The Late Great - I know it seems like it, but I promise I am not trolling you. I have seriously never heard of anything in this thread aside from Autechre and Portishead and Larry Heard. Primitive Painter(s) is a Felt song for me. I really did recently discover Andy Stott and liked it and then I read the ILX thread saying it was overrated and my curiosity shot through the roof. What do you guys and gals think is NOT overrated? I'm mostly interested in the last 5-10 years. Not sure when I'll get to 1994. I'm starting at the beginning (LOVE E2-E4 but I'm already well-acquainted with that one) like Mr. Fingers, etc. and then trying to pay attention to current stuff that's coming out. Never heard the name Jon Hopkins before yesterday, for example. Have a bad feeling about that one though.

Thanks everyone for the recs!

SA, Friday, 11 May 2018 21:29 (five years ago) link

xp haha i didn’t mean you SA i meant the people at the beginning posting stuff i hate :)

If you're interested in stuff like Fingers you can't really go wrong with this box set:

It's just too broad of a topic for me to even approach

Ooh thanks Colonel Poo that looks rad.

Jordan - to narrow it way down, what is Andy Stott? What is that kind of music called? I have no clue. Do you have any recs for stuff like that?

SA if you like Andy Stott there's a thread here called something like "slow mutant techno" that has lots of similar recs...

Stott called his stuff "knackered house"

brimstead, Friday, 11 May 2018 22:57 (five years ago) link

Kassem Mosse - Workshop 19
Special Request - Soul Music

brimstead, Friday, 11 May 2018 23:01 (five years ago) link

Carl Crack - Black Ark

A frickin masterpiece of distorted dreamzz

brimstead, Friday, 11 May 2018 23:03 (five years ago) link

That's from the 90s, though

brimstead, Friday, 11 May 2018 23:03 (five years ago) link

honestly pretty much all the albums in the "most overrated electronic albums" thread are worth listening to. somebody's going to recommend you a white label ep with no title and no artist and it'll be great but you know, a lot of that thread is like people complaining about how "kind of blue" is an overrated jazz album, which it of course is.

electronic albums in general are overrated. the album isn't the best format for electronic music.

otm

the late great, Saturday, 12 May 2018 00:25 (five years ago) link

Thank you everyone.

I don't know why I can remember every obscure post-punk band but I can never remember any electronic stuff. It's like a mind wipe. I really like Huerco S and listened to that a bunch. Totally forgot it existed. Same with Omar S.

I tried Jlin - I think she might be beyond me.

SA, Saturday, 12 May 2018 00:53 (five years ago) link

try rashad?

“double cup” rightly regarded as the double album version “timeless” of the footwork era

there we go

the late great, Saturday, 12 May 2018 02:58 (five years ago) link

i feel there's this aspect to electronic music that actively works against the idea of a canon. there's other reasons for the glut of whitelabels as well but it feels like part of it is that once you start talking about which records are The Best you close yourself off to the new.

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Saturday, 12 May 2018 15:51 (five years ago) link

Uusitalo - Karhunainen

pomenitul, Saturday, 12 May 2018 15:54 (five years ago) link

Are electroacoustic experiments allowed? Like say:

Alvin Curran - Canti Illuminati (1982)
Alvin Lucier - I am sitting in a room (1981)

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 12 May 2018 16:39 (five years ago) link

Anyhow noone has mentioned Kraftwerk and Man Machine, Computerworld, Trans Europa Express and Autobahn are pretty much perfect.

― the late great,

after years of being on ILx, I have never ever trolled anyone.
it's not my style.
I was genuine re my suggestion re the TOTAL archive, I love them and think they provide a great entry point into all that is wonderful about electronica.
(just needed to put that out the TLG .. )

mark e, Saturday, 12 May 2018 18:52 (five years ago) link

I think some people don’t rate it highly but I really enjoy the Voices From the Lake self-titled, it’s pretty sublime. Some may find it boring, though.

The Moodymann DJ Kicks compilation is essential.

Yagya has released some vv beautiful dub techno, especially the album ‘Rigning’.

omar little, Saturday, 12 May 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

It's a comp, but Carl Craig's Sessions deserves all the acclaim it gets. I keep telling myself I should start a poll for it, I should get on that

josh az (2011nostalgia), Sunday, 13 May 2018 06:24 (five years ago) link

Dr Eich absolutely otm

love Moodyman's DJ Kicks but it's barely "electronica" imo, thought about mentioning Silentintroduction tho

Brad otm about Rush being otm, fuck an album tbh

The Beatles' Solo Deaths Poll (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 13 May 2018 12:54 (five years ago) link

Ok fine here are some random personal touchstones with no order or sense of completeness:

Telefon Tel Aviv - Fahrenheit Fair Enough
Autechre - Chiastic Slide
5 Years of Hyperdub comp
sd Laika - That's Harakiri
James Blake - first 3 EPs and the s/t album
Mount Kimbie - Maybes EP and Crooks & Lovers
Actress - Splazsh
Hudson Mohawke - Satin Panthers EP
Flying Lotus - Los Angeles
Teebs - Ardour
Rustie - Glass Swords
Shlohmo - Bad Vibes
Lotic - Heterocetera EP
M.E.S.H. - Damaged Merc EP
SHALT - Acheron EP

And lots of more dance-oriented stuff that doesn't slot easily into albums or EPs.
