Police with their guns already drawn, confronted by several black men armed with: 1) a burning torch, 2) a set of brass knuckles, and 3) a stick, plus one unarmed black man, but the police are talking as if they are totally about to die? Weirdly realistic.

imo, rightwing cartoons that are full-on alt-right/4-chan neo-nazi like this guy are not really 'batshit', I think to qualify as batshit the cartoon has to be inadvertently giving away more than the cartoonist intended? (Ben Garrison uses alt-right tropes but doesn't really understand them because he's a clueless boomer and is therefore batshit)
― soref, Monday, 18 June 2018 07:02 (five years ago) link
yeah that's not batshit, that's just repellent

half the comments under the tweet are people trying to figure out whether it's a legit garrison-esque cartoon, or an attempt to parody garrison and company.

it took at least half a century for the cartoon trope of the bomb-throwing anarchist to die.

I had a look at the cartoonist's twitter feed, and I still can't quite work out what his angle is tbh - https://twitter.com/mackaycartoons/media
(it doesn't help that most of his cartoons are about Canadian politics, about which I know next to nothing).
He doesn't seem particularly right-wing, or particularly 'political' at all for a political cartoonist (which is maybe why the cartoon is confusing, it's what happens when an "I make fun of idiots on the left AND the right" guy tries to tackle this subject?)
― soref, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 18:24 (five years ago) link
from his Canadian political cartoons he seems left-leaning (seems both anti-Doug Ford and anti-Justin Trudeau), but also seems to think supporting the more left-leaning NDP is mostly a lost cause. So a pretty typical left of center Canadian basically.
This doesn't really get me much closer to guessing what he's going for with the above cartoon. It doesn't quite work as parody imo.

iirc, Garrison's origin story is that he first came to prominence when 4chan started trolling him by doctoring his loopy conspiracy theorist cartoons so they were explicitly about jews and white nationalism, he spent years trying to stop them, then eventually when the alt-right became a thing ppl like Milo and the Gorilla Mindset guy tapped him to do pictures for them because of the ironic appreciation of his art by their fans? He seems like the he probably would have ended up on the Trump-train regardless

That 'meltdown' one is just another unimaginative iteration of 'let us drink these delicious libtears'. I suspect this is because Ben couldn't figure out how to make the incarceration of toddlers appear as a bold new level of achievement.
