Mad River
Mad River (LP)
LABEL: SUNDAZED
GENRE: Psych | FORMAT: LP | CATALOG N. LP5243 | YEAR. (2018)
In Stock

180gram High Definition Vinyl, originally released in 1968 on Capitol; by far the most ominous-sounding of the Bay Area’s 1960s psychedelic bands, the music of Berkeley’s Mad River comes across like a spiralling, acid-spiked descent into hell. With a raw, garagey style marked by Lawrence Hammond’s quavering vocals and the interlocking exchanges of guitarists David Robinson and Rick Bockner, Mad River’s sound conjures a darker, more menacing version of Quicksilver Messenger Service or early Country Joe and The Fish. No wonder the quintet’s self-titled 1968 debut has long been at the top of many collector’s want lists! Presented in sealed & stickered picture sleeve).

(CREEM's ancient mention of this debut quoted lyrics, imploring "Merciful monks from your caves of ether" to do some stuff incl. "sweep the burning nostrils into the sea...and no one looks to me like they've come here," followed by a typesetter's note, "I can't go on this, stuff is too awful. Historian added that the second album went to an opposite extreme of mellow, even incl. a guest appearance by Richard Brautigan," and it's a classic of its kind too.")

I've loved this band and its later incarnation as mad River since I discovered them a few decades back. My teens coincided with the Ultimate Action coming out on Edsel which i got when i was like 14.
Now all of their material hopefully in best possible sound is coming out next October in one box set

https://www.cherryred.co.uk/product/the-action-shadows-reflections-the-complete-recordings-1964-1968-4cd-digibook/

Sixties Mod band THE ACTION only released six singles in their lifetime – or seven, if you count a pre-Action single by The Boys – but their legend has grown exponentially since their demise in 1968.

THE ACTION was the first band signed by Beatles producer George Martin after he left EMI to set up his own company AIR Productions. In due course, he produced the band’s five singles issued on Parlophone between 1965 and 1967 as well as tracks intended for a never-released album.

SHADOWS AND REFLECTIONS is far and away the most comprehensive tribute to THE ACTION so far assembled, boasting all their known recordings in the studio and live on radio/TV.

Many of the original Parlophone single mixes have never been reissued in their original form on compact disc – until now. The fresh discovery of multi-tracks and rehearsal tapes has led to a whole disc’s worth of previously unheard mixes and performances.

The box set includes numerous photos of THE ACTION in their heyday, with 16,000 words of sleeve-notes by David Wells and a 36-page booklet within a handsome 4-CD ‘digibook’.

Includes all previous material issued from the band’s BBC sessions and post-Parlophone period, suitably remastered by Alec Palao.

Mighty Baby not Mad river. Think I got that from the entry immediately above.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 16:29 (five years ago) link

Also should have just said taht there are a couple of tracks included there better known as recorded by Mighty Baby.

I think some members wound up in Habbibiya after going through the same Sufi conversion as Richard and Linda Thompson.

From a Pitchfork news item about the next reissue of Led Zeppelin's The Song Remains The Same:

Jimmy Page supervised the remastering process, according to Rolling Stone. The reissue will be available as a digital release, as well as on Blu-ray audio, CD, and vinyl. Additionally, the vinyl will include the entire nearly-30-minute rendition of “Dazed and Confused” on one side for the first time. A super deluxe edition is also available, and comes with two CDs, four 180-gram vinyl LPs, DVD audio of the entire album, two DVDs of the original film plus extras, a numbered art print of the album cover, a 20-page replica of the 1977 Japanese Cinema Programme, and more.

That bolded part seems...unwise. Also, "Dazed And Confused" always did take up one whole side - it's just that the reissued version is about two and a half minutes longer.

Drivin’ N Cryin’ are set to reissue their long out of print, 1997 eponymous album as Too Late To Turn Back Now on July 27th via New West Records. The record was produced by Kosmo Vinyl (associate to The Clash, The Jam, and Stiff Records) and features the Drivin’ N Cryin’ trio of founding members Kevn Kinney on vocals/guitar, Tim Nielsen on bass/mandolin, along with Jeff Sullivan on drums. The newly christened Too Late To Turn Back Now was remastered by Chris Griffin and features new, original artwork by Kosmo Vinyl which was assembled by Kosmo and longtime Drivin’ N Cryin’ tour poster artist Mike Sears. Available for the first time on vinyl, the album was pressed at Kindercore Vinyl in Athens, GA. Following their departure from Geffen Records, Drivin’ N Cryin’ returned to their hometown, independent roots. Of this time, longtime tour manager Scott Munn said, “The band was firing on all cylinders going into the studio, and there was a feeling that this was their truest representation and the record they had always wanted to make. Producer Kosmo Vinyl offered, “...I’d been around enough musicians, and in enough recording studios, to know what didn’t work. I wanted to make a record that sounded, and felt, like the Drivin’ N Cryin’ you would go see live. If I could do that, then I knew it would be good. All told, we spent about two weeks at Casino Studio, and I think we got what we wanted.” Upon its initial release, the album had success at radio with their cover of John Denver’s iconic “Leaving On A Jet Plane.” Relix Magazine has premiered the newly remastered lead off track “Keepin’ It Close To My Heart” which can be heard HERE. Too Late To Turn Back Now is available for pre-order now via NEW WEST RECORDS.

Drivin N Cryin’ frontman Kevn Kinney says of the album’s inception, “Too Late to Turn Back Now started out as a series of 45 rpm 7 inches. It was recorded in Clay Harper’s little Five Points studio and produced by Kosmo Vinyl. Kosmo had done a couple of Clay’s singles...production and artwork, and I asked him if he’d be interested in working with us for a 45? The first single was about Lenny Bruce! ‘Let Lenny B’ was a song from my early 80s punk band The Prosecutors. As well as the song Drivin N Cryin’. Kosmo IS real life rock and roll legacy. Not only his tenure with The Clash but his early days working at Stiff Records. I owned every Stiff 45 and would drive from Milwaukee to Chicago to get the newest ones! I was so honored to have his energy collaborating with us in this small, hot studio!! This is why I do this. This is who I am. Gone are the major labels. Gone are the tour buses. And the trappings of big empty studios and expenses. Well boys, it’s just us...None of those things have anything to do with making art. Well, one single turned to two and since we were already four songs in, let’s add a few more and make an album…’album’ refers to a collection of recorded music by the way. But it took 23 years to debut in all its vinyl glory!! We can’t thank everyone at New West Records enough for this. It sounds amazing. I toured Kindercore Vinyl last week and was blown away. I got my copy hot off the presses (literally) and I’ve played it every day. It’s too late to turn back now...I’m ready!”

Drivin’ N Cryin’ Too Late To Turn Back Now Track Listing:

1. Keepin’ It Close To My Heart
2. Roof Garden
3. I’ve Got A Message
4. Drivin’ N Cryin’
5. Around The Long Way
6. Let Lenny B
7. Paid In Full
8. Everything’s Gonna Be Alright
9. Beneath The Undertow
10. Passing Through
11. Leaving On A Jet Plane
12. Nothing To Lose

from Drag City News:

A CONVENTION OF COSMIC PROPORTIONS

In 1996, Masaki Batoh, who'd spent the previous decade recording, playing and living in a hippie communal environment with the heavy chamber folk outfit Ghost, formed a new unit to play in a different manner. He'd just finished making an incredible new Ghost album, Lama Rabi Rabi, but making music with Ghost was a spiritual endeavor; and for a change, Batoh wanted just to enjoy the playing of the kind of music that he and his musical friends had grown up with; the '70s sounds of British, American and Japanese rock.

Help Your Satori Mind is a result of things they just naturally jammed on during a couple of sessions! Along with Batoh were fellow Ghost members
Fuji on congos and Michio Kurihara (a modern psychedelic rock guitar god, previously in White Heaven, and eventually joining with Damon and Naomi). Also invited were notoriously crazy drummer virtuoso Futoshi Okano from Osaka's heavy rock trio, Subvert Blaze, bassist Chiyo Kamekawa from Yura Yura Teikoku and organist/pianist Jun Koto from Kakashi. Together, they were Cosmic Invention!

Originally, Help Your Satori Mind was released by The Now Sound, who'd previously issued two Batoh solo records, both of which became available on Drag City (as Collected Works), which folded not long after the Cosmic Invention release. The sound of Cosmic Invention was equal parts exploratory and explosive, accessing classical modes of psychedelic and progressive rock and roll music. It is the kind of item to be unearthed in a sarcophagus many years later - and at 20 years and counting, now is a good time! This marks Help Your Satori Mind's first appearance on LP, the vinyl giving new depth to their multi-hued, raw rock performances. It's the first appearance of the aptly-titled "Long Jamming", which wasn't included on the original release.

Get dancing to the free feeling and fathomless rock spirit of Cosmic Invention's Help Your Satori Mind, out August 17th!

Cosmic Invention album kinda close to the Sweet & Honey one in style but it has Kurihara and a better drummer so it's, y'know, better.

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 29 June 2018 12:38 (five years ago) link

Dunno about dollar bin but £/$5 would probably get most of them. I doubt you'd get the Richard Hell LP for cheap anyway, cheapest copy on discogs is $15.

I do still need the first B-52's and Flush The Fashion but not for $22, I think I'll wait for the five quid bin on those.

Vaguely interested in the Punk Nuggets 72-84 comp but I've probably got it all already by this point

Oneness Of Juju
Space Jungle Luv (1976)
BLACK FIRE

Amazing sought-after record from the brainchild of one J. Pluncky Branch and one of the greatest underground jazz groups. Space Jungle Luv goes on a slightly different tangent from African Rhythms (1975) heavy funk, to a more spiritual soul jazz (and soul vocals provided by Eke-Eta Jackie Lewis), technical playing, mixing fusion, funk and Coltrane's modal style - expanding styles. Check out "River Luvrite", "Space Jungle Funk", "Soul Love Now", but all the tracks are killer!

Oh, and here's one of the best I've heard this year---amazing how much he finds in songs I'd never cared about, like "Eleanor Rigby" and "Midnight Mover," and other selections are as good-to-great as hoped (except the Meters cover, which so far seems redundant, at a distance, although the Meters weren't there that night, so there and then I woulda said hey keep on killin it club band). Guitar, organ, drums=full orchestra here.

Dennis Coffey
One Night At Morey’s: 1968
Release date: June 8, 2018

Previously unissued live set from Detroit in 1968.
From his early work with ’50s/’60s hit makers The Royaltones (who also backed other artists like Del Shannon)—to his run through the Motor City’s independent labels as a session ace—to his pioneering and legendary work with The Funk Brothers, backing band to massive Motown hits like “Just My Imagination,” “Ball Of Confusion (That’s What The World Is Today),” “War,” “Cloud Nine,” “Someday We’ll Be Together” and “Band Of Gold” among many others—Dennis Coffey is a guitar legend.

The ’70s didn’t slow him down for one second as he struck out on his own and had a million selling hit with “Scorpio,” in 1971. He continued his studio session work (notably appearing on “Boogie Fever” by The Sylvers), scored films and produced other artists’ albums like Gallery’s Nice To Be With You and Rodriguez’ Cold Fact.

The 2000s have found Dennis appearing on the big screen including the 2002 film Standing In The Shadows Of Motown and the 2012’s Searching For Sugarman. And to this very day you can find him playing every Tuesday night in Detroit.

One Night At Morey’s: 1968 is drawn from the residency at Morey Baker’s Showplace Lounge in Detroit by the Lyman Woodard Trio. The trio consisted of Coffey on guitar, brilliant organist, Lyman Woodard, and drummer Melvin Davis, and could be found at Morey’s once a week. They played to a dedicated, often repeat, audience so the band kept the repertoire fresh and changing. One Night At Morey’s: 1968 follows last year’s Hot Coffey In The D: Burnin’ At Morey Baker’s Showplace Lounge released by Resonance Records, also drawn from the Morey’s residency, but with an entirely different track list.

All tracks on One Night At Morey’s: 1968 are previously unissued and come directly from the vaults of Dennis Coffey and producer partner, Mike Theodore. Tracks include original compositions, “Big City Lights,” “Mindbender,” and “Union Station,” as well as surprising and funky covers of “Billie’s Bounce” by Charlie Parker, “Burning Spear” by The Soul Strings, “Cissy Strut” by The Meters, “Eleanor Rigby” by The Beatles, “Groovin’” by The YoungRascals, and “I’m A Midnight Mover” by Wilson Pickett from the pen of both Pickett and Bobby Womack.

CD / DIGITAL TRACK LIST:

ELEANOR RIGBY
CISSY STRUT
GROOVIN’
BURNING SPEAR
IT’S YOUR THING/UNION STATION
MINDBENDER

man there are a lot of cool reissues

niels, Saturday, 30 June 2018 10:29 (five years ago) link

Still hoping that things getting reissued are coming outon cd though seems like so much stuff is just lp/dl.
Would still love physical copies of teh van Morison 70s catalogue. & the PSF stuff on cd.

Stevolende, Saturday, 30 June 2018 11:16 (five years ago) link

Judging by discogs, most of Van's 70s have come out on CD, I think, though some must be due for reremastering now. Would especially like to get discs of It's Too Late To Stop Now, Saint Dominic's Preview, and Into The Music. The 2-CD The Story of Them Featuring Van Morrison is incredible. The Bang Masters is a fun CD, being more what he had in mind for his early solo tracks (somewhat messed-with by the suits on first release).

dow, Saturday, 30 June 2018 23:11 (five years ago) link

All of Morrison's albums have been on CD at one time or another, it's just that a lot of them are OOP now, partially due to a couple stalled/slow moving reissue campaigns.

Making Plans For Sturgill (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 30 June 2018 23:53 (five years ago) link

I was thinking especially of the recent reissues of his material. I think everything came out as paid for downloads and i hoped that the individual lps might appear as cds.
It's Too Late To stop Now came out as a reissue of its original triple lp and also added another set with a couple of cds and a dvd of the Rainbow performance that I think is partially on the original lps. I missed the St Dominic's Preview from the 2006 reissue campaign which only appeared to be around for a short while anyway. Think I missed a couple of others too. & my Veedon Fleece from that time got a bit scratched because of it being mishandled.
So definitely looking for remasters of the 70s stuff, maybe Common one.

There was a recent reissue of the them material too adding a 3rd cd with BBC stuff on. I managed to pick that up in a sale somewhere. Astral Weeks & Band and Street choir were both reissued by whatever label had rights only to them out of the back catalogue.
Moondance got a several disc reissue a few years ago. I think Tupelo Honey came out too.

but it was mainly wondering if the physical counterparts to the digital downloads were going to happen.
& preferably on cd but is that format becoming defunct?

Check out the reissue of Mkwaju Ensemble's first album on WRWTFWW. I believe it's Midori Takada's first project, recommended if you're into Fourth Worldy percussion music with a few ambient tracks in there too

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of “Raindances”, a 2 CD anthology featuring every track from the four albums released by Gryphon on the Transatlantic label between 1973 and 1975.

One of the most original groups to emerge in the Progressive era, Gryphon came together at the instigation of Royal College of Music students Richard Harvey and Brian Gulland, initially as a vehicle to fuse traditional English music with Medieval and Renaissance music influences. Utilising various traditional instruments such as Crumhorns, Recorders, Bassoons and Mandolins, Gryphon expanded with the addition of Graeme Taylor on guitar and Dave Oberle on drums and percussion.
Singing to Transatlantic Records, Gryphon released their eponymous debut album in June 1973, adorned in a striking cover designed by Dan Pearce. The uniqueness of their musical style led to a commission to write a score for a stage production of The Tempest in 1974, parts of which formed the band’s next album, “Midnight Mushrumps”, released in April 1974. By this time bass guitarist Philip Nestor had joined the fold, and the band began to explore more progressive influences (with the album’s title track being an 18 minute opus).

The progressive rock influences became even more apparent on Gryphon’s acclaimed third album, “Red Queen to Gryphon Three”, released in December 1974. The album was one of the most successful of Gryphon’s career and the diversity of their music saw Gryphon earn the distinction of being the first artists to appear on all four BBC radio networks in one week. During this time Gryphon also toured as the support act to the legendary band YES, gaining new followers as a result. “Raindance” was Gryphon’s final album for Transatlantic Records. Issued in 1975, the record saw Philip Nestor replaced by Malcolm Bennett and was another successful record.

“Raindances” gathers together all the material from Gryphon’s four albums recorded for Transatlantic Records and has been newly re-mastered from the original master tapes. This anthology features an illustrated booklet with an essay by Malcolm Dome and includes exclusive interviews with Richard Harvey, Brian Gulland, Graeme Taylor and Dave Oberle.

ET SHOP BOYS ANNOUNCE FOURTH AND FINAL SET OF RELEASES IN
CATALOGUE: 1985-2012, THE LANDMARK SERIES OF REISSUES OF THEIR
PARLOPHONE STUDIO ALBUMS

The Albums Behaviour, Very And Bilingual Will Be Remastered And Reissued With 'Further
Listening' Albums Of Additional Bonus Material

Reissues Out August 31 From Rhino

LOS ANGELES - Pet Shop Boys will release the final set of albums in their definitive CATALOGUE: 1985-2012 series of reissues of all their Parlophone studio albums. This fourth batch of releases will see the PSB albums Behaviour from 1990, the 1993 album Very and the 1996 album Bilingual reissued on August 31. The albums have been remastered and repackaged, and will be accompanied by 'further listening' albums of master quality bonus tracks - including demos, extended mixes and remixes of tracks from the albums and others created in the same period as each record.

Behaviour was Pet Shop Boys' fourth studio album, recorded mostly in Munich, Germany at co-producer Harold Faltermeyer's studio. The album was then completed at London's Sarm West Studios, and was released in October 1990 - hitting number 2 on the UK Album Chart and going on to earn platinum certification in the UK.

The LP is seen by some as one of Pet Shop Boys' most contemplative and moving records, and features the singles "So Hard," 'How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously?' and their classic track "Being Boring." This catalogue release of Behaviour features 'further listening' bonus tracks such as an extended mix of "Where The Streets Have No Name (I Can't Take My Eyes Off You)" and an ambient mix of "Music For Boys" - both of which are previously unreleased on CD.

The 1993 album Very was a number one record for Pet Shop Boys in the UK, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland, and has to date sold in excess of five million copies worldwide. It contains 5 singles, including their cover of "Go West" - a number 2 hit for PSB - and lead single "Can You Forgive Her?"

Stylistically, Very could be said to serve as an antithesis to Behaviour, insofar as the production and lyrical themes are generally more upbeat and positive than those of the previous album. PSB also reinvented their image to incorporate more vivid colors and brightness, including Very's now-iconic "Lego" album cover. The album is also the first to be produced almost entirely by Pet Shop Boys themselves - with additional programming and production courtesy of Pete Gleadall and Stephen Hague. This CATALOGUE: 1985-2012 issue of Very includes a 'further listening' disc of bonus material, such as the previously-unreleased tracks "Falling" (a demo for Kylie Minogue), and a 1992 twelve-inch mix of "Go West."

Released in September 1996, Bilingual was the sixth studio album to be released by Pet Shop Boys. It was a UK top 5 record upon release and included 5 singles, all of which were UK Top 20 singles. As is often the case with PSB records, Bilingual comprises many influences, including those of the music of Latin America, due partly to the Spanish and Latin music Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe had been listening to prior to recording the album.

The album was recorded by PSB with Danny Tenaglia and Chris Porter, and has since gained platinum certification in Spain, and Gold in the UK. This CATALOGUE: 1985-2012 release of Bilingual includes a 'further listening' CD of bonus tracks, with previously-unreleased new versions of "Discoteca" and "A Red Letter Day."

The CATALOGUE: 1985-2012 reissues of Behaviour, Very and Bilingual will go on sale August 31. The three albums will be packaged with an extensive booklet in which Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe discuss each song, illustrated with many archive photographs. The entire project is designed by Farrow.

The CATALOGUE: 1985-2012 reissue series began last year with the release of Nightlife, Release, and Fundamental, followed by re-issues of Yes and Elysium and later Please, Actually, and Introspective.

The reissues of Please, Actually, Introspective, Behaviour, Very, and Bilingual were originally released with bonus 'further listening' albums in 2001 and are being newly remastered with their original track-listings for this project.

Arthur Russell
The World Of Arthur Russell
SOUL JAZZ RECORDS

New fully remastered re-release of Soul Jazz Records’ ‘The World of Arthur Russell’, the seminal collection of Arthur Russell’s essential music is being released on limited-edition heavy deluxe triple vinyl and deluxe CD edition.

This album brings together some of Russell’s best-loved and most accessible works including his wide-ranging music both solo and in groups including Dinosaur L (the essential ‘Go Bang’), Loose Joints (the equally classic ‘Is It All Over My Face’) as well as rarities such as the 7” only ‘Pop Your Funk’, Indian Ocean’s ‘Schoolbell/Treehouse’, Lola’s ‘Wax The Van’ and more.

Arthur Russell’s music effortlessly crossed musical boundaries making it timeless. His dance music credentials are faultless and this collection features mixes from Larry Levan, Françcois Kervorkian and Walter Gibbons. Similarly, his song-writing, musicality and performance skills are equally cherished as composer Philip Glass wrote, ‘this was a guy who could sit down with a cello and sing with it in a way that no one on earth has ever done before or will do again.’

When Soul Jazz Records’ The World of Arthur Russell first came out in 2003, Russell’s music had slipped into near obscurity. Nearly 15 years later there are over a dozen releases of his music, reissues of his original albums and more. ‘The World of Arthur Russell’ is the classic first collection of his work available once more.

“Arthur Russell fused the avant-garde with disco and sounds like nothing else on earth.” The GUARDIAN

“Russell is the great enigma of the New York music scene” THE WIRE

“Simply one of the best compilations of this or any year.” RECORD COLLECTOR

Yeah was glad to finally get a cd with GO Bang on it after having had it on 12" in the 80s, when that Souljazz Arthur Russell came out. Do love that song. There's some other great stuff on there too.

Numero stuff:

Step By Step: Time After Time b/w Now She’s Gone

45/Stream http://www.numerogroup.com/products/step-by-step-time-after-time-bw-now-shes-gone

Soaring falsetto lead from 13-year-old Johnnie Gee, who, alongside brothers Jerome and Dewitt and a handful of kids from their Milwaukee stomping grounds, formed Step By Step in 1969. Gee and company’s 1972 sweet soul double sider for Jim Kirchstein’s regional powerhouse Cuca Records is among the rarest singles produced by the Sauk City outfit over its 13-year run, barely making it outside of Wisconsin before appearing on 2007’s Home Schooled: The ABCs of Kid Soul album. Step By Step’s “Time After Time” has since become a highly sought after single on the low rider circuit, and was prominently featured in season two of Aziz Ansari’s breakout Netflix series Master of None. Both sides have been remastered from the original analog Cuca 1/4" tape, with two previously unreleased songs tacked onto the digital version.

Scientists: Weird Love

LP/Stream http://www.numerogroup.com/products/scientists-weird-love

Unhinged Aussie grunge captured just as the Scientists were imploding/attempting to explode. Recorded over three days in February 1986, Weird Love is the band’s last ditch effort to bring their bad vibes to bedrooms the world over, a colossal failure and brilliant mistake that sounds best when blasting out of a 1982 Corolla’s blown Alpine tweeters.

Teen Expo: The Cleopatra Label

2LP/CD/Stream http://www.numerogroup.com/products/teen-expo-the-cleopatra-label

From a basement in New Jersey, Tommy Falcone remade himself into a DIY Phil Spector. From 1962 to 1970, he founded and ran Cleopatra Records, discovered and mentored young Garden State talent, wrote songs and produced wild studio effects, and quit his day job to promote it all himself. Trained as an accordionist, Falcone had a whirlwind imagination and an omnivorous approach to genre, expressed through acts like the Centuries, the Tabbys, Johnny Silvio, the Inmates, Bernadette Carroll, the Hallmarks, Vickie & the Van Dykes, the Shandillons, Eugene Viscione, the Shoestring, and more. Cleopatra became a time-capsule of every 1960s pop style imaginable—garage rock, psychedelia, surf, girl groups, soul, novelties, exotica, even a crooner—a kaleidoscope of sound in search of the ever-elusive hit record.

We continue our work with the “Godfather Of Ethio Jazz”, Mulatu Astatke, with the first official reissues of his early classics ‘Afro Latin Soul’ Volumes 1 and 2 from 1966, recorded as The Ethiopian Quintet.

The albums were the first experiments in Astatke’s pioneering sound, fusing Ethiopian cultural music with Afro Latin and jazz forms. “I have always felt a deep connection between Latin and African music,” he explains. “I travelled to Cuba and listened to their musicians; the tempo, rhythm and feeling was very similar to different African forms.”

Astatke would start to perfect his Ethio jazz sound on his later album for Worthy in 1972, ‘Mulatu Of Ethiopia’ (STRUT129) but the two volumes of ‘Afro Latin Soul’ stand as important recordings documenting his early career.

‘Afro Latin Soul’ Volumes 1 and 2 come in their full original artwork and are painstakingly remastered by The Carvery. All formats feature personal liner notes by Mulatu Astatke.
