most jazz is only perceived as intellectual because people don't understand what's going on

it's ok to just find things cool and trippy, theres no need to intellectualize weird splats and pings

brimstead, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 19:38 (six years ago) link

this is how poptimism dies, not with bang but buried under autechre threads

the late great, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 19:39 (six years ago) link

i'm ok w/ killing poptism btw

if you want a really kooky confession, I don't think NTS' highs are as high as elseq's, based on my first listen

imago, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 19:42 (six years ago) link

Hmmmm...intrigued. Please explain!

(I've been immersed in NTS for most of the past 48 hours or so, and yes I do believe I am slowly going mad)

every time someone makes a grand proclamation about which half or third of autechre’s discography is superior i scoff

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 20:24 (six years ago) link

I don't know what that means but I agree with imago fwiw, though it isn't so much that I can't get into anything before EP7 as when I listen back now to those older albums they don't reset my brain chemistry like latter day AE (though some of those earlier albums did at one time). The career demarcations may not be clear cut (see above), but there's clearly a narrative / progression at work over the course of the discography and I feel like they're peaking right now

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 20:50 (six years ago) link

btw not to go all Central Casting Autechre Fan but the concurrent Autechre threads are wreaking havoc on my OCD right about now

Dunno I think the foregrounding of melody in Tri and cichlisuite is dope. Garbage has one of the best melodies in the catalog and vietrmix or whatever it’s called is an ambient portal to pure bliss. Sure there’s lovely parts on later work but I think preference of what yer favourite autechre periods are is fine

done and dusted (Ross), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 21:25 (six years ago) link

Every time they come out with a new one I go through all the old records and it's amazing how great some of those early ones still sound, even if they feel a bit obsoleted or whatever. I mean Incunabula still sounds great, even though it's arguably their worst LP. As much as I love that era of IDM, I never really liked that woozy tape feel that a lot of the classics have. IMO it's tough to break them into eras, each album + accompanying EPs is sort of like an era of its own, though to me the big shifts were on Confield and Quaristice.

frogbs, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 21:26 (six years ago) link

I can't really fault any of their albums. the one that's aged the most is Amber, which I really liked for a long time but doesn't quite hit the sweet spot as much any more. While my love for that one has faded, I've only got to love Incunabula more. I used to think Draft and Untilted were not so hot but now I love them, while the Quaristice/Oversteps stuff has taken a backseat (much as I was impressed with them at the time). I guess with this stuff it's never entirely clear when a certain sound or track will hit you. I still find Confield the most challenging tbh

Predictably, I cannot associate any of these titles with their songs. Like I think I said upthread (or maybe it was on the other thread), I never made the time necessary for elseq to sink in. Part of it was the timing, part of it was the sheer volume of material (though I should mention I'm having no such trouble with the even longer NTS), but I really do need to revisit, and may start with these four. Thanks!

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 22:16 (six years ago) link

man if amber doesn’t reset your brain chemistry idk

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 22:18 (six years ago) link

It's a journey. I love how Autechre's past isn't set in stone. Their enormous evolution continues to put their previous albums into a new light. Amber has def aged the most, but how gracefully it ages. Incunabula can feel so fresh playing it right after, say, NTS 4. Confield is the most challenging, but for me also the biggest sign-post of what was to come, in hind-sight. It's an album that predicted Ae's future, while at the same time sounds 'dated' now, because they caught it out and outdone it times thousand.

xp to DL

also - is Move of Ten the most slept on (as distinct from least loved) Autechre release? No one ever seems to talk about it and I will admit the replay value on that one for me wasn't too high

CONTROP

Autechre is mediocre. They have like 7 good tracks and the rest are obvious piss takes. C74 has more to do with their repertoire than they do.

Aphex and Autechre are like San Francisco and all my other crushes from 16-21 to me. I used to think you were my thing! I aspired to be like them / live in them / be them / whatever and then PBFFTFYDUDHZDDHXJXUFIVICDJAIDYUVKF what the hell is this I need to throw away these shoes and burn the socks

Thank heavens you're here to tell enthusiasts about music (on message borad *I LOVE MUSIC*) to not be too enthusiastic about music. You're really doing god's work.

well played, but keep your fucking mouth shut about the socks, okay? You don’t know the socks.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:05 (six years ago) link

Josh, that’s the seed variable for everything they’ve done that I haven’t liked.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:07 (six years ago) link

LBI this particular thread is explicitly about shitting on autechre fandom, so maybe it's not the best thread for you to be reading?

the late great, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:10 (six years ago) link

don't take it personal is all i'm saying

the late great, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:11 (six years ago) link

people talk shit about music they don't like and disagree w/ statements about whether music is good or bad or not on ILM all the time, not sure why your autechre fandom should be some sort of sacred cow

the late great, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:12 (six years ago) link

Autechre peaked with "Lowride", let's be real

I'm ok with people shitting on autechre fandom; I'm far from their biggest fan. I couldn't care less. But bring something to the table at the very least instead of these, quite frankly, dreadfully weak takes.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:16 (six years ago) link

i guess it’s a little weird to jump into a conversation in which everyone has been enthusiastic about their newest work and say “wow, uh, i got off this train at quaristice for some reason, also i’m gonna be critical of the praise and degree of enthusiasm itt”. just a curious approach

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:19 (six years ago) link

people do that all the time on ILM! usually about way more boring music.

brimstead otm re: lowride, that is an amazing track
