Might end up being my favourite beach. Weird amorphous shit

so many hidden gems to find in this album

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Friday, 11 May 2018 19:43 (five years ago) link

Not sure about how I feel with beach house referencing epic by FNM on Woo

Peaked redundancy (Ross), Friday, 11 May 2018 19:43 (five years ago) link

Girl of the year is like cars drive levels dreamy

Peaked redundancy (Ross), Friday, 11 May 2018 19:49 (five years ago) link

Not bad. A little wishy-washy but it's dreampop! What makes me suspicious: the tunes seem to unfold/unwrap themselves already after the first listen. I fear diminishing returns. The closer "Last Ride" is pretty vacuous.

WOW

Bee OK, Friday, 11 May 2018 23:34 (five years ago) link

Drunk in LA sounds like it could be a brand new Slowdive song. Love this and is right up my alley

Bee OK, Friday, 11 May 2018 23:35 (five years ago) link

xps agree with the claire hamill comp

nxd, Saturday, 12 May 2018 12:11 (five years ago) link

Cheers nxd

Record sounds a lot like the cover

Blood roses (Ross), Saturday, 12 May 2018 13:27 (five years ago) link

Similar to tender buttons in the sense that a lot of the action seems to come spatially in the left and right whereas the vocals are in the middle. Like on lemon glow - the synths or guitars whatever they are attack on the left and right but the song anchors in the middle.

Blood roses (Ross), Saturday, 12 May 2018 13:32 (five years ago) link

Dunno really like this record. Sounds like bsides and slow burners

Blood roses (Ross), Saturday, 12 May 2018 13:34 (five years ago) link

Woo has to be one of my favourite things they've ever done

ufo, Saturday, 12 May 2018 13:38 (five years ago) link

I only just now found out that Sonic Boom from Spacemen 3 produced this.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 13 May 2018 08:29 (five years ago) link

I love woo xpost

Love how the name seems to come from that vocal sample that goes whoooooah

Roll (Ross), Sunday, 13 May 2018 15:03 (five years ago) link

Co-produced with Beach House
Xpost

nostormo, Sunday, 13 May 2018 18:26 (five years ago) link

this is the album i've always wanted them to make, easily their best. they've broadened their sound and largely replaced the retro organs and arpeggios with huge walls of synths and distortion. the most stylistic variation on a single album of theirs too, their previous albums could get quite same-y. all the songs are excellent too

ufo, Monday, 14 May 2018 02:37 (five years ago) link

Nice enough dream pop/shoegaze

curmudgeon, Monday, 14 May 2018 14:05 (five years ago) link

So densely produced I’ve noticed new sonic details every time, gives the record replayability

Depressed and impressed (Ross), Monday, 14 May 2018 14:12 (five years ago) link

Pay No Mind giving off heavy Disintegration vibes.

vmajestic, Monday, 14 May 2018 15:20 (five years ago) link

Plainsong, particularly...

vmajestic, Monday, 14 May 2018 15:20 (five years ago) link

It’s cool on L’inconnue how it’s ambiguous if that’s a slide guitar near the end or a synth. I would be interested to see this played live

Depressed and impressed (Ross), Monday, 14 May 2018 17:15 (five years ago) link

This is the album they have veered towards making all their career. Breathtaking stuff.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 14 May 2018 23:52 (five years ago) link

They've never flown this close to the Cocteau Twins.

This is that shit

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Saturday, 19 May 2018 17:54 (five years ago) link

Woo,
Girl of the year and lose your smile are three of my top 10 beach house now

Ross, Saturday, 19 May 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link

I haven't heard a Beach House album since the first three, diving into 7 now.

The Harsh Tutelage of Michael McDonald (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 19 May 2018 22:58 (five years ago) link

I've spent a week trying to fall in love with this record, it's just not happening. Apart from Black Car there's nothing I get a thrill of excitement from. And I am a huge fan, devoured and savoured every album rapturously since Devotion.

startled macropod (MatthewK), Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:03 (five years ago) link

Xpost to Matthew - that’s ok bud

Ross, Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:14 (five years ago) link

Glad I’m not the only one

calstars, Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:19 (five years ago) link

It's pleasant enough. Might be a grower.

The Harsh Tutelage of Michael McDonald (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:28 (five years ago) link

this is really good though it also feels like they've drifted far enough into shoegaze territory that their sound is less distinct compared to e.g. slowdive or cocteau twins

ciderpress, Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:33 (five years ago) link

Maybe it'll click. Love the Cocteaus, Spacemen 3 etc etc.

startled macropod (MatthewK), Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:48 (five years ago) link

What I like about this is how the abstraction of their lyrics match music that supports that ambiguity

Ross, Sunday, 20 May 2018 00:06 (five years ago) link

I think it still feels distinct compared to the dream-pop canon of Slowdive, Cocteau Twins etc. as despite the added distortion this time around they're still much more synth/organ heavy than either of those bands ever were

ufo, Sunday, 20 May 2018 03:57 (five years ago) link

Before this, the most time I'd ever spent with a Beach House release was the 7" version of "Used to Be" a decade ago. Always gave the albums a once over and then moved on. This one grabs me in a way the band never had.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 May 2018 04:03 (five years ago) link

girl of the year rules

nxd, Sunday, 20 May 2018 15:38 (five years ago) link

I'm starting to thaw y'all

startled macropod (MatthewK), Monday, 21 May 2018 11:00 (five years ago) link

i'll need to listen to this more, i love this band so much but apart from devotion and depression cherry most of their records didn't open up for me immediately

marcos, Monday, 21 May 2018 13:51 (five years ago) link

I feel total trust in the universe knowing a song like L’’Iconnue came out of it

Music is confidence (Ross), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 04:07 (five years ago) link

The counting to seven in French bit is wonderful.

in twelve parts (lamonti), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 06:07 (five years ago) link

Couple sonic details I like

The metallic hi hat in the right channel on dark spring

The slide effect near the outro of l’iconnue which I’m
convinced is an organ fed through a pitch shifter effect

don piano (Ross), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 19:00 (five years ago) link

On tour so don't slouch!

add surface noise (Ross), Thursday, 24 May 2018 19:56 (five years ago) link

Lose your smile woo and girl of the year are a perfect trilogy. Walking in sun to this and felt like I could do anything

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 00:01 (five years ago) link

I love this album so much. I was obsessed with Teen Dream and Bloom, then I kind of lost interest around Depression Cherry and Thank Your Lucky Stars (don't know why!) and skipped that era, but now I'm back on board. I need to revisit those two previous records as well.

ˈʌglɪɪst preɪ, Monday, 28 May 2018 10:27 (five years ago) link

Kinda feel dc and stars were just dry runs for this new record. They sound like demo albums in comparison to 7

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 15:02 (five years ago) link

I love those records but 7 excels in every way at pushing that sound forward

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 15:03 (five years ago) link

yeah otm

ciderpress, Monday, 28 May 2018 15:20 (five years ago) link

One of my fav moments is the voice going “yes!” In woo after Victoria says “I won’t give up”

Something’s coming on Monday? I’m thinking either a live album, or *maybe* a surprise new release like TYLS? (probably wishful thinking)
