Burnley equalise!

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 22 April 2018 13:51 (five years ago) link

And so do West Ham smh

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 22 April 2018 13:56 (five years ago) link

not a bad day of results for the non-playing bottom-enders in the end! Burnley had a few good chances in the last few minutes and should have put one of them in the net, but a point for Stoke hopefully means they are doomed.

calzino, Sunday, 22 April 2018 14:25 (five years ago) link

my god West Ham are pathetic. if they go down I'm going to drink something good

thirst trap your hare (DJ Mencap), Sunday, 22 April 2018 14:26 (five years ago) link

I switched to the cup game just after the equaliser. They genuinely looked most likely to go on and win it

Number None, Sunday, 22 April 2018 14:27 (five years ago) link

Can't see anything other than the current bottom 3 going down

groovypanda, Monday, 23 April 2018 07:48 (five years ago) link

The football gods have been throwing us gifts and pissing all over Southampton/Stoke's chips, but I always overrate the fuck out of relegation rivals and believe the worst will happen, until it doesn't.

calzino, Monday, 23 April 2018 07:54 (five years ago) link

From your position, Albion can't catch you, Stoke have to win 2 out of 3 (and hope your GD takes a battering) and Saints have to win at least 2 out of 4 (they've only won once all year in the league).

Swansea meanwhile finish with home games against Saints and Stoke which should see them safe.

groovypanda, Monday, 23 April 2018 08:21 (five years ago) link

We haven't been shat on by the football gods in such a long time now that I have an irrational + superstitious belief we are owed a last game relegation. But rational mind agrees with you + says we're probably already safe.

calzino, Monday, 23 April 2018 09:09 (five years ago) link

Was 2001 the last time? (was the last time I paid close attention to a Huddersfield relegation struggle)

Google lobster hierarchies (Bananaman Begins), Monday, 23 April 2018 16:21 (five years ago) link

yeah, Palace were odds on to go down that day and Trevor Francis' Brum beat us 2-1, and various other managers fielded u-21 sides to abet this "conspiracy". Some chump in the bookies was crying that they backed the 6/1 relegation odds rather a treble with the 3 unlikely wins that were required to relegate us, that paid roughly 15/1. Some people were in delayed shock and hadn't realised we were relegated until they were half way up Leeds Rd. Good old pre-twitter/smartphone days when important scores were relayed to ppl at the ground by someone with a portable am radio to their ear.

calzino, Monday, 23 April 2018 16:38 (five years ago) link

until they were half way up Leeds Rd

Sheesh, adding insult to injury

fuck's sake Liverpool

the vomming of the snark (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 April 2018 13:27 (five years ago) link

Liverpool half asleep and someone putting treacle in Mo Salah's boots was not a good thing for football. But I still think Stoke are down.

calzino, Saturday, 28 April 2018 13:32 (five years ago) link

yeah they should be down easy before their last match, still

the vomming of the snark (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 April 2018 13:38 (five years ago) link

guiding two teams to relegation in one season is an achievement that needs to happen

the vomming of the snark (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 April 2018 14:14 (five years ago) link

we are undeservedly behind by h/t and eek, praise Bournemouth equaliser. Immense comic value from watching Rooney continually give the ball away and offer absolutely nothing to the Everton side. If there are any online petitions for him to make the England squad I'll be signing it!

calzino, Saturday, 28 April 2018 14:54 (five years ago) link

After today's results, you could really do with Arsenal reaching the final and Spurs & Liverpool to stop arsing about and finally kill off Chelsea's Top 4 challenge.

groovypanda, Saturday, 28 April 2018 18:35 (five years ago) link

I was thinking earlier when I saw we had 3 fullbacks on the very weak looking bench, that perhaps we could do with another year in the Prem and a couple more transfer windows of squad building, but it's all hanging in the balance now!

calzino, Saturday, 28 April 2018 18:56 (five years ago) link

West Ham have managed to score two own goals in the last ten minutes.

Calz if I were you I would not want to bank on getting a single point from your remaining three games, but Swansea still have to play Southampton and Stoke so any miraculous comeback from either of those teams is likely to be at their expense.

youd want to be some cheating cunt coward of avref not to book pogba for swinging off mkhitaryans neck there

his outside of boot pass the best moment in the game

jesus kane should have scored four or five tonight but was way off his game.

you never really her (darraghmac), Monday, 30 April 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

I was there, we didn't play well at all but fuck it, three points. If we beat West Brom then that Chelsea Liverpool game is effectively a win-win for us.

Matt DC, Monday, 30 April 2018 22:25 (five years ago) link

I really resent you not killing off Chelsea's top 4 chances before we play them yet, team's being nearly as profligate as the fucking cowboys building the new stadium at times, of course apart from we play you!

calzino, Monday, 30 April 2018 22:30 (five years ago) link

i found lamela v busily running, turning out the way of defenders and industriously persevering until he'd run a full circle and looking totally confused about what had just happened quite relatable

now's not the time to criticise dele when kane and dembele and dier have been so off the pace. dier's passing is incredibly bad for a midfielder who has started nearly every game for a top 4 club, but poch is clearly wedded to building the team around someone dependable in that position, a bovine david luiz. i guess the only upside to having both dembele and dier on against a team like watford is that eriksen gets to run all over the place niftily stroking it about, but with kane looking like me when I've been rudely awakened after only a cpl of hours sleep, son wishing he was playing in an actually incisive team and dele dutifully running back and forth in his little danger zone, there was never much on for him. things actually improved when sissoko came on. still, jan and davinson remain a joy (so much respect for jan's lack of patience and breaking into the box) and who wouldn't take a slightly creaky and boring win atm?

ogmor, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 07:56 (five years ago) link

all otm

ive come around to the belief that alli's playing shit but being killer effective two or three times a game is evidence of a higher plane of achievement that i dont see except in the brownian motion, the kind of implacable shit-to-win that late fergie, mou entiere and italians in aeternum have embraced as the true aesthetic of the game

you never really her (darraghmac), Tuesday, 1 May 2018 08:06 (five years ago) link

also....passing being awful last night aside, i thought dier had started to look good in dm the past few games again.

but rumours of willingness to sell wanyama....no

you never really her (darraghmac), Tuesday, 1 May 2018 08:08 (five years ago) link

in games like last night's dele seems the epitome of Pochian pragmatic hustling, making himself ready to capitalise on any rare bit of luck or skill or positional mistake. all quite attritional and drab ofc but yes at high levels where everyone's playing sensibly it's a v tempting way to play

i can only remember dier passing forward to trippier. the midfield does need something, and it might be better balanced with eriksen playing deeper

ogmor, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 08:22 (five years ago) link

that one sanchez long pass last night my god this kid

If we beat West Brom on Saturday, Chelsea are out of Top 4 race if they don't beat Liverpool.

Which would be great news for your lot as I imagine they would probably rest some players for a game three days later with the FA Cup final coming up in under two weeks.

Really hoping Huddersfield and Swansea both stay up.

groovypanda, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 09:35 (five years ago) link

The West Ham dream is still alive.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 10:12 (five years ago) link

Looking at it, Everton appear to be the pivotal team in the relegation fixtures, if they decide to put their feet up against West Ham and Southampton then everything is wide open.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 10:13 (five years ago) link

Also City's last three fixtures being Huddersfield, Brighton and Southampton. The whole thing is a clusterfuck.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 10:14 (five years ago) link

Everton's football might be boring their fans to death, and they might be disappointed the £200m spend just seems have made them defensively solid. But they are a tough nut to crack for goal shy, lower table dross like us, West Ham and Southampton.

calzino, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 10:32 (five years ago) link

saying that, they've conceded 54 and have -12 gd. Solid as a rock!

calzino, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 10:35 (five years ago) link

Looking at the table, barring some end of season calamity from Spurs, Chelsea's Top 4 aspirations are over.

Even if they win on Sunday, Liverpool's vastly superior GD means they'd only need to beat Brighton in the last game to guarantee finishing above Chelsea.

groovypanda, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 11:05 (five years ago) link

saying that, they've conceded 54

Only 6 more than Arsenal tho

groovypanda, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 11:06 (five years ago) link

Arsenal in fairness have dropped points to pretty much every relegation-threatened team except West Ham and Huddersfield.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 11:10 (five years ago) link
