I didn’t read it that way... he seemed to be putting the blame squarely on Miller; and partly on himself, for not “teaching” Miller better (as if it were his responsibility somehow, as a “father figure”).
yeah I read it more as "know the difference between yourself, a person like any other person, and your work, which may well be powerful & have a profound effective on people" - Adams would know, he's a guy whose work had people deifying him early on, but in all fields there's people who really soak that up and get very lost in their own heads as a result.
