One of the true all-time rock records. Every song deserves a vote. Flo & Eddie help knock this album into the stratosphere.

Sushi and the Banchan (Spectrist), Friday, 4 May 2018 05:49 (five years ago) link

Whoa man is that flo and Eddie ??

done and dusted (Ross), Friday, 4 May 2018 05:54 (five years ago) link

Spectrist otm. Flo and Eddie were also instrumental to breaking "Bang a Gong".

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 4 May 2018 12:35 (five years ago) link

thinking back on this i might have to vote "Main Man". the repetition of the words, the absolute perfect tempo of the track, it is super hypnotizing. it really is the ultimate minimalist rock revival song.

i think of Tyrannosaurus Rex as more melodically/lyrically baroque whereas T. Rex is conceptually more stripped down ("Slider"/"Tanx"-era production excess aside). "Main Man" might be the platonic ideal of that newer aesthetic.

Yes he does yes he does

Anywhere anywhere
Got giraffes in my hair
And I don't care

I've always had a soft spot for 'Main Man.' You're not alone, Ross.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Saturday, 5 May 2018 01:50 (five years ago) link

So happy to see all the love for "Main Man", which is one of those songs where I have a super vivid memory of the first time I heard it, where it just froze time and presented itself as the greatest fucking thing in the world.

But there are like 3 songs max on this record that I don't think are among the best rock and roll songs ever written, and as great as "Main Man" is, I'm voting for "Chariot Choogle". That fucking chorus! One of my favorite moments in all of recorded music. Flo and Eddie are god damn angels.

the full "Born to Boogie" movie is super worth a watch as well! that show is from the DVD re-release which includes two full concerts as bonus material. the movie itself is silly and fun: you get lots of live stuff plus silly skits with Ringo, an acoustic-with-string-quartet medley performance (below), and Elton John & Ringo on an early take of "Children of the Revolution".

Ballrooms of Mars

I have to admit I prefer Electric Warrior over The Slider, not by a mile but by more than a nose

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 7 May 2018 05:27 (five years ago) link

he sings "Thank you ma'am!" in that one, which i always took as a nod to "Suffragette City". but both albums were released like a month apart - more proof that he and Bowie were telepathically synced up at this point in time

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 7 May 2018 12:37 (five years ago) link

You dance
With your lizard leather boots on
And pull the strings
That change the faces of men
You diamond browed hag
You're a glitter-gaunt gangster
John Lennon knows your name
And I've seen his
RAH!

had to be 'Ballrooms' for me, it kills me everytime.

whitehallunity, Monday, 7 May 2018 14:58 (five years ago) link

This was hard but so much fun. Before having buyers remorse, "Ballrooms Of Mars
"

Bee OK, Monday, 7 May 2018 20:12 (five years ago) link

"Metal Guru" collapses the distinction between verse and chorus. It's either all verse or all chorus. (I think a little of both, personally.)

May I ask what is on his head in the cover photo? I had it mentally noted as a top hat, but of course it's not, now I'm leaning lampshade.

startled macropod (MatthewK), Tuesday, 8 May 2018 00:13 (five years ago) link

Nope, top hat it is, photo taken by Ringo Starr at John Lennon's place Tittenhurst, no less.

Now for pub trivia night you can ask "Name four album covers shot at Tittenhurst."

I always assumed it was a top hat but you did have me question it for a minute

Bee OK, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 00:26 (five years ago) link

Bee OK, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 00:27 (five years ago) link

I hope to hell i remembered to vote (the slider), but that’s still a nice spread of votes.

eleven months pass...

Feeling troubled today, so when I got home I put this on. I got a smile on my face now.

I didn't vote in this, but it is such a hard poll. Probably between Metal Guru, The Slider, Spaceball Ricochet, or Main Man.

I thought this was the ILM thread where everyone was gushing about Main Man, but no. Anyone know which one it was?
