Yeah they were busy for a couple of years there, and then did tour mbv a bit via festival appearances here that year, but then they went to ground. Given the rapturous reception Slowdive in particular has received, there's an audience totally primed to see MBV now; not surprised they sold out the first date up here and put up a second, and at a pretty good sized venue in the Fox Theatre.

how is the Shrine as a venue?
despite seeing hundreds of shows either in Los Angeles or San Francisco, i have yet to go to the Shrine. i have asked around and it seems to get good reviews.
have i said how exited i am for this?

Sorry for my ignorance but are they coming to NY?
― calstars, Saturday, 19 May 2018 01:23 (five years ago) link
If you mean NYC yeah, playing Hammerstein Ballroom.
― early rejecter, Saturday, 19 May 2018 01:37 (five years ago) link
Not sure if I'm going to be in either LA or NYC for the MBV shows, but it'll be one of them. MBV outdoors at FYF 2013 was a full-out earthquake tumult. The PA power blew out towards the end of YMMR but the onstage sound was so wide that it didn't really matter. Kids were crowdsurfing, dancing, LA shoe gazers totally amped.

Mbvs last one is the best reunion record I’ve heard. Slow dives one started out sounding like a dreamy spin onStreets of Philadelphia but mbv rocked it

Going to see them at the shrine next month but thankful I got to see them at a venue 1/10th the size a couple years ago.

New song sounds fairly indistinct, but then trying to actually record an MBV gig on your phone... Fairly hopeful this thing will come out in the next month or two though, if the roll-out's anything like the self-titled.

Was looking at seeing the Philly show at the end of the month but two tickets with fees come to over $180 which is just insane. I saw them in 2013 and paid just over $100 for a pair of tickets. I can't justify spending that much so I'm not going. :(

seeing them on Sunday, can't wait. in Los Angeles the ticket were about $60 each, wow at that rip off price.
― Bee OK, Thursday, 19 July 2018 00:15 (five years ago) link
i paid $100 each for Nine Inch Nails and the Jesus and Mary Chain residency show in Hollywood and felt like that was too much for a general admission show.

Anyone familiar with the Oakland opener Lumerians? Worth seeing?
― skip, Thursday, 19 July 2018 06:49 (five years ago) link
Is the Philly show sold out?? I paid $127 even for 2 tickets
― the masseduction of lauryn hill (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 19 July 2018 14:04 (five years ago) link
Oh, that explains it, Philly is sold out and the TM site automatically shows you reseller seats which I did not know until just now when I told it not to do that.
I might have paid $127 for two tickets too. Oh well.

Short tour. No DC this time. Old guy me saw em in DC way back when at the old 200 people capacity 930 Club. Loudest show I have ever been to.

FWIW, here’s a clip of that new My Bloody Valentine waltz. Doesn’t really do justice to how lovely the melody sounded. pic.twitter.com/2r0jdgkcRV— connect_icut (@vinylscrobbler) July 18, 2018

there were 3 new songs. it was great but took several songs before they got the sound dialed in; first few tracks sounded awful. the FOX is not a great sounding room

how loud are they now? obv will wear earplugs but I've heard horror stories about it and have to be sensitive to my ears
― The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 21 July 2018 14:08 (five years ago) link
i saw them in denver in 2013 and it was your standard ‘p loud’ show, then at roy wilkins that year which has a much more powerful sound system which made it like a full body experience, it like made my back hurt because i was so tense. (i was also extremely high) i think you’ll be fine tho. they sort of just, as mentioned, dial in the sound and slowly turn it up... i honestly think mogwai was louder
― global tetrahedron, Saturday, 21 July 2018 14:39 (five years ago) link
i’m not sure how powerful the sound system is at the palace, i actually liked slowdive at the fine line versus the palace haha
― global tetrahedron, Saturday, 21 July 2018 14:40 (five years ago) link
cool thanks, I'll probably do itthe fine line is kinda underrated at this point tbh
― The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 21 July 2018 14:49 (five years ago) link
that’s a minneapolis hot take and i’m all for it. i think the show is designed for earplugs really, only gig i’ve been to where there were dozens of signs mentioning ‘EXTREME VOLUME’ and to use earplugs
― global tetrahedron, Saturday, 21 July 2018 15:20 (five years ago) link
MBV is all about ringing trebles and those sounds are blocked by earplugs. I also thought the sound was muddled but assumed the problem was the plugs. I'm not great with extreme noise and had better results going all the way to the back of the room to let them off a bit, but that's a terrible place to watch a show.
Cool to see them in person though.
― skip, Saturday, 21 July 2018 15:37 (five years ago) link
I could feel air move when I saw them at an indoor venue in Texas.

When I saw them 10 years ago (and stupidly didn't wear ear plugs) I thought the sound was very muddled. The vocals were almost non-existent and some tunes were such a sludge of noise that it could take up to a minute to work out what you were listening to.

Best concert yet using my custom ear plugs with the -15dB filters (definitely heard all the highs). Yet the cacophony at the end was almost too loud with them IN. Damn. This was at the Fox btw. And yes the mix for the first few songs was crap.

Hahaha. I have never worn earplugs to a show before but had been thinking that maybe I should for this one and this thread has pretty much cemented that decision for me.
― Hi My father very Rusted Root with me what can I do? (Old Lunch), Monday, 23 July 2018 14:25 (five years ago) link
I saw them many moons ago at the Santa Monica Performing Arts Center and it was a totally different experience. Assume it was because the venue was like 1/4th the size. I didn't feel as bad about leaving early bc I had that in my back pocket but my wife was pretty pissed.
― officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Monday, 23 July 2018 15:12 (five years ago) link
about what? way too loud? muddy sound?
― Karl Malone, Monday, 23 July 2018 15:18 (five years ago) link
yeah the sound, the size of the venue and ear plugs basically reduced everything to a dull monotone roar and she's short and couldn't see anything
