i think they said the previous two albums were an attempt at going back-to-basics after Bloom was bigger-sounding

ufo, Monday, 28 May 2018 16:51 (five years ago) link

and yet DC has some incredibly 'big' moments imo, like that devastating guitar during 'Beyond Love's' extended fade-in, and the massive outro of 'PPP.'

I absolutely love '7,' esp. its continuation of DC/TYLS's trend of gorgeous fade-ins (Drunk in LA and Black Car) and fade-outs (L'Inconnue and Lose Your Smile). But I still think Depression Cherry has some of the band's best synth and esp. guitar work, and so I see DC more as a progression towards '7' than a retread.

dc is their second best album

beyond love is SO good man.

requested that on their setlist request website and they played it - that song kills me

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 22:47 (five years ago) link

i like how 7 seems to be an antidote to depression cherry - "depressed and impressed" - there's a more valedictory approach to depression on 7, it's not that the sadness has went away it's just that it's managed

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 22:48 (five years ago) link

yeah ‘Beyond Love’ will forever be my fav! I think it’s DC’s thesis statement.

sad that it isn’t regularly played in their sets, yet 10 Mile Stereo STILL is...wouldn’t mind some other Teen Dream tracks instead!

KevRus, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 00:03 (five years ago) link

Feel like beyond love captures depression perfectly. What a song

California scheming (Ross), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 00:27 (five years ago) link

Kinda feel dc and stars were just dry runs for this new record. They sound like demo albums in comparison to 7

DC was more glum and introspective, to me it felt like a calculated retreat from the more full on "Bloom". But TYLS definitely comes off like a dry run for "7", like they wanted to go back to making pop songs again but weren't sure how it should eventually sound.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 11:04 (five years ago) link

absolutely !

Good track. Was just jamming out to some Depression Cherry over here, got a vinyl copy for father's day. Hope I can score a copy of 7 soon.

this album is so good. i really hope to get into their sold out show in early August at the Hollywood Cemetery.

Ross, are you my main man?

Bee OK, Thursday, 28 June 2018 03:39 (five years ago) link

Just listened to this yet again.

Am seriously pondering buying $70 scalped tickets for their upcoming show in Austin.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 28 June 2018 03:41 (five years ago) link

Old news no doubt, but I was so pleased to learn from that AMA that Kendrick Lamar's "Money Trees" is built on a sample from "Silver Soul":

one month passes...

anyone in Los Angeles going to the gig tonight or tomorrow night?

i'm so trying to get into this show but can't get tickets. frustrated1

Bee OK, Saturday, 4 August 2018 01:53 (five years ago) link

they are going on stage in about an hour and i'm not there! truth be told, Saturday Night would be so much better.

Bee OK, Saturday, 4 August 2018 01:55 (five years ago) link

did you see them live before? how are they?

niels, Saturday, 4 August 2018 08:37 (five years ago) link

i have not seen them live.

Bee OK, Saturday, 4 August 2018 19:53 (five years ago) link

for those in and around Los Angeles, they just released some tickets for tonight's show on-line.

Bee OK, Saturday, 4 August 2018 19:54 (five years ago) link

niels - they are amazing live!

saw them on DC-TYLS tour. Highlights were anything from Bloom, beyond love and elegy to the void wherein victoria and the dude ripped the solos together! i think victoria was doing the feedback. they also played a special show for 100 a pop or so at an art gallery and played the majority of the last two records primarily to an audience in close proximity. I would see them every time they tour

Ross, Tuesday, 7 August 2018 16:20 (five years ago) link

good stuff, may catch them in october

niels, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 07:07 (five years ago) link

I saw them on the Bloom tour, great show, the band sounded ace and the set design was very cool as well. Unfortunately they had to cut the set short because of an approaching thunderstorm, so I didn't get to hear the finale of "10 Mile Stereo">"Irene".

ˈʌglɪɪst preɪ, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 10:45 (five years ago) link

i see them every time they play dublin and am seeing them again in october. absolutely wonderful live band.

in twelve parts (lamonti), Thursday, 9 August 2018 07:43 (five years ago) link

caught their first of two shows in Oakland.

wow. it’s so incredible how an ‘indie-darling’ bedroom pop duo has managed to catapult itself into a shoegaze rock stratosphere.

they are such a LOUD and tight live act!

KevRus, Thursday, 9 August 2018 18:34 (five years ago) link

Saw them a few years back at the Fillmore and it was a massive, impeccable, and gorgeous set. Think it lasted more than 2 hours and it was simply amazing. I bet they're even better now and wish I could have found tickets

octobeard, Thursday, 9 August 2018 20:30 (five years ago) link

How are people feeling about 7 now that it’s been out for a bit?

Karl Malone, Thursday, 9 August 2018 20:35 (five years ago) link

Been actively avoiding listening to it lately cause don't wanna play it out

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 9 August 2018 20:49 (five years ago) link

It sold out the first time around so it has finally arrived at my home on vinyl. Will be playing it tonight for the first time in weeks.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 9 August 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

Karl - 7 is their best record !!!

Ross, Friday, 10 August 2018 02:39 (five years ago) link

honestly 7 perfectly honed in on the best parts of DC and TYLS and brought them wide-screen - their best since Bloom

dj screwed (Ross), Friday, 10 August 2018 18:15 (five years ago) link

Update: this sounds amazing on vinyl.

Even songs like “lose your smile” which didn’t really catch my attention the first time around has won me. Woo and Drunk in LA sound warmer?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 11 August 2018 00:59 (five years ago) link

I think they’re a singles band

calstars, Saturday, 11 August 2018 01:46 (five years ago) link

i feel empty inside because i assumed it would be a grower for me but it doesn't seem to be growing. however, i initially felt the same about depresso cherry and thank your lucky starz, and then after revisiting them long after release i eventually grew to love them. so maybe i'll just wait a year or two.

Karl Malone, Saturday, 11 August 2018 01:51 (five years ago) link

It's the same ebb and flow for me and Beach House were I will intensely love an album for a short period of time, not care about it for several months, see years, and go back it and love it even more.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 11 August 2018 01:57 (five years ago) link

Sparks was so good when it came out ; DC didn’t get any better than that

calstars, Saturday, 11 August 2018 01:58 (five years ago) link

levitation is probably the best dream pop song of all time so it does get a bit better

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Saturday, 11 August 2018 03:02 (five years ago) link

They’re neither a singles or an album band. They work in small doses.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 11 August 2018 07:38 (five years ago) link

lol what!

Dunno I love all their records and listened to 7 religiously. Sure sometimes a break is needed but this is an albums babs
