ever thought of it as "cool." huh.

I have these “cool brand” booklets from the early 2000s that I’ll never junk because they’re such a bizarre artifact of marketing worship. came with some magazine. who picked them? why? it’s this peek into bizarre consumerist cachet

mh, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 01:35 (five years ago) link

I think this is their current day web presence http://www.coolbrands.uk.com/

Best thing on Vice now is nirvanna the band the show. Canadian buddy show set in Toronto - past mockunentary
Part Seinfeld show about nothing. A lot of the mock parts involve pedestrians unaware of what’s going on security staff have tried to thwart the guerilla aryle filming

sunburst N snowblind (Ross), Monday, 18 June 2018 04:57 (five years ago) link

That’s the sort of post that would ordinarily seem destined to echo out into the void without response but luckily I, also, am a Nirvanna The Band The Show fan.
Has there been any progress on s2 reaching non-Canadian audiences via legal channels? Why was there a separate Canadian version of Viceland in the first place?

Also, while I’m here, to maybe try my own hand at a sales pitch: it’s about a two-man band in Toronto who live together and don’t seem to rehearse much, but go to extreme lengths every episode to book a gig at real-life venue The Rivoli (trying seemingly everything, except, for some reason, just calling up the place to do it the normal way). The piano player obviously has 99% of the talent in the group but the vocalist is the ringleader with all the harebrained schemes.
Like Ross said it’s mostly shot in real places with real people, apart from scenes back at their house where they come up with the plots. It’s remarkably airtight considering that - they have a knack for getting exactly what they need out of non-actors, and in a way that keeps much of the potential discomfort firmly on themselves. Along with the show’s emphasis on making Toronto feel like Toronto, the impression they create is that two people in this perfectly ordinary city are living a hilarious sitcom life, and we just happen to have cameras trained on them while they fail to gel with their surroundings. It’s really a delight, and probably the reason I keep forgetting that Vice doesn’t actually do all that much else that I like.

When was there an issue? It has aired in Australia and is all available for legal streaming

kelp, clam and carrion (sic), Monday, 18 June 2018 08:44 (five years ago) link

Hmm. For the longest time it wasn’t available in America, at least. But you’re right, it seems to be on iTunes now.
Anyway I would strongly encourage even the Vice-averse to give it a shot.

My people

Also the creators rule. Responded to my email re enjoying the show right away. Anyone who grew up in the 90s and has found affection for n64, vhs and genuine throwbacks will dig it

We are going to start every week by re-reading this letter. We are going to remember our outrage at this moment and let it fuel our direction over the next four years. We are never going to let ourselves get complacent. We are never going to let the flames of resistance burn out.

in the sense that this announcement was widely, and rightly, ridiculed for rank hypocrisy, it's aged p goddamn well imo, including in light of recent allegations.

If the goal is to increase visibility and acceptance of non-binary ppl, why would they otherize them by demanding “Please credit The Gender Spectrum Collection in your captions” as opposed to just crediting Vice.

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 15 June 2020 15:38 (three years ago) link

Also, this doesn’t mean dogshit unless every one of these models was paid the same rate (or better) as a Getty/iStock model, and, of course there’s no mention of how they were compensated. Another slam dunk brought to you by Shane Smith and neo-liberalism

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 15 June 2020 15:39 (three years ago) link

Is this entirely their own thing or is it in partnership with Getty/iStock?

abolish stock photos imo

budo jeru, Monday, 15 June 2020 15:54 (three years ago) link

eh

stock photos are fine, wider representation in stock photos is fine

Where I'm puzzled re: the Vice project is that the Getty photos I looked at all seem to encompass the same range of experience as the Vice photos with the added benefit of most of them not looking like glossy staged model shots. It feels like they are trying to fill a niche that's already been filled and calling themselves trailblazers. (Obv that position comes with a grain of salt because my default position re: Vice is "fuck them, everything they do has a shitty ulterior motive")

right there in the third sentence too, really just had to hit that transphobic note immediately xp

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 15 June 2020 16:35 (three years ago) link

yeah no if yer curious there are ways to get around giving them traffic and still witnessing the horror but there's no part of that that should get c+p'd in here

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Monday, 15 June 2020 16:37 (three years ago) link

This is why I will forever dismiss the opinions of all the woke “they’re not like that anymore/that was before I got there” shitheads because this is literally what the brand WAS. Like not even in a “Henry Ford was an anti-Semite” way, because at least Henry Ford made cars. It’s like some neo-folk band going from full Nazi to “we sing about nature now.” Fuck off
