Although I do wish that Nigerian woman star Afropop singer Yemi Alade could have gotten 1 big interview when she toured the US last year.

poor woman is 18 (19?) and already has msg boarders saying "not bad but she'll never make another song as good as this other one". cool world.
― alpine static, Friday, 8 June 2018 06:10 (five years ago) link
You are right. She is a genius and everything she does (and will do) is perfect. No other opinion is allowed because we don't wanna hurt that innocent soul who chose to be in the public eye.
― nostormo, Friday, 8 June 2018 06:22 (five years ago) link
yes, that's exactly what I said
― alpine static, Friday, 8 June 2018 07:15 (five years ago) link
i mean, i'm sorry if you took that as a personal insult, nostormo, but the truth is i accurately represented what you said.
and i think it's a bummer to declare that she has already written and recorded her best song at age 18 based off a track or two from her new album...
if that's who you wanna be, tho, go for it.

So good and unpretentious. The hooks, the melody, the guitars. Perfect.

Apologies for my former posts. Rough week. This record is good and straight up indie rock which feels refreshing to me tho I wish she would rip a little more. When she does it’s great. Very melancholy record
― Slippage (Ross), Monday, 11 June 2018 04:48 (five years ago) link
I think this album is a good example of its kind of indie-rock -- but it's perhaps not ideal for listeners seeking strong/distinctive melodies, guitar lines, etc.

She’s a fantastic player but yeah the Barnett record is a little more hot lava, but anyways snail mail is an artist who has a bright future

Dunno I really dug the cranberries vibe of her ep and this is more of the same.
― Slippage (Ross), Monday, 11 June 2018 19:54 (five years ago) link
would that i heard the cranberries in this
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 11 June 2018 19:55 (five years ago) link
Mostly heard it in thinning from the ep
I get why people aren’t crazy about this but I’ve started really liking her vocal phrasing, mostly her voice is like a slacker Dinosaur Jr vibe and somewhat sad but idk
― Slippage (Ross), Monday, 11 June 2018 19:57 (five years ago) link
i Feel best coast is a fair comparison for a straight up indie record

initial reaction to the album was negative but it has grown on me a lot. not a great album, but some keepers on these for sure. particularly like Speaking Terms and Full Control.

This thread is baffling to me, Lush is definitely up there for me on 2018 records. The Cranberries aren't quite what i'm feeling, but i love the referential matrix that Ryan Dombal made in his pfork review, although some might think it's a bit overwrought.
There are echoes of early Liz Phair in Lush’s stark guitars and its tightrope walk between despair and enlightenment, but there are also flashes of the Replacements’ Paul Westerberg at his most wrung-out, and Paramore’s Hayley Williams crinkled emo soulfulness, and Fiona Apple’s ferocity, and Taylor Swift’s savvy heartache, and the solemn quietude of Frank Ocean’s Blonde.
Not sure about Fiona Apple and Frank Ocean, but the rest? Definitely.

Her voice which I like a lot reminds me of someone else. An indie lady from the 90s, I don't think it is Juliana Hatfield. Pristine is indeed very nice. And the 3rd song "Speaking Terms" is such a pure, vulnerable beauty.
― Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Thursday, 11 October 2018 17:53 (five years ago) link
Didn't find it (if there's any reference I would add it's that 'Stick' reminded me slightly of Mark Kozelek ha)
but Christ, Habit is a bloody wonderful EP, esp. given she was 17.

i know they get made fun of in the same breath bc of their band names but this album is having a very similar effect on me as the last soccer mommy

that's funny, I came here to say I've heard nothing but great things about the new album but that they're one of those bands I've avoided because of their name, like soccer mommy.

I think I need to see how this one grows for me, lyrically I love this, and her voice is even more wonderful here, but it's a little more laidback than I'd hope. I like her voice with more fuzz and guitars.

"Glory" rules my world today. It goes to places I've been close to before but had not reached yet. I cannot stop listening to it again and again though I fear I am going to wear it out if I continue. She reminds me a little of Conor Oberst. She must have been 16 when she did "Static Buzz", that is pretty stunning.

I'm late to the party but I'm absolutely loving Valentine.
I've gone back to LJ's earlier work and it's not doing as much for me. Lush has some great tunes but seems pretty patchy. Worth another few listens as it may be a slow burner. Habit benefits from some lovely guitar work but the whiny slowcore emo vibes aren't doing it for me.
