double fantasy

holy fuck this is NOT sounding good at all. It reminds me of the garrulous horrors of the third album.

Humbug is their finest record, IMO... if this new one is most like that, then I might like it.
― Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 9 May 2018 18:04 (six years ago) link
well this isn't good news Alfred. i'm going to stay optimistic along with Turrican and hope for great things from this. the songs i heard live sounded good.
― Bee OK, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 23:27 (six years ago) link
oh wow, this gets release Friday on Spotify, so i guess we will all find out soon enough.
I got notification yesterday that it was gonna be delivered today.
I got one today saying it's delayed. SO, I guess it'll arrive when I'm out and I'll have to go to their depot bladeblah...

can't believe they haven't taken this all down by now:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6phkb5TB1U

Some gorgeous stuff on this ere album but it's surprising just how much of it is samey and cold and distant. I like the highlights very much. Batphone is as-good-as unlistenable. Seems they are trending on Twitter in the UK because people hate it so much, it's The Last Jedi all over again.
― piscesx, Friday, 11 May 2018 01:12 (six years ago) link
Turrican otm about Humbug being their best, jumped off the bandwagon before AM came out but the distaste for this new one has me curious
― devvvine, Friday, 11 May 2018 07:15 (six years ago) link
lounge!
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 12:41 (six years ago) link
huh, from the first three tracks i think i really like this? i guess i'm not surprised it's getting panned though
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 12:50 (six years ago) link
Living with it for almost a week, I'm convinced half of it meanders in search of melodies that Turner's piano and voice can't support, but it was ever thus with these dudes.
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 12:51 (six years ago) link
the melodies are a little oblique and ungiving sometimes ("golden trunks" seems to go in reverse every time it alights on something pleasurable to hear)... but i'm pretty sure that's why it's good
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 12:57 (six years ago) link
AM is pretty samey too tbh, despite some excellent songs. I've never made it through from start to finish i don't think
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:01 (six years ago) link
oh wow it was all worth it for "four out of five"
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:01 (six years ago) link
these songs are all short but they're very internally proggy
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:04 (six years ago) link
you are NOT going to get me to hear this
― imago, Friday, 11 May 2018 13:04 (six years ago) link
― flamenco drop (BradNelson),
yes, this is the highlight (those harmonies).
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:05 (six years ago) link
apparently everyone hates "batphone" but it sounds like the rest of the record
and it's good
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:13 (six years ago) link
This is their Black Celebration.
― piscesx, Friday, 11 May 2018 13:22 (six years ago) link
At this point the Arctic Monkeys are rapidly overtaking Lana Del Rey as the people who should obviously be working on the next James Bond theme
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:25 (six years ago) link
Yeah you can just imagine it can't you? I mean they let Radiohead have a crack..
― piscesx, Friday, 11 May 2018 13:29 (six years ago) link
I don't particularly care about them but man "Four out of Five" is indeed a jam
― Simon H., Friday, 11 May 2018 13:31 (six years ago) link
― piscesx, Friday, May 11, 2018 9:22 AM
There's one track that begins with a synth preset right out of mid '80s Depeche Mode.
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:31 (six years ago) link
ah it's "Batphone."
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:32 (six years ago) link
this record brings up a lot of weird comparison points for me. like i feel like jellyfish might've made this record had they traded in paisley overalls and wide-eyed awe for impenetrably dark sunglasses and ennui
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:38 (six years ago) link
Turner's always traded on ennui, though, right? This time he's shooting for the rotter vibe of This is Hardcore, and I'm still wondering if he's cramming too many words onto rickety melody lines.
I realized yesterday that I had a terrible download. The stream sounds much better.
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:42 (six years ago) link
oh yeah totally it just feels even more locked into that ennui than even their previous records. this is hardcore came to mind too
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:46 (six years ago) link
bowie/queen glam/prog axis of worship but sitting poolside and dissociative

poolside did you say

damn I really like this, the fact that UK fans hate it is just icing
― Simon H., Friday, 11 May 2018 13:58 (six years ago) link
I dig this so far! seems like it would be good to get lifted to
I think not being super invested in the Arctic Monkeys helps
― The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 May 2018 14:05 (six years ago) link
I've yet to hear this, but if people are hating it because it sounds like Humbug or because it isn't their (incredibly overrated) debut then I may like it.
the fact that UK fans hate it is just icing
Explain.
― Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 11 May 2018 14:12 (six years ago) link
oh I just love the idea of Mojo-reading lads being like "hell yeah time to rock" then listening to...this
― Simon H., Friday, 11 May 2018 14:13 (six years ago) link
I'm not excessively fond of the debut or "I Bet You Look Good..." either; the second album impressed me, though, and "Fluorescent Adolescent" remains their best fast single imo.
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 14:14 (six years ago) link
this doesn’t sound like any of their previous records
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 14:32 (six years ago) link
there’s also a pretty audible r&b element in the first two tracks, makes me think turner’s been listening to a lot of al green
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 14:33 (six years ago) link
Re 'MOJO reading lads' Mojo had the first interview before the album came out and the band did a playlist of influences for 'em (Dion, Nino Rota, David Axelrod, Gainsbourg..) so anyone reading Mojo knew before anyone else that the record wasn't a rock album. It's more for 30 and 40-something types Mojo. Lads are more 'LadBible' these days.
― piscesx, Friday, 11 May 2018 15:01 (six years ago) link
I feel like people like to use Mojo as a strawman more than anything, this is a total record collector Mojo album
― The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:02 (six years ago) link
I confess I have no idea what the lads read these days and I don't think I've read a mojo article in at least half a decade, just didn't want to use NME since they went under or something
― Simon H., Friday, 11 May 2018 15:04 (six years ago) link
I don't think "lads" have ever read Mojo. Mojo is more geared towards a Steve Hoffman Forum type of audience.
― Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:09 (six years ago) link
What the hell is this?
― Bee OK, Friday, 11 May 2018 15:14 (six years ago) link
180 degree change. I think I like it
bee ok otm
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:18 (six years ago) link
I haven't listened to this yet, but I long assumed that it was going to sound like a Last Shadow Puppets album. Am I wrong in this assumption?
― MarkoP, Friday, 11 May 2018 15:18 (six years ago) link
that is wrong, I think? (never heard the second one)
― Simon H., Friday, 11 May 2018 15:21 (six years ago) link
it feels pretty linked to "everything you've come to expect" from the second one
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:24 (six years ago) link
Haven't heard it yet but remember them throwing 'Lounge' around a lot during the Suck it and See press, into the idea of their biggest record just being an anomaly.
Also Simon's right, as immature as it is, pissing off the nme/britrock/catfish and the bottlemen crowd will always endear me.
