thanks for reminding me of the high quality of discourse i'm missing out on

ilx seriously has not really changed in over a decade (besides lower volume posting and more ennui) so i get what sterling is saying.

ilx refights the same battles over and over, each time more rotely than the last

I guess it depends on the guise. Politically speaking, I can see someone evolving. From a music or film perspective, I'm not quite so sure.

I've seen people change regarding all three of those, but music and movies seem way more common in my social circle, almost everyone I know has changed in that regard from their early 20's to their early 30's. I only have one example of a friend who changed politically (from libertarian to socialist).

I think what's more difficult to change than taste or even political allegiance tho is the premises you start from in making your arguments, the roles you attribute to these things in your life.

there are good posts occasionally but the volume and proportion of abysmally dull posts is whelming. every lameass exchange between cranky Dads like the one quoted below brings me one straw closer to throwing my laptop into the ocean

i have been a bit disappointed in the tenor of ILM lately

seems like it's less and less acceptable to call a dud a dud or to suggest a destroy ... it's all rabid fandom, seems like

i get how "why you like something" is generally more interesting than "why you dislike something"

but there should still be a place for disliking things

the older I get the less I think anyone really learns anything significant or has their minds changed tbh. Everyone just seems to get stupider and more set in their ways as they get older (not saying I'm exempt from this phenomenon, to be clear)
