she should try to sing in a non-moany way. that would be a massive improvement. I realise, of course, that's her thing but it seems like a bad habit that she could get out of and one that would hugely improve her tracks.

i like her and like her songs but i can tell she's got stuck singing that extremely moany way and that she could get out of it. it's kinda like, you know thom yorke has a voice but he's somehow decided to moooooane awaaaaay rather than sing for a decade plus.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Monday, 23 April 2018 01:47 (six years ago) link

Odd comparison – I find Yorke’s singing voice unbearable, and I quite like CB’s.

absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Monday, 23 April 2018 01:51 (six years ago) link

xxxp: Trams can be quite slow. Preston's about 8km (5 miles) from the city centre. Walkable, if it comes to that.

I quite like the two-act structure of "City...".

Maximum big surprise! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Monday, 23 April 2018 07:17 (six years ago) link

Don't think it's a moan she's got, just a bit of a drawl. An appealingly lazy way of singing. Another Girl Another Planet came on the radio yesterday and it struck me that some of the phrasing, a bit behind, was very CBish (e.g. "I look ill but I don't care about it", "I don't find it irritating"). The way she sings is a big part of her appeal imo.

Eyeball Kicks, Monday, 23 April 2018 08:37 (six years ago) link

eyeball otm. i love her laid back way of singing too.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Monday, 23 April 2018 11:48 (six years ago) link

Kicks otm it’s definitely a drawl. And drawls rule

Incline/decline (Ross), Friday, 18 May 2018 02:33 (five years ago) link

A bit drab, isn’t it?

incel elgort (cryptosicko), Friday, 18 May 2018 17:30 (five years ago) link

I ended up liking this as much as the debut.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 18 May 2018 17:32 (five years ago) link

is there anything as good as Depreston on it?

flappy bird, Friday, 18 May 2018 17:33 (five years ago) link

That’s encouraging. I’m only one listen in, and I admit that I am a bit put off by the draggy front half.

incel elgort (cryptosicko), Friday, 18 May 2018 17:34 (five years ago) link

"City Looks Pretty," "Crippling Self-Doubt and a General Lack of Confidence," "Sunday Roast," "Charity," especially "Charity."

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 18 May 2018 17:34 (five years ago) link

xp do u mean anything similar to depreston

niels, Friday, 18 May 2018 17:34 (five years ago) link

She begins wth a ballad, either a sign of confidence or lunacy.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 18 May 2018 17:34 (five years ago) link

xp not necessarily. that song just sat way above the rest of the songs on the debut imo, though i love that record.

flappy bird, Friday, 18 May 2018 17:44 (five years ago) link

yeah, I agree

slightly off topic but was thinking a bit about that cool (borrowed) couplet Men are scared that women will laugh at them/Women are scared that men will kill them
that's funny/sad because it's true but I think it's worth noting that men are also scared that men will kill them

niels, Friday, 18 May 2018 17:55 (five years ago) link

This record is classic

Incline/decline (Ross), Friday, 18 May 2018 18:35 (five years ago) link

Courtney Barnett, I like her

Exit stage left (Ross), Friday, 18 May 2018 20:40 (five years ago) link

walking on eggshells is a lot like over everything. Nothing on here quite like depreston but at least 3 slow burners

Exit stage left (Ross), Friday, 18 May 2018 21:13 (five years ago) link

she seems to have loosened up on this record - her guitar playing is noisier and wilder . this is a good thing . the first one may well be a ballad but it still pretty mean and menacing. I think this is her best album so far

clouds (peanutbuttereverysingleday), Saturday, 19 May 2018 05:06 (five years ago) link

The new single is kind of a tuneless snoozer.

louise ck (milo z), Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:32 (five years ago) link

This record rips. On what planet is the face melting Solo on help yourself drab? Record makes me wonder if she’s ok tho

Ross, Sunday, 20 May 2018 00:05 (five years ago) link

Loving the new album.

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Sunday, 20 May 2018 11:05 (five years ago) link

I like it tons but unsure if it will crack my top 10 - year has been solid

Music is confidence (Ross), Sunday, 20 May 2018 20:48 (five years ago) link

That’s Kim and Kelley deal on the song tell me how you really feel !!!

Ross, Thursday, 31 May 2018 14:05 (five years ago) link

I think this album is really good (and too short)! If I were to voice a criticism beyond that (and why not, it's ILM) -- "Sunday Roast" is a bit of a weak note to end on.

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Thursday, 31 May 2018 18:09 (five years ago) link

Yeah it’s super concise. Both this and the us girls feel like a track short to me

Ross, Thursday, 31 May 2018 18:11 (five years ago) link

It's as good as the original, don't understand the original kvetching.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 May 2018 18:18 (five years ago) link

Yeah I really liked the rolling stone review.
It definitely is more angry and all the better also some potent meditations on depression

Ross, Thursday, 31 May 2018 18:20 (five years ago) link

lovin this record

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 18:51 (five years ago) link

I dig the sound of her voice / way she sings and her gtr playing so much at this point, I've reached that "fan" level where the songs are almost beside the point (if that makes sense)... I just love hearing her stuff!

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 19:56 (five years ago) link

I can relate to that, it's a really nice record, Sunday Roast a standout

niels, Friday, 8 June 2018 09:12 (five years ago) link

The half-speed slowdown in the middle of "City Looks Pretty" is probably one of oldest tricks in the book, yet it "gets me" every time! Really one of her best songs evah.

(There's a Pavement song that does the same thing; can't think of it at the moment...)

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Monday, 11 June 2018 20:44 (five years ago) link

(ftr - I was thinking of "Billie," from Terror Twilight)

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Monday, 11 June 2018 20:56 (five years ago) link

"Silence Kit" more likely maybe?

I'm kind of on the fence with her. Old tricks in the indie book tend to abound, but she sometimes has that one extra hook to transcend it. "Charity" is a very good pop song regardless of such concerns.

'need a little time' seems pretty underwritten for her

one month passes...

I saw her play last night — holy gawd, it was amazing. She’s a rock star. I’ve seen a lot of shows; and this was one of “those shows”... She plays (without a pick!) fierce, confident rock & roll with perfect, in-the-pocket solos. Tight, excellent band. Even if I didn’t already know (& love) many of these songs, I would have been swept up. I felt privileged to be there, silly as that sounds.

She is also the best selector and performer of cover songs that I know. These are two she did last night:
