When tracks become downloadable as opposed to streamable, and the site isn't a giant baffling clusterfuck, I will subscribe

Mahogany Loggins (bizarro gazzara), Sunday, 13 May 2018 13:04 (five years ago) link

I can think of no legitimate reason why Homegrown still has not been released, and it infuriates me to no end. That's Neil tho

wait...didn't NYA launch last year? was that all a weird dream?

maybe not the most exciting release, since it's been bootlegged for decades, but it deserves to be in the official canon (and the cleaned up "Campaigner" definitely sounds great).
Does seem like it should be a double disc with Crazy Horse performances from that tour rounding out the picture, but that would make too much sense, wouldn't it.

tylerw, Friday, 19 October 2018 15:50 (five years ago) link

so these are just the songs already available as the Bernstein tapes? they are great! but yes not so exciting then as a new release.

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 19 October 2018 15:59 (five years ago) link

yeah as far as i can tell it's the bernstein tapes, no more no less

tylerw, Friday, 19 October 2018 16:02 (five years ago) link

Is there a reason for the title, or am I an idiot for even asking?

grawlix (unperson), Friday, 19 October 2018 16:43 (five years ago) link

there's a stoney monologue about judy garland at the beginning

tylerw, Friday, 19 October 2018 16:44 (five years ago) link

makes me wish the canterbury house release was called Songs for Really Great Diet Pills.

one month passes...

I'm a made man.

So....to get presale tickets for one of the three theater shows he's doing in Minneapolis I am a card carrying subscriber to Neil Young Archives.

Is there anything supposed to be exclusive to subscribers? I can't really find anything so far...

No Smockin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 13 December 2018 16:53 (five years ago) link

It's all been uploaded to yr PONO

Bênoit Balls (stevie), Thursday, 13 December 2018 17:10 (five years ago) link

Songs for Judy is fine but I dunno, it's like...the 5th most interesting solo acoustic Archives release?

No Smockin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 13 December 2018 17:38 (five years ago) link

i dunno, i think it's my favorite of his solo acoustic things? nice and stoney and loose, some real deep cuts. massey hall is probably the closest competition. it's just dumb that there isn't a second disc of crazy horse stuff from the same tour.

tylerw, Thursday, 13 December 2018 18:10 (five years ago) link

speaking of which, this is one of my fave electric sets from the period: https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/181018875542/neil-young-crazy-horse-music-hall-boston

lol here comes more ... it's becoming clear that neil is (even more than usual) making all of this up as he goes:

Wow... honestly though another albums worth of Ragged Glory is pretty damn exciting, also hopefully a tour? Would love to see the Nils lineup tour

No Smockin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 16 December 2018 16:19 (five years ago) link

yeah, it sounds awesome! just funny that 30+ years into the archives process, they're like "what the hell is this? we should put this out!"
dunno about crazy horse touring ... my guess is if they do more shows it'll be along the lines of this year's california shows (a short run).

tylerw, Sunday, 16 December 2018 16:21 (five years ago) link

Would love the vinyl of this but its probably gonna be like $100 isnt it

Οὖτις, Sunday, 16 December 2018 16:45 (five years ago) link

They seemed to have learned the lesson from the unsold copies of A Treasure and Americana that will be in record stores for years to come

Songs for Judy is double lp and $25ish, Hitchhiker single vinyl I think I paid around $17 but was also at my local Mom n pop so could have been cheaper probably

No Smockin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 16 December 2018 16:53 (five years ago) link

I'm confused...are they saying only these unreleased tracks were recorded at Plywood Analog? Because the album (according to the liner notes) was recorded at Plywood Digital, and was the second of three (or four, if you count Arc-Weld) albums he recorded digitally before he realized he hated digital recording.

Next NYA post: Sorry, more tapes have been discovered and you're now getting Everybody's Rockin' II.

Infidels, Like Dylan In The Eighties (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 17 December 2018 15:24 (five years ago) link

Gotta a feeling that Neil's trips through the archives are all along these lines:

"Whoa there's so much good stuff we didn't use for Fork In The Road! We should put this out!"

chr1sb3singer, Monday, 17 December 2018 15:42 (five years ago) link

there's a video in the archives now with him going through various old memorabilia and you can kinda tell that the people working for him are like "this is going to be our only chance for the next year to get him to pay attention to this shit"

I can verify this is the case from firsthand accounts

should be good! hilarious that 30+ years into the process, Neil is still just making it up. This isn't even listed on the NYA "Timeline" and has never been mentioned as a possible release til a few months ago (ditto the Ragged Glory II thing he teased a little while back).

tylerw, Monday, 28 January 2019 23:48 (five years ago) link

this year is the 25th anniversary of Sleeps With Angels, I keep hoping for a reissue...

Odeon/Budokan is ready to go, but Tuscaloosa is next."

So...we're never seeing Odeon/Budokan.

Got to see Neil last night and my god it was so great I love Neil the most

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 06:48 (five years ago) link

I'll take whatever he gives us, to be completely honest, even ones I wasn't all that jazzed about turned out pretty cool.

Dumb question, maybe, but would that electric '76 collection they mention in the Songs For Judy liner notes be the same thing as Odeon/Budokan? Or would that be completely different '76 stuff? Either way, I want more of that stuff soon.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 15:20 (five years ago) link

Odeon / Budokan is from the Spring 1976 tour. The Electric '76 tour would be from the fall shows. (Fairly doubtful that the latter collection is forthcoming any time soon, but who knows?)
Looks like you got a great setlist, Matt! So glad that "Thrasher" is back in the mix consistently.

tylerw, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 15:54 (five years ago) link

Thanks for clarifying Tyler, wasn't sure about the '76 timeline. I hope those both come out! But, like you said, not gonna hold my breath on either one.
