Was able to finally finish this up. Not what I'm sure anymore was explaining from Arctic Monkeys. I'm sure fans are going to hate it. I think Brad said it was a lounge record and that it is. Not sure what to think really but don't see myself playing this a lot this year as it's not my style.
― Bee OK, Friday, 11 May 2018 20:31 (six years ago) link
Good for them though to try something completely different
― Bee OK, Friday, 11 May 2018 20:32 (six years ago) link
Isn't the lounge singer thing intentional though, as in it's part of the concept of the record? Or so I read.
Anyway I listened to the four tracks that seem to be getting the most love/attention on this thread and liked them. Not sure I need to hear the rest but yeah, good on yer, Alex.

He's impressed me almost every step of the way. I remember when the first album came out and there was all this Brit-pop hype, with him the next Ray Davies. I was doubtful, but ... the album was good. Then I saw them live behind that record and they were great. Then I totally tuned out except for whatever I heard on the radio, and what I did hear ... was pretty good, too! And this one is really good as well, very Pulp/Richard Hawley/David Bowie, which is nothing I ever would have expected from him.

I haven't heard the album but "4 out of 5 stars" is really good. Lounge lizard Bowie vibes.

"She Looks Life Fun" is brilliant IMO. 70s glam through a 'White Album' lens.

I haven’t listened to this yet, and I’m glad when albums turn out well however it’s done. Yet it’s kind of emperor’s new clothes that no one is saying why so many musicians have gone synth or changed their songwriting style to be less distinctive. The musicians can’t explain it themselves, they’ll get attacked from both sides.
Maybe the public might care a little more with some awareness of what streaming does in specific cases, more so than just hearing about homogenization in general. That’s too ambiguous — it’s 101 that arguments need specific examples to demonstrate the point.
― Franki, Saturday, 12 May 2018 21:38 (six years ago) link
This band has not gone synth or gotten less distinctive.
Muso question: is all the melodic bass stuff a bass or a baritone guitar?

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/review-arctic-monkeys-tranquility-bass-hotel-w520154the Rolling Stone review is pretty negative which fine but quotes like this make your wonder did you actually listen? because it's clearly talking about restaurant reviews"But the meandering LP can't bear the weight of the man at the piano's indulgences; "Four Out of Five" literally riffs off music magazine star ratings"

such a gluey, borderline offputting listen at first. but "american sports" was the first for me to burst open and spill out a load of hooks and glorious bits and pieces - the second verse is wedged in my head.
flipping through the lyrics, i can see where the accusations of smugness come from, but shocked at how he's really scratching a top tier itch and the bowie, walker, mark e smith, nick cave comparisons are not necessarily hyperbole. shocked, i say.

everything about this album invites massive scrutiny of the lyrics, which is, ceteris paribus, a commendable ambition for a guy in his position. I'm not gonna comment on whether they hold op or not, but did MES ever do that in such a way? or even Bowie? You could argue that they both contiuously had other, both implicit and explicit narratives underpinning and driving forward their records.
This record is certainly much harder to pin down than any of their previous work which can make it sound like A. Turner really doesn't know what it's about. That he perhaps stumbled on to an core idea of this distant, enigmatic, dreamlike aesthetic, and put himself, or rather distorted and reshaping perceptions of himself in there and kept feeding it with lyrical imagery and wit.
Either way, I don't really know what to make of it but I find it appealing so far and certainly not ready to write it off.

When Alex first sings "Take it easy for a little while" on Four out of Five, I expect the next line to be "I like to watch things on TV".
