back upthread, but man every time I see the Left willfully cannibalizing itself to talk about "going high", I can't fathom how stupid they are to realize they're playing into what the GOP wants. I mean, had Wolf actually said heinously offensive fat/appearance-shaming shit we should rightfully criticize her for it regardless of who the intended target is, but Christ.

I hate virtue signaling as a term but some of the Lefties on my FB wall almost, almost, almost make me understand why the term is used (but I still hate it so fuck that).

The sad thing is that I'd argue that the majority of people in the general public making those complaints are just parroting responses from the DC media elite rather than, y'know, forming an opinion of their own.

man will Kelly be embarrassed when he gets fired after Barron reads that article to his daddy

Maggie Haberman has a legitimate (if ultimately gross and indefensible) reason for defending the virtue of SHS in the face of imagined slights. Jimmy Joe NYTsubscription, not so much.

in a couple years rebellious prankster Barron will be calling the NY Post gossip reporters, posing as 'Baron'

if there's an interpretation of "shooting fish in a Chris Christie" that does not involve fat-shaming I'd like to hear it

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Monday, 30 April 2018 21:55 (six years ago) link

the fact that there's even debate about whether these jokes told during a friggin roast were even about SHS's looks shows how relatively milquetoast they were. and obv it's one thing for people on the Left to debate it and decided if they were "over the line" and another for the party whose leader said much more direct and mean things about women's appearance (without even being clever enough to do it in joke form!)

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 30 April 2018 22:14 (six years ago) link

Yeah, who cares. Let's talk more about John Kelly, or the ICE guy, or Trump, the perpetual implied punchline to every joke.

The lesbian interpretation is reaching, IMO - the gym / PE teacher is the archetypal bully.

I really don't think it's a coincidence that they chose softball coach.

I would find it offensive if Sanders actually were a lesbian. I don't really see it as inherently homophobic to compare a woman to a gym teacher otherwise.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 30 April 2018 22:22 (six years ago) link

It has nothing to do with being a lesbian, it has everything to do with a burly woman.

Posting here because, well, not sure where else to post this.

"Reality snapped into focus the morning we drove into Downs (population 844). I’d been in a close friend’s wedding there in the 1980s, and the tiny, one-street downtown had teemed with life back then. My friend’s father owned, edited, and published the local newspaper. Another friend’s dad ran a successful real estate company. It took those girls forever to walk anywhere; everyone wanted to stop and chat. Downs had 1,324 residents in 1980—36 percent more than it has today.

Thirty years later, the blank faces of empty storefronts line the main drag. Oddly, one of the last remaining businesses we found was a well-stocked grocery store, though no one was shopping inside the brightly lit aisles. When we asked where we could get a cup of coffee, the cashier directed us to the gas station outside of town on the two-lane state road. A pot of brown water on a quick mart hot plate was the best the town had to offer.

Everywhere, I felt the absence—of people, of commerce, even of sound. The silence was broken only by a vintage pickup truck pulling up to the Downs grain elevator, huge mounds of excess grain piled high on the ground all around it.

That image—abundance at the center of a depopulated landscape—sums up the reality of rural Kansas. Yes, the harvest continues to be bounteous. But it masks a harder truth: Kansas’s plentiful grain crop has come at the expense of nearly everything else."

It has nothing to do with being a lesbian, it has everything to do with a burly woman.

Then I guess "she looks like a softball coach/gym teacher" doesn't seem like a terrible insult to me.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 30 April 2018 23:48 (six years ago) link

It's not, in the scheme of things, but it is generally inferred to mean she is not attractive.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 30 April 2018 23:49 (six years ago) link

good lord, even glancing at these mueller questions for trump has me sweating, and i didn't even do anything wrong. i love the phrasing of "After the resignations, what efforts were made to reach out to Mr. Flynn about seeking immunity or possible pardon?" "what efforts" suggesting "we know about some already, don't even start with your bullshit

I just thought there was enough people in the press corps to actually play softball. Who cares. SHS can eat so many useless bags of dicks in a hetero normative way.

James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!

These were all leaked by Rudy, right?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 01:18 (six years ago) link

or he's just going to straight up lie about some of them, which will be interesting because in some cases I'm sure they have evidence. the repercussions for lying during the interview are?

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 01:18 (six years ago) link

it's perjury to lie to the special council iirc xp

chinavision!, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 02:04 (six years ago) link

Trump is not going to be interviewed by Mueller. Which is why the questions got leaked at all.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 02:19 (six years ago) link

This is some party (i'm not sure on which side) jockeying for advantage via the press, as usual

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 02:20 (six years ago) link

I know I've said it before, but although a Democratic House might move ahead with articles of impeachment in 2019 over perjury and obstruction charges, the Senate Republicans wouldn't vote to convict in sufficient numbers to remove Trump unless there's evidence of much worse crimes added to perjury and obstruction. Also, an impeachment inquiry would suck all the air out of the Congress and D.C., so that nothing else would get done.

I suspect we're all stuck with this goon for the full term of office, even if the foundations of the nation crumble around his feet.

If Mueller can get firm evidence for massive Trump Organization criminal activity, we might see more daylight open up between Trump and the Republicans in Congress in a hurry.
