Yes fuck you for pressuring me but fuck yes, Williams over Higgins. By a negligible margin tho. Higgins is grim death. But: they're both utter shite. Williams and his three chins and saggy skin draped around his dead bones has been a pest all his career. And an irritant, snooker-wise, all his career. He's dullness distilled and cut into even more dullness, the way you try and cut cocaine with your bank card like you've seen in a Tarantino movie but it doesn't work like that and it's a crying mess and you blow your nose and blow the coke away and you end up with nowt. That's fucking Mark Wiliams. He's a pain. A nuisance. Yet Higgins otoh is way more of pain: he's done, he should be done, he should be dead tbf, but he's not.

How am I expected to root for any one of these people?

<3 higgins

Apart from Ronnie few snooker players have compelling personalities - but those two have given us a hell of a match, and really I don't think I have ever seen anything like those last 3/4 frames - nothing will ever explain it. Snooker just played at its highest (possible?) level by two people who are re-defining how long its possible to go on for. The level of playing is a replacement for personality.

It was always strange that Williams won this twice. Too many wasted years. Three is pretty good.

Higgins I took a real hatred for because of the match-fixing bullshit. But he is a great, and so dismissive of Trump and Kyren Wilson. Took another all-time great to beat him.

Williams did the press conference naked as promised btw

taking a little break from our ongoing political contretemps to fully agree with this tbh

there's the wrong kind of leftie, and there's mark williams ;)

imago, Monday, 7 May 2018 21:56 (five years ago) link

there's a Mr Snooker Extra on youtube who's got the whole thing up there in 50fps HD (with beeb commentary but footage from inside hall between frames) and it's just as exciting as it was the night itself :)

six months pass...

Been enjoying the UK Champs this year. Ronnie's been taking it easy this year but he's playing well this final against Mark Allen. Lots of scrappy frames but he manages to find solutions to most puzzles on the table.

'Questions asked' seems this years snooker commentary term. Ronnie's not been asked any questions this tournament year, Mark's being asked a lot of questions etc. Otherwise it's same as it ever was: Ronnie wants to haul over the snooker calendar with some champions league tournament, others call it a foolish plan, Steven Hendry still looking very uncomfortable in front of a camera etc etc.

Guessing it will be over p soon tonight.

four months pass...

So, not Ronnie's 6th yet, then.

That aside there have been a few close finishes so far?

xyzzzz__, Friday, 26 April 2019 11:33 (five years ago) link

There have. I particularly enjoyed the frame w/ the respotted black in the Carter vs Lisowski match. Every time I watch they serve up scrappy, tense frames, instead of the big breaks. I'm not complaining.

Bet you Barry Hearn is.

Selby gone. Williams trailing by two going into the final sesh tonight.

This Ding-Judd trump match looks good. Starts tonight.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 27 April 2019 15:56 (five years ago) link

Off the players left I kinda want Ding to do this.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 27 April 2019 15:57 (five years ago) link

everyone does, but he always chokes. but yeah

imago, Saturday, 27 April 2019 16:00 (five years ago) link

If not Ding, then Zhou, surely.

Was glad to see Selby go. Hawkins was impressive this morning.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 28 April 2019 14:57 (five years ago) link

Trump had Ding on the ropes last night. 5-1 and it should've been 6-2 if not 7-1. Trump let him in for 5-3.

It's now 6-6.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 28 April 2019 15:10 (five years ago) link

Bingham-Higgins also tight

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 28 April 2019 15:10 (five years ago) link

Another Carter respot in his match against Zhou. What a frame! And today he turned it around, just like Kyren vs. Hawkins! Sadly can't watch any matches until the weekend

willem, Monday, 29 April 2019 18:04 (five years ago) link

Carter would be a good winner as well.

Meantime the last sesh from Ding-Trump. Ding is 9-7 up.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 29 April 2019 18:15 (five years ago) link

^^ that escalated quickly... Ding sunk like a stone. Zhou did too, but you can forgive the young lad. Missed the respot!

I like Ali Carter though, he's in good form. Shame Bingham seems unable to rough up Higgins.

I'll be going to my very first live snooker tournament in November, in Coventry. As a spectator, not a player :) Am already trying to think of what shirt to wear to that televised event. I do know this: it will not be that 'Neanderthal morphs into snooker player' one that's all over the screen this tournament. Nor will it be 'Keep calm and watch snooker', ugh. Recommendations are welcome though.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 29 April 2019 20:42 (five years ago) link

Ding, choking? Never

imago, Monday, 29 April 2019 20:43 (five years ago) link

Ikr? He wasn't even awful awful, just... choking's the word.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 29 April 2019 20:44 (five years ago) link

My analysis of why Kyren the Warrior will never be the best: he often lands too straight on a pot when he should err in the other direction. This means he is often forcing angles or really deep screws and ultimately breaking down. A bad angle is always better than no angle.

Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 10:55 (five years ago) link

Sadly can't watch this now, stuck at work. Gilbert had some crazy good pots last night.

Kyren has the most melancholy expression of the bunch. Even when he's winning his face is just stuck in this 'nothing matters we're all gonna die' despair.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 10:58 (five years ago) link

make your own shirt! (I don't know, think of something. "Snooker? I don't even know her!")

StanM, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 11:20 (five years ago) link

JV has memes himself to death with that shit.

Higgins is all time third in ranking titles, centuries and maximums. Imagine if he didn't throw games for Russian money.

StanM, Saturday, 4 May 2019 20:51 (five years ago) link

Worst possible outcome of the two semis. But yeah it will have to be Trump now. Dull as ditch water but eh.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 5 May 2019 10:07 (four years ago) link

In the past, Higgins being a mad keen Celtic fan might have prompted me to support him, not now though.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Sunday, 5 May 2019 10:28 (four years ago) link

gilbert higgins semi was tense but higgins was fairly clinical in the last session. gilbert had a chance in the last but must be tough to clutch it out at that level w/out experience

||||||||, Sunday, 5 May 2019 10:41 (four years ago) link

Probably the worst final line-up ever. I don't want anyone to win but I reckon it will be Trump, although I probably want the cheating Scot. He was a really great player, once.

imago, Sunday, 5 May 2019 11:09 (four years ago) link

I kind of think that there are levels of cheating: throwing matches for money is vv bad obv, but he's not getting to 3 consecutive world championship finals by cheating, is he?

StanM, Sunday, 5 May 2019 11:12 (four years ago) link

i was uncharacteristically hating on his opponent just then!

higgins, i reckon, does disproportionately well in long matches, because he is a gritty fucker

imago, Sunday, 5 May 2019 11:25 (four years ago) link

Nobody cares about Trump's lack of charisma - when he arrived he was just a really heavy scorer with a lot of flair at times, but crucially he had no safety game and little maturity. Its why he has never won this.

Higgins is a top 5 all-time match player. He can beat Trump because of the way he plays disrupts the flow of Trump's game. It is going to be a fucking test to see where Trump's game is really at. The only thing is Higgins has had a terrible season so Trump might get away with it, the examination of his game may not be as severe.
