I'm fine with the slow entropic heat death of ilx. I just put on a sweater.

Sometimes feels like a weird family of autodidacts.

Why it took her almost 20 years to recognize I was posting here so much

weird autodidacts may not make the best doctors or lawyers, but they do make for interesting conversation on a wide range of topics

the older I get the less I think anyone really learns anything significant or has their minds changed tbh.

I guess it depends on the guise. Politically speaking, I can see someone evolving. From a music or film perspective, I'm not quite so sure.

That post saying I could never be respected as a tori fan tho

Ha, tbf, your own post was expressing shame and a fear of taint from still having CDs like hers and most of the responses were defending your own collection to you!

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Sunday, 6 May 2018 21:51 (five years ago) link

Srsly, I admire you for even having the balls to link to one of your posts from that long ago. Mine make me cringe more than your Feist CDs probably did for you.

I definitely cringe at that thread

I’ve changed a lot since I started posting here.

Even if I stopped posting, which I get the feeling would make a lot of people happy,
I’d still lurk on ilm. So many discoveries and favorites discovered in the past 15 years or so

i mainly gave up ilx for twitter. this is a a far better place for talking about music, but in terms of all the content-feed and range-of-opinion stuff i used to get from ilx, twitter lets me curate more of the stuff i want, and get less of the same old boring things i disagree with that are expressed at boring length. ilx refights the same battles over and over, each time more rotely than the last -- with twitter or something there's always a new mix at least.

Can't imagine preferring the cesspool of bots and shitty memes and constant outrage of twitter but ymmv i guess

ilx seriously has not really changed in over a decade (besides lower volume posting and more ennui) so i get what sterling is saying.

I guess it depends on the guise. Politically speaking, I can see someone evolving. From a music or film perspective, I'm not quite so sure.

I've seen people change regarding all three of those, but music and movies seem way more common in my social circle, almost everyone I know has changed in that regard from their early 20's to their early 30's. I only have one example of a friend who changed politically (from libertarian to socialist).

I think what's more difficult to change than taste or even political allegiance tho is the premises you start from in making your arguments, the roles you attribute to these things in your life.

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 7 May 2018 13:04 (five years ago) link

there are good posts occasionally but the volume and proportion of abysmally dull posts is whelming. every lameass exchange between cranky Dads like the one quoted below brings me one straw closer to throwing my laptop into the ocean

Love the piece but the elephant in the room is that even by his own standards, Kanye is no genius and has never been.

i have been a bit disappointed in the tenor of ILM lately

seems like it's less and less acceptable to call a dud a dud or to suggest a destroy ... it's all rabid fandom, seems like

i get how "why you like something" is generally more interesting than "why you dislike something"

but there should still be a place for disliking things

the late great, Monday, 7 May 2018 19:25 (five years ago) link

the older I get the less I think anyone really learns anything significant or has their minds changed tbh. Everyone just seems to get stupider and more set in their ways as they get older (not saying I'm exempt from this phenomenon, to be clear)

You should've been clearer by taking the brackets off this as it totally applies to you.

i mean case in point this would have been a really good clusterfuck once upon a time now its just a bit of snark and some rueful admissions

there's a bit of US punctuation chauvinism there, maybe we can leverage something out of that
