Not sure if I'm going to be in either LA or NYC for the MBV shows, but it'll be one of them. MBV outdoors at FYF 2013 was a full-out earthquake tumult. The PA power blew out towards the end of YMMR but the onstage sound was so wide that it didn't really matter. Kids were crowdsurfing, dancing, LA shoe gazers totally amped.

Going to see them at the shrine next month but thankful I got to see them at a venue 1/10th the size a couple years ago.

New song sounds fairly indistinct, but then trying to actually record an MBV gig on your phone... Fairly hopeful this thing will come out in the next month or two though, if the roll-out's anything like the self-titled.

Was looking at seeing the Philly show at the end of the month but two tickets with fees come to over $180 which is just insane. I saw them in 2013 and paid just over $100 for a pair of tickets. I can't justify spending that much so I'm not going. :(

seeing them on Sunday, can't wait. in Los Angeles the ticket were about $60 each, wow at that rip off price.

i paid $100 each for Nine Inch Nails and the Jesus and Mary Chain residency show in Hollywood and felt like that was too much for a general admission show.

anyone here seem them this tour, do they provide ear plugs?

Oh, that explains it, Philly is sold out and the TM site automatically shows you reseller seats which I did not know until just now when I told it not to do that.

Short tour. No DC this time. Old guy me saw em in DC way back when at the old 200 people capacity 930 Club. Loudest show I have ever been to.

how loud are they now? obv will wear earplugs but I've heard horror stories about it and have to be sensitive to my ears

i saw them in denver in 2013 and it was your standard ‘p loud’ show, then at roy wilkins that year which has a much more powerful sound system which made it like a full body experience, it like made my back hurt because i was so tense. (i was also extremely high) i think you’ll be fine tho. they sort of just, as mentioned, dial in the sound and slowly turn it up... i honestly think mogwai was louder

i’m not sure how powerful the sound system is at the palace, i actually liked slowdive at the fine line versus the palace haha

that’s a minneapolis hot take and i’m all for it. i think the show is designed for earplugs really, only gig i’ve been to where there were dozens of signs mentioning ‘EXTREME VOLUME’ and to use earplugs

MBV is all about ringing trebles and those sounds are blocked by earplugs. I also thought the sound was muddled but assumed the problem was the plugs. I'm not great with extreme noise and had better results going all the way to the back of the room to let them off a bit, but that's a terrible place to watch a show.

Cool to see them in person though.

When I saw them 10 years ago (and stupidly didn't wear ear plugs) I thought the sound was very muddled. The vocals were almost non-existent and some tunes were such a sludge of noise that it could take up to a minute to work out what you were listening to.

Best concert yet using my custom ear plugs with the -15dB filters (definitely heard all the highs). Yet the cacophony at the end was almost too loud with them IN. Damn. This was at the Fox btw. And yes the mix for the first few songs was crap.

Hahaha. I have never worn earplugs to a show before but had been thinking that maybe I should for this one and this thread has pretty much cemented that decision for me.

I saw them many moons ago at the Santa Monica Performing Arts Center and it was a totally different experience. Assume it was because the venue was like 1/4th the size. I didn't feel as bad about leaving early bc I had that in my back pocket but my wife was pretty pissed.

yeah the sound, the size of the venue and ear plugs basically reduced everything to a dull monotone roar and she's short and couldn't see anything

it looks like their setlists have been pretty consistent on this tour.

i'm seeing them for the first time later this week! and i for one am PUMPED about this consistent setlist - for someone like me it is maybe the perfect combo of old songs that i must hear (what you want, soon, when you sleep), my favorite non-album tracks (honey power, thorn, cigarette), material off m b v, and new NEW material. maybe the only thing i'd change is that i'd reaaaaaaally like to hear "(when you wake) you're still in a dream". on some days that's my favorite mbv song, period.

i have to admit that i kind of wish that for just one song (feed me with your kiss) i was going alone. i would say "I have been known to lose my shit during this song" but i would be lying, because no one else has ever witnessed the intensity of me air-listening to that song, alone. but in any sort of company i am usually able to contain myself. still, i am very much looking forward to hearing all of this at such an incredible volume, and if the sound is a bit muddy, i'll just fill in the rest of the sonic details in my miiiind

my review:

there were some personal issues leading up to this show, so i missed a couple of songs. i assumed they would be handing out ear plugs but we were so late that we just wanted to buy a beer and get out there. it was a general admission show and the place was just packed, felt overcrowded. they didn't like where we were standing and told us we had to move in. this is where i lost my three friends, we pushed our way in at the front of the stage. i had a moment where i felt like they rolled up their sleeves and said you are in for a legendary band and we are here to rock you, don't feel that way at most shows but they know there is no-one else out there like them. there was no air on in the place so everyone was just sweating buckets. i was having a great time swaying to the music but it felt like it was getting louder and louder. i stopped moving and plugged my ears, a few moments later someone gave me ear plugs and that was the greatest gesture i have ever got at a live show. though i only was able to plug my ears for about four or five songs i needed it. i think they were slowly turning up the sound as the concert went on. one of my friends said that Kevin had 20 different amps on stage with him. the whole band looked old, Kevin is going bald and gray. Colin, the drummer, is also gray and Debbie looked good with her short hair cut. Bilinda looked young from where i standing and didn't seem to age at all. i know that was not the case but she looked good. overall it was a good show, not my favorite but so happy i got to see them again for the first time since the Loveless tour.
