anyway, just a bunch of culture nerds. people who like Cheer-Accident especially welcome

imago, Sunday, 29 April 2018 14:55 (five years ago) link

so many? There’s only like 3 but they all post a lot :)

frogbs, Sunday, 29 April 2018 15:27 (five years ago) link

ah, there are at least six of us in this thread! as to your question... where would you find cheer-accident fans _but_ a strange, esoteric bulletin board, really?

I mean, if it was a prog music board, or avant-garde music board, I would understand. But I don't see any particular theme to this site. It kind of reminds me of Fazed (anyone remember that?). Is this a place leftover from pre-Reddit days? Give me an "About" section!!!!

it's a very long running music message board and you'd be hard pressed to find an artist/band that doesn't have a thread at this point probably. welcome!

three weeks pass...

Holy fuck how are they still so good? It's streaming in full now btw

When I wrote that "they never stay in the same place" I'm not sure if that's really what I mean, I suppose every album of theirs accentuates different aspects, like I assumed that Putting Off Death was to be one of their last as it had this reflective and subtle feel to it, this one is definitely one of their more poppy albums but they've gone to town on the layers and the guest list.

But the guy who takes the lead vocals on 'I'm Just Afraid' sounds a bit OTT to me, idk

Yeah we just heard it, great innit? Maybe not as great as Putting Off Death but this is a really good run they're on

imago, Friday, 25 May 2018 21:37 (five years ago) link

Probably not as good but I'll see after a few listens how it stands. Loving the progge-ness of 'Last but not Lost' atm!

Overall not enough of Thymme's vocals I think. Though I guess there's the rest of their discog if I want that.

That song is great. Our consensus choice was the one about comforting Mary though

imago, Friday, 25 May 2018 21:58 (five years ago) link

I think it's an excellent collection of songs. Since it's basically all Jeff songs, someone said “this definitely isn’t going to sound like a CHEER-ACCIDENT album”. To which Thymme replied, “well, then it SHOULD be a CHEER-ACCIDENT album.”

FWIW, I generally avoid recurring payments, but I would highly recommend that anyone who likes their music sign up for their subscription service. There is a new track every month which is just as good as anything they release on an album (actually everything from the last two albums was from the subscription at some point). Some of my favorite Cheer-Ax songs are only available in the subscription. They also post old videos which gives even more insight into the antics of their past.

I asumed they were inactive for years, little did I know... probably one of the few bands I'd trust with that kind of thing, I'll look into it

obnoxious pun (ultros ultros-ghali), Sunday, 27 May 2018 09:26 (five years ago) link

yeah I'm a subscriber and it's definitely worth it. the interface can be a little puzzling but there's SO much good stuff

as a new subscriber, do you get access to stuff that was put up before you were a subscriber?

this new one is perplexing, i like it a lot, but yeah this band seems like 10 bands put together

You can go back and hear/see everything from past months (streaming Soundcloud/Vimeo embedded players), but you can only download files (FLAC, MP3, etc.) from the current month. If you find something from the past you really like, I hear they will send you a file if you ask nicely...

this might be Cheer-Accident 101, in which case I apologise, but I did not know that one of their 90s bassists did the sound design on the Mortal Kombat games, and that there is a Cheer-Accident "ad" in the arcade game NBA Jam

Recommended listening for the early '90s indie rock + Mortal Kombat fan: "The Why Album" by Cheer-Accident

Cheer-Accident (whose name you might recognize from an NBA Jam sideline ad) briefly featured Dan "TOASTY!" Forden on bass. He played on this record: https://t.co/91Zt7HQlKk pic.twitter.com/CuVB1doczF

In another touch of authenticity, boards along the sidelines changed ads between periods. Midway wanted to use the same sponsors as NBA television broadcasts, but the league didn’t want to leverage any trademarks it didn’t own. As a result, the team came up with its own sponsors. NBA Jam was brought to you by the likes of Tortorice’s Pizzeria (a real local pizza chain), Air Morris sneakers (a fake shoe brand), Cheer-Accident (the indie rock band Mortal Kombat sound designer Dan Forden played in), and the inevitable Mortal Kombat II.

I should listen to the new stuff!

I saw them live once in an apartment above a store in the downtown of /my college town/. Given the timing, maybe JCLC (who has posted on the thread) was at the show?
