Rolling Stones - The Weirder Songs S/D

There's so many songs named in this thread so far that are essential Stones.

Yeah, "Paint It, Black", "2000 Light Years...", and "She's a Rainbow" are easily among my favourite Stones songs period.

Is there really a comma in the title of Paint It Black? The first time I ever saw it thusly punctuated was in the Brian Jones book. Now I see it both ways, split pretty evenly.

It was originally released as "Paint It, Black", the comma being an error by Decca Records

there is no rolling stones song called "dead doctor" but that's a helluva title.

Downtown Suzie, which I have more fondness for than it likely deserves.

If we're talking about psychedelic Stones, then 'Citadel' is fucking incredible. If only the rest of Satanic Majesties had been of the same quality!

I did a quick run through everything as I put that list together, and a few things I was sure would make it (many mentioned upthread) ended up getting dropped. Listening back to, say, "Dandelion," it's got psych bits, but it's really a straightforward pop song.

I'm a little confused by classifying songs as weird vs just genre or era specific, but as far as psych-stones songs go, 'We Love You' to me is arguably the peak, if only for being one of the few songs that really carries Brian's Moroccan/Joujouka influence and shows how powerful it could be when mixed with what Keith and Mick were writing at the time. His mellotron part is fantastic, especially because there was a slight delay when you'd hit a note so to get the rhythm that tight would've taken a lot of practice.

"Sex Drive" (1991) the James Brown pastiche they stuck on their live album is kinda weird, definitely qualifies as a "genre goof"

Dance (Pt 1) is amazing and not weird at all, but Mick's monologue in the first 30 seconds, which seems to be approximating the sound of failed banter, is a bit weird

am I the only one who thinks that's a nod to Lou's opening lines on 'Gimme Some Good Times' off Street Hassle?

Okay, so I get that the 1968-1972 stuff is what defines the Stones for a lot of people and there's a lot of undoubtedly great music in that period, but the reality of it is the Stones never stopped experimenting. Their moves into disco/funk/reggae etc. were as far away from 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' as '2000 Light Years From Home' was from 'Come On' ... Sure, not all of their experiments worked, but neither did all of their attempts to fall back on their so-called "signature" sound.
