love the 100-song ballot and the long voting period. once i'm through grading i will start hyping some lesser-loved tracks.

POLL Those Years Ago

I'm just beginning to consider what to vote for and... finding it easier than I thought!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 10 May 2018 18:09 (five years ago) link

awesome, can't wait, 100 tracks is daunting but exciting. Plastic Ono Band lock for best album right?

flappy bird, Thursday, 10 May 2018 18:10 (five years ago) link

ah just tracks, no albums

flappy bird, Thursday, 10 May 2018 18:11 (five years ago) link

I wasn't planning on bothering with side polls for albums, individuals, etc. Tracks should speak for themselves imo

Οὖτις, Thursday, 10 May 2018 18:11 (five years ago) link

JL/POB wouldn't be my #1 in that imaginary albums poll.

WilliamC, Thursday, 10 May 2018 18:14 (five years ago) link

It wouldn't be mine, either.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 10 May 2018 18:20 (five years ago) link

me neither

Οὖτις, Thursday, 10 May 2018 18:22 (five years ago) link

it's easy if you try

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 10 May 2018 18:23 (five years ago) link

surely this is a lock for #1

What format do you want them in? I guess something like

1. We All Stand Together - Paul McCartney & The Frog Chorus

will be ok.

Dan Worsley, Thursday, 10 May 2018 18:38 (five years ago) link

never heard "Tandoori Chicken" before. wonder if it was the secret inspiration for "Cook of the House"

noel gallaghah's high flying burbbhrbhbbhbburbbb (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 10 May 2018 18:38 (five years ago) link

Am I the only person who likes "Say, Say, Say" better than "The Girl Is Mine?" I honestly hope not.

Westworld more like Worstworld right? (Phil D.), Thursday, 10 May 2018 18:45 (five years ago) link

I could pretty much take dark horse, plastic ono, all things must pass and call it a day

Ross, Thursday, 10 May 2018 18:48 (five years ago) link

Dark Horse is a fucking woeful record. One or two half-decent tracks ruined by George's vocals.

Am I the only person who likes "Say, Say, Say" better than "The Girl Is Mine?" I honestly hope not.

No, I too prefer 'Say Say Say' ... I'd take 'The Man' over 'The Girl Is Mine', too.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 10 May 2018 18:55 (five years ago) link

I would prefer the format to be like this:

[Artist] - [Song title]

No numbers necessary as long as they're in order (number one at the top etc)

Οὖτις, Thursday, 10 May 2018 18:55 (five years ago) link

gonna continue to rep for obscure George nuggets

I like 'I Live For You' a lot - also, I seem to remember Kula Shaker nicking the riff from 'Ski-ing' for one of their B-sides.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 10 May 2018 19:26 (five years ago) link

or a Beatles-hater submitting a top 10 that's all Kanye, David Bowie, Elton John, Yoko, Nilsson, Michael Jackson, and the Wilburys

will be v interested to see what paul album rates highest here -- band on the run and tug of war were prob the critical faves back in the day, now i'd expect it to go to ram or maybe even mccartney II.

There’s two good songs on dark horse is an insane opinion

that's true, there's actually three good songs (Ding Dong, Dark Horse and It Is He)

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Thursday, 10 May 2018 20:13 (five years ago) link

Extra Texture is worse if that's possible. At least DH has an anonymous mid '70s studio rock professionalism.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 10 May 2018 20:15 (five years ago) link

I’m pretty sure Macca wins this over the length of his career : between « every night », « say say say » and stuff on Chaos, for instance, a lot of great work.
Lennon’s and George’s initial output were stronger, though.

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 10 May 2018 20:28 (five years ago) link

the weird thing for me is that while I find plenty of Macca's stuff pleasant, I'm hard-pressed to consider what I think his greatest solo songs are. a lot of his hits seem slight or just stupid, and the ones that I consider very good don't really measure up to the more canonical hits from John and George's early runs. I mean, sure "Band on the Run" or "Live and Let Die" are good but ... they aren't *that* great.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 10 May 2018 20:34 (five years ago) link

Macca is perfect for the old days of CD-Rs and CS-90s. You do what a pal did for me: stick 15 to 20 album tracks, B-sides, and obscurities. I was charmed.

one year passes...

just re-downloaded the pre-voting listening playlist. which still rules. thanks again!

also just deleted two dozen songs performed and added to the playlist by an acoustic singer-songwriter named "Stewart Harding" ...

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 27 February 2020 18:10 (four years ago) link

Stewart Harding, American singer/songwriter. After toiling in obscurity for the greater part of 2 decades, Harding finally got his big break after posting two dozen songs to a Spotify playlist for a Beatles poll run by internet messageboard ILM[3]. After listening all the way through hundreds of solo Beatles songs, many ILM music fans found themselves mesmerized by the inventive, playful yet melodic Beatles-influenced songs written and performed by Harding. Soon a thread dedicated to Harding's music was posted to ILM[4]. Soon thereafter, the rapturous reception of Harding's music led to a multi-album recording contract with EMI.

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Thursday, 27 February 2020 18:18 (four years ago) link

okay fess up which one of us is inventive, playful and melodic singer-songwriter Stewart Harding

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 27 February 2020 19:10 (four years ago) link

I believed Karl's amazing story.

Alba, Thursday, 27 February 2020 20:06 (four years ago) link

it isn't my story. it's the story of all of us who ever dreamed of finally hitting it big by tacking on some of our songs to someone else's public playlist[2].

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Thursday, 27 February 2020 20:08 (four years ago) link

Something Super Stupid Cupid (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 February 2020 22:54 (four years ago) link

three months pass...

but you know who should have put their songs on the playlist to get a big break? Weyes Blood! do y'all know about this artist? she has her own thread - Weyes Blood - but i'm mentioning her here because her songs in my friend's quarantine playlist really scratch the solo Beatles itch for me. check out "Something to Believe" - like a lost George/John teamup album cut if they'd gotten Nico in to sing, sorta.

haha well the secret's out that i'm behind on my old habit of weeding through the annual polls as my primary means of keeping up with "new" music

Doctor Casino, Friday, 5 June 2020 00:15 (three years ago) link

Ha ha - join the club. Though I'm (recently) up to date with Weyes Blood.

Alba, Friday, 5 June 2020 14:53 (three years ago) link

Ha! I just made a playlist for a friend and put "Something to Believe" right next to "All Things Must Pass". The new Weyes Blood album makes me want to go back in time and force George Harrison and Karen Carpenter to collaborate.

Darin, Friday, 5 June 2020 19:23 (three years ago) link

A new angle on my theory that Ringo's solo career should largely have consisted of country-flavored duets: they should have been produced and arranged by George, and Karen Carpenter should have been a regular guest.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 5 June 2020 19:42 (three years ago) link

If you're looking for another recent track that's a cousin of All Things Must Pass, try this:

hey should have been produced and arranged by George, and Karen Carpenter should have been a regular guest.

I like this so long as George insists on Karen drumming.

All Things Must Pass album, I should say, not the track. And it starts out more Esher demo.
