btw I kind of wonder how this didn't wind up in Trainspotting 2, it almost feels like it should've been to that what Born Slippy was to the original

am i the only person who has listened to second toughest in the infants 4 millions times but never really listened to anything else by underworld? its just so perfect to me and i never felt like i needed more.

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 14:11 (five years ago) link

Iā€™m so sick of Iggy Pop after he ruined that song on the last New Order record. Get one new idea guys please. Send him a card to tell him you used to listen to The Idiot.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 14:47 (five years ago) link

haha, iggy was on a new order song? hahahaha! oh brother. i don't think i've ever heard any 21st century new order and i'm gonna keep it that way.

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 15:05 (five years ago) link

that album was p good but also no one really needed it

I love the albums either side of it but they don't quite do the same thing for me. Wait does this mean you've never heard Born Slippy?

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 15:08 (five years ago) link

i've heard it. and i've heard dubnobass and i actually bought beaucoup fish when it came out but i never played it much and dubnobass just seemed like a not as amazing infants when i heard it. but that's just me! but i SERIOUSLY love infants. i've played it year in and year out since it was released.

Scott, you're not alone! I bothered with Dubnobass and Beaucoup Fish, but they didn't take. Second Toughest is all I need. And I bought this 2cd when it came out, which does have Born Slippy. And Rez, man. Rez.

idk how y'all can live without "dirty epic" but more power to you

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 15:58 (five years ago) link

the only underworld i need is second toughest. and beaucoup fish. and dubnobass. and the tokyo set. and prob two cd-rs of remixes (one of their own work and one of others). and the everything everything dvd. and

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 16:02 (five years ago) link

dubnobass changed my life though, it was the first dance music i ever heard that wasn't, say, la bouche (also great)

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 16:03 (five years ago) link

La bouche! <3
??
I know 'Dirty Epic', so I'm not living without it. I just don't ever need to hear it again?

I did listen to the Eno/Hyde stuff, if that counts. But only because Eno. And it was disappointing.

A life without Faxed Invitation, Peach Tree, Trim, Best Mamgu Ever, Oich Oich, 8 Ball, Thing In A Book, and River of Bass is a life not worth living.

Oblivion and Barbara have been my go-tos this year. post-BF Underworld is really slept on

Possibly uncool but I adore this:

djh, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 18:34 (five years ago) link

Louisiana is a great song! It's uncool to not like it. See also the UW remix of William's Last Words by Manic Street Preachers, which for me captures a similarly reflective / somber tone.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 18:38 (five years ago) link

btw I think I say this every year in this thread but the UW release with a title that starts with "I'm a Big Sister" is an incredibly brilliant ambient EP (it's about 30 minutes long) that I think stacks up with any classic UW deep cut you could name

I wanna complain it's overlooked but they just released it on their own webstore and I think you can't get it anymore, so it's sort of their own fault

wish they'd just open up a Bandcamp already

frogbs, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 22:08 (five years ago) link

otm about i'm a big sister, it's one of the best things they've ever done

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 23:22 (five years ago) link

^^^ Who is that voice doing the I'm a Big Sister thing, by the way? it sounds like Simon Armitage.

Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 23:56 (five years ago) link

I think I've finally figured out why I'm not a big underworld fan, since i think the new track with iggy pop is fucking great till karl hyde opens his mouth.

lana del boy (ledge), Sunday, 3 June 2018 15:48 (five years ago) link

finally listening to the iggy pop track, it's... wonderful??? pop just kinda sounds like a sample

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 June 2018 15:54 (five years ago) link

wow, this goes hard. sounds like they've turned back the clock about 20 years

good driving in the car music, just kind of half-listen to iggy's old manisms and nod your head to the music

mh, Tuesday, 31 July 2018 14:00 (five years ago) link

that p4k review seems to miss the point. It didn't come across to me that you're supposed to like...identify with Iggy here

frogbs, Tuesday, 31 July 2018 14:10 (five years ago) link

I enjoyed this more than I would have expected. Didn't really care much for most recent Underworld, did kind of enjoy that Iggy Pop album from a couple of years ago.

It's fun to listen to Iggy Pop talk, what he actually says doesn't really matter that much. The straightforward beats on this complement his voice very nicely.

Regarding that pitchfork review: I guess Underworld and Iggy Pop could have gone for something for "significant" or "important" with this (which sometimes feels like the only way for someone older like Iggy Pop to be reviewed positively) but I really liked the tossed off feel of this.

silverfish, Tuesday, 31 July 2018 17:17 (five years ago) link

yeah it feels very tossed off but that's the charm imo!

the masseduction of lauryn hill (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 31 July 2018 20:34 (five years ago) link

like sure, it's a 4.7, fine, but that's not the point

the masseduction of lauryn hill (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 31 July 2018 20:34 (five years ago) link

for some reason I pictured Iggy as having less old rockstar-isms, but the way he delivers them makes some tracks seem like hymns of resignation

mh, Tuesday, 31 July 2018 20:54 (five years ago) link

I actually kind of love this. UW sound ageless here, you can tell right away who you're listening to with those chord changes and driving beats. meanwhile while Iggy sounds like he's 150 years old. don't mind the vocals much though they do kind of ruin "I'll See Big", which would be cool to have in instrumental form. but he's mostly good. "Get Your Shirt" been in my head all week.

frogbs, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 15:39 (five years ago) link

btw Iggy sounding a bit like David Liebe Hart these days

new track, it's an odd little thing, what are they up to?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qDwIDPNdE0

frogbs, Thursday, 1 November 2018 14:30 (five years ago) link

They're up to some interesting stuff on paper, but this song is complete shite. Karl's vocals are awful, as they have been lately. Rick needs to edit him more aggressively. The music is also laughably retro / trying to recapture what made them special in 1996, but ends up sounding like a parody / weak version of UW circa 95/96. I just want to hear Rick make ambient albums and let Karl go do paintings. His painting is miles better than his lyrics at this stage in his career.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 1 November 2018 17:48 (five years ago) link

where did you hear these vicious things? There are always these rumours about them shagging off. Around the London olympics there was this noise about "Underworld" continuing as some loose collective of artists.

I love this track. A relief after that Iggy EP. Like most of their short edits (this is "Another Silent Way (Film Edit)", it feels a bit rushed. Looking forward to the full thing.

groovypanda, Friday, 9 November 2018 09:21 (five years ago) link

yeah I've liked 'em both

hope this leads to a new album, or at least a tangible collection of all these tracks. 10 years ago they used to sell these little bundles of tracks on their webshop and there were a lot of gems ("Phonestrap", "Swing Up High", etc.)...hopefully this is something like that?
