This is that shit

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Saturday, 19 May 2018 17:54 (five years ago) link

Woo,
Girl of the year and lose your smile are three of my top 10 beach house now

Ross, Saturday, 19 May 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link

I haven't heard a Beach House album since the first three, diving into 7 now.

I've spent a week trying to fall in love with this record, it's just not happening. Apart from Black Car there's nothing I get a thrill of excitement from. And I am a huge fan, devoured and savoured every album rapturously since Devotion.

startled macropod (MatthewK), Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:03 (five years ago) link

Xpost to Matthew - that’s ok bud

Ross, Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:14 (five years ago) link

Glad I’m not the only one

calstars, Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:19 (five years ago) link

It's pleasant enough. Might be a grower.

this is really good though it also feels like they've drifted far enough into shoegaze territory that their sound is less distinct compared to e.g. slowdive or cocteau twins

ciderpress, Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:33 (five years ago) link

Maybe it'll click. Love the Cocteaus, Spacemen 3 etc etc.

startled macropod (MatthewK), Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:48 (five years ago) link

What I like about this is how the abstraction of their lyrics match music that supports that ambiguity

Ross, Sunday, 20 May 2018 00:06 (five years ago) link

I think it still feels distinct compared to the dream-pop canon of Slowdive, Cocteau Twins etc. as despite the added distortion this time around they're still much more synth/organ heavy than either of those bands ever were

ufo, Sunday, 20 May 2018 03:57 (five years ago) link

Before this, the most time I'd ever spent with a Beach House release was the 7" version of "Used to Be" a decade ago. Always gave the albums a once over and then moved on. This one grabs me in a way the band never had.

girl of the year rules

I'm starting to thaw y'all

startled macropod (MatthewK), Monday, 21 May 2018 11:00 (five years ago) link

i'll need to listen to this more, i love this band so much but apart from devotion and depression cherry most of their records didn't open up for me immediately

marcos, Monday, 21 May 2018 13:51 (five years ago) link

I feel total trust in the universe knowing a song like L’’Iconnue came out of it

Music is confidence (Ross), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 04:07 (five years ago) link

The counting to seven in French bit is wonderful.

in twelve parts (lamonti), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 06:07 (five years ago) link

Couple sonic details I like

The metallic hi hat in the right channel on dark spring

The slide effect near the outro of l’iconnue which I’m
convinced is an organ fed through a pitch shifter effect

don piano (Ross), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 19:00 (five years ago) link

On tour so don't slouch!

add surface noise (Ross), Thursday, 24 May 2018 19:56 (five years ago) link

Lose your smile woo and girl of the year are a perfect trilogy. Walking in sun to this and felt like I could do anything

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 00:01 (five years ago) link

I love this album so much. I was obsessed with Teen Dream and Bloom, then I kind of lost interest around Depression Cherry and Thank Your Lucky Stars (don't know why!) and skipped that era, but now I'm back on board. I need to revisit those two previous records as well.

ˈʌglɪɪst preɪ, Monday, 28 May 2018 10:27 (five years ago) link

Kinda feel dc and stars were just dry runs for this new record. They sound like demo albums in comparison to 7

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 15:02 (five years ago) link

I love those records but 7 excels in every way at pushing that sound forward

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 15:03 (five years ago) link

yeah otm

ciderpress, Monday, 28 May 2018 15:20 (five years ago) link

One of my fav moments is the voice going “yes!” In woo after Victoria says “I won’t give up”

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 16:29 (five years ago) link

i think they said the previous two albums were an attempt at going back-to-basics after Bloom was bigger-sounding

ufo, Monday, 28 May 2018 16:51 (five years ago) link

and yet DC has some incredibly 'big' moments imo, like that devastating guitar during 'Beyond Love's' extended fade-in, and the massive outro of 'PPP.'

I absolutely love '7,' esp. its continuation of DC/TYLS's trend of gorgeous fade-ins (Drunk in LA and Black Car) and fade-outs (L'Inconnue and Lose Your Smile). But I still think Depression Cherry has some of the band's best synth and esp. guitar work, and so I see DC more as a progression towards '7' than a retread.

dc is their second best album

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Monday, 28 May 2018 21:50 (five years ago) link

beyond love is SO good man.

requested that on their setlist request website and they played it - that song kills me

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 22:47 (five years ago) link

i like how 7 seems to be an antidote to depression cherry - "depressed and impressed" - there's a more valedictory approach to depression on 7, it's not that the sadness has went away it's just that it's managed

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 22:48 (five years ago) link

yeah ‘Beyond Love’ will forever be my fav! I think it’s DC’s thesis statement.

sad that it isn’t regularly played in their sets, yet 10 Mile Stereo STILL is...wouldn’t mind some other Teen Dream tracks instead!

KevRus, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 00:03 (five years ago) link

Feel like beyond love captures depression perfectly. What a song

California scheming (Ross), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 00:27 (five years ago) link

Kinda feel dc and stars were just dry runs for this new record. They sound like demo albums in comparison to 7

DC was more glum and introspective, to me it felt like a calculated retreat from the more full on "Bloom". But TYLS definitely comes off like a dry run for "7", like they wanted to go back to making pop songs again but weren't sure how it should eventually sound.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 11:04 (five years ago) link

absolutely !

Good track. Was just jamming out to some Depression Cherry over here, got a vinyl copy for father's day. Hope I can score a copy of 7 soon.

Ross, are you my main man?

Bee OK, Thursday, 28 June 2018 03:39 (five years ago) link

Just listened to this yet again.

Am seriously pondering buying $70 scalped tickets for their upcoming show in Austin.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 28 June 2018 03:41 (five years ago) link

Old news no doubt, but I was so pleased to learn from that AMA that Kendrick Lamar's "Money Trees" is built on a sample from "Silver Soul":
