"letting go" also rocks

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Saturday, 19 May 2018 22:10 (five years ago) link

that's long been one of my favorite solo Macca favorites -- and a total bomb on the charts.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 19 May 2018 22:15 (five years ago) link

yesssss to magneto

The Speedway medley --- I want to say I read that the original idea, when this was a double album, was that each of the first three bits would have been sprinkled around the different sides, so that when they start appearing in "Power Cut" it's this awesome payoff. Or maybe I just imagined that, but it makes a *little* more sense than just unrolling these fairly trifling songs one after the other as your closer. Ambition exceeding his grasp - I still like it, but if each section was really convincing as a song in itself, it could have been spectacular.

Fan of “Love in Song” if we are talking Venus and Mars.

timellison, Saturday, 19 May 2018 22:56 (five years ago) link

I love 'Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five', particularly the way it builds up to that ending!

'Magneto', 'Letting Go' and 'Love In Song' all favourites of mine, but then I rate Venus and Mars quite highly in general. I get 'Medicine Jar' stuck in my head quite a fair bit too, and McCartney didn't write that one!

A few other McCartney songs that deserve shout outs:

No Words
Tomorrow
She's My Baby (I might be alone in my appreciation of this one)
Jenny Wren
Junk

i love "She's My Baby," "mopping her up" and all. That's a real pop-into-my-head-at-the-grocery-store tune.

No Words

ok so: i started constructing a ballot i may never complete, but this is currently my no. 1

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 20 May 2018 00:36 (five years ago) link

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 20 May 2018 00:38 (five years ago) link

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 20 May 2018 14:46 (five years ago) link

On paper the idea of a slide solo bores me

you have never listened to classic country i take it?

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 20 May 2018 14:48 (five years ago) link

No, I never listen to any country music.

I am so loving BN's deep Wings dive, and that it keeps paying out dividends.

Yup, me too!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Sunday, 20 May 2018 15:36 (five years ago) link

Back to the Egg in general has become a huge favourite of mine, and it sucks that there weren't more albums with that line-up.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Sunday, 20 May 2018 15:37 (five years ago) link

I've always kind of liked this Ringo song. Roger Manning and Andy Sturmer from Jellyfish are on it. He covers a Posies track on the same album.

^^ by far his most listenable album after 1974.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 20 May 2018 16:37 (five years ago) link

Giving Wings at the Speed of Sound another listen today... definitely one of the patchier Wings albums for a couple of reasons (side two can fuck off entirely apart from 'Silly Love Songs' and 'Warm and Beautiful') but I forgot how much I love 'The Note You Never Wrote' ...

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Sunday, 20 May 2018 19:42 (five years ago) link

I wish there was a 12" instrumental of Paul McCartney's 'Temporary Secretary'

Non-Macca Speed of Sound jam "Wino Junko" is one of my favorite dumb Wings songs.

omigod why haven't I paid attention to Red Rose Speedway's "When the Night"???

4 ballots in already! Off to a good start

Οὖτις, Monday, 21 May 2018 16:51 (five years ago) link

against my better judgment i'm making one

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 21 May 2018 16:52 (five years ago) link

just curious, did the ballots make it to 100?

i'd like to list 100 songs, but i want to genuinely like every song on my list, and i'm not sure that's possible

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Monday, 21 May 2018 16:53 (five years ago) link

100 song ballot really useful for when i inevitably put every non-apple jam all things must pass song on my ballot

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 21 May 2018 16:53 (five years ago) link

I have 2 100 song ballots so far

Οὖτις, Monday, 21 May 2018 17:01 (five years ago) link

That was me – I listed "Blow Away" 99 times.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 21 May 2018 17:08 (five years ago) link

correction - one of those ballots was actually only 99 tracks cuz voter voted for one song twice

Οὖτις, Monday, 21 May 2018 17:33 (five years ago) link

nice try, voter ;)

Οὖτις, Monday, 21 May 2018 19:33 (five years ago) link

I'm up to 40 songs on my ballot of stuff I unreservedly love.

next I guess I'll add some Paul songs

Οὖτις, Monday, 21 May 2018 19:33 (five years ago) link

i absolutely adore the "Give Peace a Chance" b-side "Remember Love". this should have been on the White Album.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 21 May 2018 20:13 (five years ago) link

never a bad idea. "my brave face" and "put it there" are locks for my ballot, and maybe "we got married," "this one," "that day is done," and one of the bonus tracks. if it was an all-macca poll, two of the bonus tracks. great material in that period. we've just recently had it out over the production so need to really rehash but i, personally, wish all those songs had gotten a more "rootsy"/"natural" sound - if nothing else i think they'd be much better-known and better-liked. OTOH i like that he wasn't content to say "okay, i'm forty, it's time to settle down and just make classic 'beatle sound' albums with george martin from now on."

but i also feel like mccartney himself hasn't ever really owned how good these songs are. he seems really content in interviews and clips to talk about the stuff where there was clearly a positive critical/commercial consensus, "oh yeah, i thought, a band on the run, hmm, now THAT's interesting..." and rarely comes out and says "man i'm really proud of 'flowers,' i wrote some great songs for that, "this one" came to me like a flash of lightning at 3 AM and i hope people getting into my music check that one out" or whatever. he has anecdotes for the famous songs and he never talks about this album or 'back to the egg' or whatever. whereas someone like john or george i think had no problem hyping up whatever they thought was really good (and, often unfairly, slagging off stuff they were momentarily down on).
