I agree. Everything about this album is the best!!

There was a drugged-out gal in my freshman dorm who, along with her equally druggie bf, was obsessed with the lyric:

My dreams are made of iron and steel
With a big bouquet
Of roses hanging down
From the heavens to the ground

They had some Rimbaud connection or something figured out...

i love this album

top:
going going gone - robbie robertson's lead guitar is one of the best things about PW and he kills it especially in this tune
something there is about you - daily growing otm i love "rainy days on the great lakes" lyric so much, so much minnesota nostalgia on this album. i love danko's bass on this
forever young slow - might be worn out a little but i still find it powerful especially as song from a parent to a child
never say goodbye - more youthful minnesota reminiscing, "twilight on the frozen lake, a north wind about to break"

mid:
on a night like this
tough mama
hazel
forever young fast
you angel you

bottom
-dirge, i find this borderline unlistenable
-wedding song, who has time for this really

one thing i always find a little mystifying about Planet Waves is the general lack of backing vocals from The Band

Yeah love this record, I was actually just thinking about it the other day

Raise yr hand if the first time you heard "Going Going Gone" was on Hell's Destiny Street

Dylan's first #1 album in America on pre-sales alone; after those sales, though, it fell rather quickly.

It's worth linking to a transcription of the text written on the rear cover (I used to sit reading it as I listened to the LP in high school): http://theband.hiof.no/albums/ln_planet_waves.html

yeah, those are great — "Back to the starting point!"

I really have never loved this record as much as I thought I would when I first heard it. My favorite song from the sessions this was taken from - Nobody 'Cept You - didn't even make the cut! Really it's the slow plodding vibe of so much of the material that makes it feel like a slog. In fact, that would've been an even better title for "Dirge".

here's a pretty cool bootleg comp of planet waves-related odds-n-sods

Cool - thanks for posting that!

For real(!?!) The playing is so sprightly and elastic! Even the slower songs crackle with energy!

Does It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) count as a Mama song?

Good album. I love when he plays piano on shit like "Dirge."

(bizarrely, the "Tough Mama" lyrics as they appear on bobdylan.com are very different from the actual lyrics on the album)
