It's not mentioned in the article but the hotel he was last seen leaving at 1am is just down the road from the Forth Road Bridge. Not wanting to be morbid but I don't have a good feeling about this working out well.

Ah shit

One of my favourite memories is of flying into Edinburgh airport, over the Forth Road Bridge, listening to Floating in the Forth ('On a rolled up coat against the window/with the strobe/of the sun and the life I’ve led' makes me gasp every time). What you're suggesting is too much to contemplate.

Yeah, I also really hope I'm wrong

I'm a huge fan of this band. I think they're criminally underrated, not that any of that shit matters right now. I read about this last night right before bed and just couldn't sleep, and I never met the dude. I can't imagine what's going through his loved one's minds right now.

Very sad situation.

Midnight Organ Fight was such a big album for me when it was released and it feels like it was part of a mini surge in superb Scottish music in my memory, with the Twilight Sad and Meursault cutting about, mature Idlewild and Teenage Fanclub releases, and mainstream appreciation for the likes of Camera obscure and King creosote to boot. But above all, I was just deriving so much pleasure putting that particular album on repeat over and over and letting my preferred songs evolve, the least appreciated slowly breaking into firm favourites.

It is in that particular group of albums I have turned to when my heart aches, and will turn to when it aches again.

One of my absolute favourite memories is shambolically dancing down the stairs at a birthday party, infected with joy as Old Old Fashioned came on shuffle.

I met him at the Edinburgh Christmas songwriters club a few years back, a lovely down to earth guy (and a Jambo to boot). I'm really hoping he's okay, wherever he is.

Never met Scott but was hard not to feel like you knew him through the lyrics. The first two albums were huge for me at some difficult points in my life but some lyrics from the last album and the Mastersystem record have actually hit harder over the last few days.

Really awful news for his family, friends and all loved ones. So sad for them.

They passed me by for many years, but have had cause to see them live twice in the last year and was really taken with them. Just awful news.

Don't know anything about this band, to be honest, but yet another young man ending his life this way is just terrible.

Yeah, I had never heard of them either, but this has been all over twitter the last few days and I had been hoping he'd turn up. Definitely sad for all the fans.

seeing this message scott hutchison personally wrote to a fan has broken me. for a man who’s words and music have brought so much light to people in need - this situation feels all the more crushing pic.twitter.com/E8LIefK68j

glasgow being a small place, i used to see him around all the time when i lived in the west end and i know a bunch of people who knew him - just such a sad end for someone who clearly meant a lot to a lot of people

Very sad news. I hadn’t paid a lot of attention to them for a while, but The Midnight Organ Fight is a great album that I still come back to quite frequently.

incel elgort (cryptosicko), Friday, 11 May 2018 14:04 (five years ago) link

Sings the Greys and The Midnight Organ Fight were huge to me during a difficult period of my life. I saw them five times during this period too (twice in tiny places, with no more than a handful of people). They were a humming constant, a little engine of optimism. Ach, it's such a fucking shame.

Last month was the 10-year anniversary of The Midnight Organ Fight, and the band celebrated by touring the album in full to sold-out venues across the UK. Midnight’s closing song, Floating in the Forth, details Hutchison visualising taking his own life, before he triumphantly sings: “I think I’ll save suicide for another year.” At every live show, particularly during this last run of shows, this was a line unanimously and cathartically screamed back at him, signalling how supportive the lyric, song, album and man have been to so many. Given the aligning of circumstances, it’s tempting to desperately scramble for meaning or prescience in this, to derive some significance and symbolism from what has happened. But there is no tragic poetry in this death, only tragedy – and the loss of a wonderful songwriter and a better person.

I think that's sincere. Limmy forsook his usual 'charity do' bit to say something straight-up sad as well

that is absolutely disgusting.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Monday, 14 May 2018 23:11 (five years ago) link

ok i'm a big FRabbit fan, but what is so disgusting about it? there's a mild pang in the joke that the band's music could've helped him (also a reference to how it helped so many, imo), then the sincere one in the middle and the third one wouldn't be a bad thing, either.

what am i missing here? to me this reads like the staff at The Onion being about as close to sincere as it ever gets. (but i def could be missing something.)

alpine static, Monday, 14 May 2018 23:44 (five years ago) link

I can't get my head around the intention. What's it doing on that site? why would you make an article that includes fictional opinions from people who don't exist about someone who committed suicide a few days ago? why would anyone make this?

Heavy Messages (jed_), Monday, 14 May 2018 23:51 (five years ago) link

The "irony" in joke #1 seems grotesque (and dumb); and joke #3 seems grotesquely trivializing. I'm not very familiar w/FR, just speaking as a bystander.

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Monday, 14 May 2018 23:52 (five years ago) link

One day I'll make a top ten track list for the band for those who kind of dropped off after tmfo. To me this band hadn't fell off, aesthetically speaking.

imagine being so brilliant that you can write a line like:
