about halfway through i had a lot of "omg i can't believe this scenery is real and i'm running here omg omg" moments but after a few too many sandtraps and i don't even know what else, some heat and thirst issues probably, i was tripping and ready to be done but dear god it's a beautiful place. i have my annual pass ($25) and it's 10 minutes away so i definitely see more running up and down walls of rock in my future, tho definitely not all 10 miles every time!

tomorrow morning before work i'm running a loop in the klondike bluffs trails, probably 6-7 miles. it's a huge area though, you could easily construct many big runs there and see new terrain every time. basically it's a slab of rock that tilts up to a ridge in three miles or so and the slab runs horizontally for idk 30 miles? trails follow the ridge at the top, cross the rock near the bottom, or go from bottom to top. there are lots of smaller ridges and valleys that are formed across the uplift. there are dinosaur steps and seas of slickrock. the trail system is only about 5-6 years old and the area has always been fairly remote so it's really pristine. the views at the top are really dramatic. there are all kinds of wild surfaces you're running on. it's fantastic.

glad you can enjoy slickrock! i remember my first time round it in 92- way more than my most recent time, maybe 5 years agoe. so mind blowing, a solidified ocean. it was free, nobody camped sand flats- I remember I was down on the river for a night, then I think pucker pass. lions back was still running jeeps. a lot more empty space, but still rad.

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 05:44 (five years ago) link

yeah people who have lived here for a while say it's changed pretty dramatically in 10 years, let alone 25!

you bet, nancy (map), Wednesday, 9 May 2018 05:56 (five years ago) link

yup and in 92 it was barely an mtb mecca and you could meet ppl from moto world who remembered it pre-mtb as a moto track, right? It’s always mutatis mutandis here on earth... have a good run-

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 11:50 (five years ago) link

still haven't made it to moab u_u

gbx, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 20:18 (five years ago) link

i just registered for a 5k! anticipation...

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 20:21 (five years ago) link

Made it thru, beat reasonable objective time by 2 secs. I had no extra speed at the end, my energy expenditure was pretty right on for a tt. For a non runner it seemed fair and fun, and the pancakes and beer were legit tasty.

Sub 19 again this week. Added bonus was beating CJ from Eggheads

groovypanda, Saturday, 12 May 2018 20:04 (five years ago) link

Much respect. (but with a side of slightly resentful envy, how do u do it!?)

Hunt3r, Sunday, 13 May 2018 03:15 (five years ago) link

sub 19 is legit smashing it imo, kongrats gp

i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Sunday, 13 May 2018 07:48 (five years ago) link

two weeks pass...

i've been kind of slogging it through runs lately but this morning i had one of those 'high as a fucking kite' runs that come along every once in a while... ah life.

you bet, nancy (map), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 19:34 (five years ago) link

I've been running on and off for over half a decade and have yet to experience that lol

Simon H., Tuesday, 29 May 2018 19:49 (five years ago) link

Lol yep, still waiting on that.

Still return to running program, run/walking, for the past 2 months, up to 10 minute run, 1 min walk. Hope to return to continuous running next week. So out of shape though. I’ve lost at least 45 seconds a mile off my easy run pace. Shit takes forever to come back.

Jeff, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 19:56 (five years ago) link

good lord then why do you guys do it. it's supposed to be fun.

jeff try squats you'll be back in no time.

thumbs up

you bet, nancy (map), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 20:33 (five years ago) link

i gave a ride to this woman a few weeks ago, can't remember her name but she was 70% blind from some accident and traveling the world, she gave me $20 which was nice because honestly i needed it.

you bet, nancy (map), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 20:35 (five years ago) link

this was after a trail run and she was also running when she put her thumb out. i stopped because it's rare to see other runners in mountain bike trail areas.

you bet, nancy (map), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 20:38 (five years ago) link

jeff try squats you'll be back in no time.

I actually have been lifting, 3 days a week since I can only run 4 days a week right now. Squats, bench, overhead press, leg press and a bunch of other stuff. Been at it consistently for 3 weeks now, still waiting for some massive improvement or something. IDK, I hate weights, I just needed something to fill my time so I’m working out in some way 7 days a week.

Jeff, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 21:08 (five years ago) link

guys if u hate running may i suggest riding a bike its much faster and more fun and you dont ruin yr knees

gbx, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 21:52 (five years ago) link

i bought a new bike six weeks ago and i don't think i've done any running since :(

soon though, i promise!

Toto Cuomo (NickB), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 22:12 (five years ago) link

The joy in running is in the suffering! It’s too easy to have fun riding a bike, I don’t need that temptation.

Jeff, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 22:23 (five years ago) link

i like a nice easy ride for run recovery days, loosens the legs up

sprout god (lag∞n), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 22:32 (five years ago) link

why

you bet, nancy (map), Monday, 11 June 2018 22:45 (five years ago) link

oh no!! and i’m not sure i see how that’s all that different from a supersized kids’ balance bike other than the fact the you now have a giant metal pole inches away from your face

two months pass...

Smashed my Half Marathon PB yesterday in the Severn Bridge HM.

Weather was atrocious, course was quite hilly but somehow managed to knock almost three minutes off my previous PB in a time of 1:27:48.

Got a fun, downhill 10K in a couple of weeks then the Cardiff Half a few weeks after that and the Mendip Muddle a week later which will be my first ever trail run (with zero trail training).

Anyone else got any events coming up?

groovypanda, Monday, 27 August 2018 20:29 (five years ago) link

i'm doing a half marathon on september 9th in coney island. the "indian summer half marathon."

i ran 9 miles very slowly yesterday. that's the most i've ever run. i think i'll be able to finish this.

Trϵϵship, Monday, 27 August 2018 20:40 (five years ago) link

If you can run 9 miles you should be able to do 13. Just take it at a comfortable pace (especially if it's hot), make sure to keep hydrated and enjoy the race.

groovypanda, Monday, 27 August 2018 21:17 (five years ago) link

Yep, have fun! Until it stops being fun, then keep going!

good luck Treeship! I'm thinking about signing up for my next half in February, only doing about 10-12 miles a week right now... too hot to be running 5+ miles at a pop, but evenings should cool down below 90F in about six weeks and I can start getting some mileage.

com rad erry red flag (f. hazel), Monday, 27 August 2018 21:41 (five years ago) link

Thanks! I found the secret to increasing my mileage was audiobooks. Before I would have nothing to focus my mind on and the time would just drag on

Trϵϵship, Monday, 27 August 2018 21:45 (five years ago) link

I used to listen to music but after Trump I'm so burned out on sounds I need my runs to be dead silent

com rad erry red flag (f. hazel), Monday, 27 August 2018 21:48 (five years ago) link

I used to do silent in college and loved the meditative aspect but recently have needed music to prevent anxious thoughts creeping in and ruining my momentum

two weeks pass...

finished my half marathon. extremely sloooooowwwww but i want to do the brooklyn half next year now and do it in under 2 hours.

Trϵϵship, Sunday, 16 September 2018 18:53 (five years ago) link

since i didn't train properly i had all kinds of weird soreness for the week after but i did feel exhilarated after finishing. exhilirated and nauseous.

Trϵϵship, Sunday, 16 September 2018 18:54 (five years ago) link

the spousal (now ex-)runner i know says halves are the correct endurance distance for testing endurance speed. much past that, other things are starting to interfere with the speed/conditioning measurement- body type burdens, food processing questions, soft tissue joint complications- sort of like those who say long course tri or longer starts being about how well your body can absorb food/nutrition during exertion which is- is that _really_ an athletic conditioning issue?

Hunt3r, Sunday, 16 September 2018 20:05 (five years ago) link

congrats, btw!

Hunt3r, Sunday, 16 September 2018 20:06 (five years ago) link

Half marathon by far by least favorite distance. They’re just brutal to race.

Jeff, Sunday, 16 September 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

ICYMI, incredible.

Jeff, Sunday, 16 September 2018 21:05 (five years ago) link

i think i injured myself at the half marathon

Trϵϵship, Wednesday, 19 September 2018 21:47 (five years ago) link

just tried running a few km for the first time in a few years and apparently dropping 25lbs will do fuckin wonders for your pace

Dmac TT (darraghmac), Friday, 21 September 2018 21:10 (five years ago) link

This year has been good despite (in NYC) a really cold winter and hot summer. Just hit 1,500 miles, so I'm on course for my goal of 2,000 for the year. Maybe 1/3 of my runs have been in other places since I travel quite a lot for work. A lot of 6am wakeups to run. Barely bother with afternoons or evenings anymore - but maybe should look back into it.

paulhw, Friday, 21 September 2018 23:15 (five years ago) link

My running keeps getting slower and slower at the RPEs, same low running volume and general intensities - i think i’m now off about 20 secs/mile. Weight is the same. My cycling mileage has gone up, but my times there have gotten worse on climbing segments there, too.

I dont expect aging effects are linear or smooth, and i’m wondering if its just an aging downstep? Literally in the past two weeks i had my first noticed incident of reading difficulty at my normal range- i had to push page back a bunch of inches. I’m 51 so ive been the envy of most of my friends for years really, but fuck. Reading glasses are gonna happen before long i assume.

Hunt3r, Saturday, 22 September 2018 00:22 (five years ago) link

“same RPEs”

Hunt3r, Saturday, 22 September 2018 00:22 (five years ago) link

Change up your pace. Throw in some strides at the end of your run or surges during it. Run some fartleks.
